Hung, taped and mudded drywall in basement - A wall in my basement had mold behind the sheetrock and on the wood framing behind it. Aaron replaced parts of the frame that were damaged and replaced the deywall/taped and mudded seems. In addition, he hung (and taped/mudded) a piece of drywall on a ceiling space at the bottom of my basement stairs where it was previously unfinished. I put in a request for this work on thumbtack and Aaron responded within a few hours. He came out and did a bid right away and started the work the following morning. He was very professional, on time, and extremly pleasant to work with. He was also very good about checking in with me and making sure I was happy with his work. He did a great job for a good price and I would definitely recommmend him.

We had a wonderful experience working with Don! He was dependable and professional throughout the entire process. His estimate was done in a timely manner and was very reasonable. He did quality work throughout our house, including tiling two bathrooms, replacing baseboards, and a variety of drywall work. He was very knowledgable and did a beautiful job. He went above and beyond and we would definitely call Don to come back in the future!

Partial bathroom remodel to include drywall/texture work, painting, some minor carpentry, fan replacement, and vanity and cabinet removal/installation; Jamie did an excellent job and went above and beyond in problem areas were not even aware of. He was easy to work with and his work was very affordable. I would definitely hire again.

Julio was great to work with. I was in need of a subcontractor for a big drywall job and he was there to size up the job the next day and got it started immediately. The job was completed way before I thought it would be and the work quality was great. Very enjoyable guy to work with.

Corey is a straight shooter, easy to work with, comes up with good ideas and does excellent quality work. In addition to other work, he installed an in-wall dog door with precision requiring no touch-up work to the drywall, trim, nor siding. Excellent craftsmanship.

I am extremely satisfied with this contractor. Ken, the owner, convinced me to give them a shot after I was discouraged speaking with other contractors. He and Chris were willing to provide me a quote for exactly what I wanted for fair price. Other contractors tried to sell me on products that were either not to my taste or seemed inferior in quality. Homestead let me choose exactly what I wanted. Will did a great job from beginning to end. He answered all my questions and kept me in the loop step-by-step. The tile work on the floor and tub surround looks like a work of art. I would recommend Homestead to anyone who knows what they want and wants it done professionally at a fair price.

First Thumbtack project, ever; so I was not sure what to expect. Was a little skeptical of GSD Handyman after reading their last review. But, his price and previous project photos were too compelling to not take the risk. Plus, I am hiring a “handyman” not a “babysitter”. Best decision I have ever made! GSD Handyman does amazing work, hands down the best contractor I have ever used. The quality and craftsmanship of his work was truly amazing. He treated me like a person, instead of a job. He took the time to answer all my questions and concerns. Upon completion of this project, I asked him about a few other projects. Like a kid in candy store, cannot wait until he completes those projects. I would recommend him to anybody for any project. Gerry is an extremely skilled carpenter. He should be the next person you hire!

Three men came out to bid on and work on the job on day one, the older guy was extremely rude and unprofessional (yelling and swearing at me), but the two younger guys were great, nice and easy to work with. The initial consult was easy and the final product is exactly what was agreed to, the middle part was not the best client experience. All in all I would hire CSC for another drywall job as long as the older guy is not involved. They were very budget friendly.

We had a ugly unfinished basement with a furnace in the middle of the room. After speaking with multiple contractors we selected Dpenn construction. David was able to creat a floor plan to get that out of the way, now we have a beautiful basement (bedroom, washroom, and bathroom with a walk-in shower). David was easy to work with, honest with pricing and scope of work, and we feel like we got a great value out of the work that was done. Would highly recommend.

I hired John and his crew to fix the damaged ceilings in a house we just purchased. The kitchen ceiling had been poorly covered in drywall, and the living room and dining room had old popcorn that had been painted and was falling off. John suggested that he should remove the popcorn, patch the cracks, and finish the plaster using a hand troweled finish. When they started scraping off the old popcorn they realized that the cracks and damage to the ceiling underneath was much more extensive than they thought so rather than just patching the cracks they actually applied to the repair mesh to the entire ceiling including the kitchen. We have a whole new ceiling, and there was no changes to the quoted price. I'm so glad we went with them! Our ceilings look beautiful! (Note:they are still damp in these pictures but dried to a single shade of white.)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
