About
I love teaching people how to play the piano! I was lucky enough to have had some great teachers that had incredible influence on my life through their caring, commitment and great musicianship. They were part of a lineage of piano teachers that reaches back to Beethoven! Being part of a great tradition is one thing, but making it come alive for kids today is another. Music that appeals, fresh approaches, i-pad apps, all kinds of styles combined with a sense of humor and love of kids keeps my students motivated and lessons lively. I emphasize the development of a solid technique, musical literacy, and joy in music making. So often, students get frustrated because they don't have the technique to produce the results that they can imagine.Like anything else, practice is important, but WHAT you practice, and exactly HOW you practice it, makes the difference between pain and frustration or comfort and enjoyment. I strive to provide clarity on exactly what to do and how to do it! I love seeing the smiling faces of my students as they come through the door for there lesson, eager to show me what they have accomplished, and to have fun learning more. In the longer term, nothing beats hearing students perform beautifully in a recital or just in the lesson. The entire process is incredibly rewarding, as these skills, and the self-discipline it takes to learn them are my gift to them for life.

Imogen has calm energy as a teacher. She's engaging so that my daughter (she's six) listens and understands what's expected. Imogen's creative about ways to motivate my daughter at lessons and at home to make practice fun. She looks at where my daughter is and gives her enough to challenge her but not to make her frustrated, so my daughter feels good about what she's learning. Imogen's also an amazing pianist.

Imogen taught my daughter through advanced repertoire and now I am an adult student in my 4th year of lessons with Imogen. She is an incredible teacher who amazes me with her ability to take a student from playing notes to performing with great musicality! She is patient and respectful of different learning styles and able to motivate students with diverse backgrounds, goals and personalities. Of course, Imogen is an accomplished musician herself and it is always a delight to hear her in concert.

FAQs

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

It really makes a difference who your teacher is and what their qualifications are. This is a profession that anyone can claim to have (there isn't any licensing or training required to claim that you can teach, or to join the Music Teachers Association). You need a teacher who can really get you started with the right physical approach to the piano. Like other precision athletic activities (think golf or tennis for example) it is much easier to get started with good form and technique, than it is to fix it later. Bad habits are very easy to get into and can plague one's playing forever, or simply cause students to quit, because they aren't getting the results they want, it is tedious to learn new music, the music they really want to play is beyond their capabilities. I have the qualifications and knowledge to get students started right.
