Introduction: Sound Art Lessons specializes in teaching preteens and young adults piano, guitar, songwriting, and recording. Students don't just learn to play, but develop lifelong skills in goal-setting, patience, and searching for meaning. Owner Ward Francis--BM in music composition, theory, and piano performance from Appalachian State University--has taught piano and music theory privately and with the University of Kentucky and Washington University in St. Louis for 9 years. His teachings focus on fundamentals, how to practice, and how to listen to music--to play with others, to be able to play what you hear, and how to listen for understanding. Former students include graduate students at universities such as Florida State University, and vocalists with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

I would highly recommend sound art for guitar lessons. I took lessons from there for roughly a month and a half, and in that time I learned so much. I’ve been playing guitar self-taught for well over a decade, but I never knew the rules of the road so to speak. Ward took the time to explain everything to me even when I did not understand something he would put it in such a way that I could comprehend it. He’s very patient very knowledgeable and I would highly recommend Ward to anybody just starting out in Music, or even for the advanced player. Ward is extremely supportive, understanding and listens.

My kids have been taking guitar lessons with Ward for a little over a year now, and I cannot begin to say enough good things about our experience. He is extremely patient— just absolutely wonderful with my kids— and truly has a gift for teaching music. He encourages them both and keeps them interested in building onto what they’ve learned from one week to the next. My children really look forward to their time with Ward, and continue to amaze me as they improve their guitar skills. He has then playing so well we can easily identify songs- this from two kids who had never picked up a guitar before Christmas 2021. I cannot recommend Ward highly enough!

Ward is easily the smartest musician I know, and that’s a statement I don’t give recklessly, as someone surrounded by them. To many of us musicians, there exists a false dichotomy between learning to envision music theoretically and being able to compose it in real time, through what many call “feeling”, a word in music lessons that frustrates any student with its lack of clarity and path to application. Through a marriage of his rigorous education and a cunning creativity, he can understand music inductive and deductively, with both schools of thought, allowing anyone at any level to access a creative musical environment at any skill level, and create music that makes sense to both paradigms; allowing his students the gift of making music they love, and also being able to understand what specifically they love about it, something that many musicians struggle with well into college. I’m a music teacher, but I learn something from Ward every time we speak. Having him as your teacher is the smart choice.

“I’ve learned a lot about guitar, I can tell it’s because Ward is so knowledgeable and I wouldn’t have got this far in my learning without him”. As the parent of the student that said this, I’ll add that I second what my daughter has to say about Ward, and further that he’s enthusiastic - some of what he’s teaching is probably pretty basic given his experience and knowledge, but he’s always excited when his student is making progress - the hallmark of a great teacher!
