Aaron was a pleasure to work with. When I first connected with him he was responsive and flexible to when I needed the work completed. Based on some things that took place mid-week Aaron said he would come Saturday to do the work. He should up and spend a couple hours fixing the drywall. Due to the mud not drying completely he asked if he could come back the next day. Again, he showed up on time and spend a half day mudding, painting, priming and painting my bathroom. He is kind, respectful and above all an extremely hard worker. He knows what he is doing and will do everything to make it perfect. In the end he wants you, his customer to be happy. It is hard to find people who will work hard and accommodate your schedule. I am having him back to my home next spring to re-paint our basement. I highly recommend Aaron for your next project as you will not be disappointed. I can’t thank Aaron enough for everything. I will certainly pass his name around to many friends and family.

We had a wonderful experience working with Don! He was dependable and professional throughout the entire process. His estimate was done in a timely manner and was very reasonable. He did quality work throughout our house, including tiling two bathrooms, replacing baseboards, and a variety of drywall work. He was very knowledgable and did a beautiful job. He went above and beyond and we would definitely call Don to come back in the future!

Barry was a joy to work with. He knows his craft well and very reasonable rates. He did a remodel of our bathroom from start to finish and it turned out beautifully ( installed new cabinets, tiled floor, installed toilet, faucets, plumbing and drywall). He is not only a good at his job but he is a nice guy. I have recommended him to family and friends and would hire him in the future.

Jaimie did an excellent job for us! He fit us in even though we asked last minute, and he couldn't have been friendlier or nicer. He installed a chandelier in our foyer with an 18 foot ceiling. He's efficient, responsive, fair with pricing and we'll definitely ask him to do future projects. Highly recommended!

Julio was great to work with. I was in need of a subcontractor for a big drywall job and he was there to size up the job the next day and got it started immediately. The job was completed way before I thought it would be and the work quality was great. Very enjoyable guy to work with.

We had Apex Construction install recessed lighting in our kitchen. This involved tearing out the ceiling, removing old fluorescent lights, and putting up new drywall. They dealt well with unexpected issues that came up, and made a good call on how much lighting would be needed. The results look good.

Tyler is one of the most awesome "Jack of all Trades" I have ever met. What started out as a small drywall project has turned into significant home improvement projects all over our home. From replacing toilets, doors and locks to a total makeover of our garage, Tyler is simply the best. We feel blessed to have found him. Thank you Thumbtack! Rick & Sally, Minnetonka

We hired Steve for our kitchen remodel. The work he did was outstanding. Superb job on scraping the popcorn ceiling into a nice flat smooth ceiling. He knocked down a supporting wall and installed new support beam and redid all the drywall, which people have commented on nice drywall work. Added 10 canned lighting in the kitchen and living room. Installed all our new appliances. The man does it all. Steve is also very dependable. He came and met with the delivery guys when we were out of town. A positive experience with Steve. Ume kulberg

Chris was fantastic! He responded to my initial call quickly, and was more professional than some of the well-known fence companies I contacted to bid on repair of the wood fence around the house I purchased - the fence was very warped and both gates were broken. His quote was quite reasonable, and he has done a lot of painting for my sister (she highly recommended him) so I chose Chris. I was really impressed with the outcome - he replaced all horizontal boards and several fence posts and redesigned/rebuilt the gates using the old wood so it matched, which was a great idea, plus it saved me money. And he cleaned up every day after he left and was very careful not to damage shrubs/plants along the fence. I'm already planning to hire him to paint my house, and to drywall an unfinished basement space. Very glad I found him!

Steve did a basement project for us from sheet rock to priming. He did a great job! Even as there was a couple things that needed minor rework (there typically is), he was out right away to address it. We are very happy with our project!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

      • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
      • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

      • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
      • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
      • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
