Q. How did you get started doing this type of work?
A. I first learned to paint as a 19 year old kid working with a small painting company in Sioux City, Iowa, where I grew up. A year or so later I launched out on my own, specializing in painting the exterior of homes. But it wasn't until I was in my forties that I came to love and really appreciate the painting and decorating business---having mastered not just great painting skills and passing them along to those working for me, but also mastering customer service after having been in the corporate world for many years, where the importance of good customer service was ingrained into me.
Q. What types of customers have you worked with?
A. Most of our work involves residential interior walls, trim and ceilings and painting the exterior of homes---we probably painted the outside of over 100 homes just this past year. We also clean and restain a lot of fences and decks and do a few designer Faux Finishes on ceilings, walls, vanities and sometimes furniture.
Q. Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A. We recently were hired by a Thumbtack customer to paint a good part of the inside of her home. She was concerned about the quality of paint and finish, having had problems with the cheap contractor grade of paint that was on her walls when she purchased the home. When we were through she couldn't tell us enough how happy she was with the results, and left this review here on Thumbtack.
"Mark is very professional and prompt. Hands on. They painted the majority of interior of my home. I had builders flat paint & it was obviously not the best paint,so after 3 years we needed it done. Mark gave us good ideas on paint choices. Quality of the work and his employees was exceptional. Price was extremely competitive for 2 coats of good Sherwin Williams paint. Was finished in 2 days. Definitely will use him again for the exterior. Thank you for a great job, Mark & company." - Marybeth A.
Q. What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
A. Painting companies and local painters come and go--its one of the highest turnover trades out there. And the trade tends to attract a lot of drug addicts and alcoholics. So its important to look for a reputable and highly skilled painting company which employs trustworthy and clean painters, has a track record of happy customers, and can provide you with references (be sure to call some of them). At Calhoun Painting Company we screen and employ only professional and trustworthy painters. In fact we receive compliments all the time about how friendly and professional our painters are. We also will provide you with two-page list of references with no less than 20 customers to call, and a copy of ten reviews from online. Providing these important things to you can save you from a contractor nightmare, and ensure a great contractor experience. That's our goal.
Q. What questions should customers think through before talking to
professionals about their project?
A. That interior and exterior house painting is an art with many tricks to the trade that only come with experience. Its our privilege and pleasure to use that experience for the benefit of our customers. Second, that we're going to be there after the job's done if there is a problem. And third, that we plan on being around for long time, whereas many painting companies fall by the wayside after just a few months or years, and therefore unable to back up their work and guarantees.
