If you are looking for help decorating your house look no further. Stacy is your gal. I refer to her to my friends as the Joanna Gains of MSP for rustic chic (although she can do any aesthetic you are dreaming of)! I hired her to help me furnish and decorate my new construction home. She was always very attentive and had a wonderful game plan to help me tackle such a huge task. She came over and measured my home and took pictures. She then gave me a 3D rendering of my home decorated! It was STUNNING. We then went on several shopping trips to buy the large pieces together. Later on we went on trips to find the perfect accessories at places an interior designer would only know about! Stacy was a great listener and was flexible if any pieces didnt speak to me. She was happy to point out other options that would look just as nice. Finally, Stacy got some amazing designer discounts at the large box stores. On the shopping front Stacy is happy to do as little or as much as you need! She can go with you or tell you what to find, whatever your preference. She is also a master stager and thriftstore expert too! Stacy not only does typical furniture placement, shopping, and decorating...she is also an architect who can make a ton of the creative projects she proposes in your home for you. You don't have to hire yet another person. Wonder woman I tell you!!! Stacy made us a custom mud room bench built in HERSELF. She used reclaimed wood from all over the state and from barns! She also made us a custom chalkboard wall. Stacy's daughter took the pictures for our collage wall that will line our steps, they are the things of dreams! Stacy also picked out a wonderful reclaimed wood wall paper for above the fireplace that is unlike anything I have ever seen. To sum up it Stacy is a joy to work with, she is a friend at this point. She can literally do it all. She is flexible on all counts and can help you as little or as much as you like at a very fair price point. If you haven't already, just hire stay. You won't regret it. -Tory

Early in 2014, I was in the market for architectural services. I had very limited capital, so price was a very important consideration. Other considerations were that the firm be a small one that would give me personal attention. He has been extremely diligent and very transparent about costs as they were incurred. He has been extremely detail-conscious, educating himself about the odd codes involved in brewery design, as well as interacting regularly on my behalf with the City of St. Paul. This has saved me a ton of time and headaches. Dennis delivered needed drawings and modifications with short deadlines, several times. I will use Dennis again without hesitation, when we (hopefully) expand in a couple of years. Further, I would recommend him to anyone looking for an architect. — Kathleen C., Owner, Sidhe Brewing Co., St. Paul, MN

We needed new architectural site and floor plans for our daycare center. We hired Mr. Mackey and he was wonderful. I met with Mackey and he was on time and always professional. He went over the old plans and drawings and listened to everything I had to say about what I wanted and how I wanted the layout to be. Mr. Mackey drafted up plans that were perfect and I would highly recommend him to others.

At Oslund and Associates, the idea of shaping a landscape entails not only providing a place for social, physical, and intellectual interaction but also about sculpting open space into an artful form that acts as a breath within its given context. We feel that through design, there exists the possibility of discovery -- a discovery that comes from gracefully combining an attuned observation of contextual considerations, cultural understandings and economic realities within a deliberate programmatic focus. This is the basis for all creative expression and the cornerstone of our design philosophy. Because our work and process tends toward nontraditional forms, it could be said that the creative expression present in places we create resonates more strongly with art than with the traditional ideologies of landscape architecture. For us, there has never been a distinction. We consciously practice landscape architecture as an art form. The creation of simple, artistic and profoundly beautiful spaces is a very complex process. It is more than graphic patterns; rather, it's about creating simplicity through spatial means. Our experience allows us to achieve a detailed understanding of the complexities of making things simple. This multifaceted process entails making exterior rooms and defining place, engaging the idea of movement, of compression and release, proportion and scale, light and horizon. It's about the pure physicality of shaping the land to create engaging space. We are inspired by the possibilities and are motivated by the challenge of transforming indifferent space into simple places that will shape our collective memories and emotions. Each project offers us a new opportunity to define "place." Our intent is to affect each place in expressing the values and impressions of what it inherently possesses and encouraging what it can become in the future. We are poised to dedicate our energy, imagination, and attention to your design opportunity.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
