Introduction: I got my first construction job in 1987 building a custom log home. I knew at that point building homes was the career for me. During the next 10 years I was exposed to different kinds of home construction, traditional stick frames, log homes, timber frame with sip panel construction and some commercial.
1995 my brother joined me in trim business, over the next 2 years we where hired to trim homes in different parts of Colorado. We had the opportunity to trim out some of the nicest homes in the state. These where trim jobs where everything was done to perfection, if it took all day to trim one window that is what it took. This was the foundation of our company everything needs to be done to the highest quality and never cut any corners.
In 1997 my family formed DSL development (Dean, Shawn & Lee). At this point my father had moved back to Colorado. He had settled back into real estate in Winter Park Co. The construction company was run by my younger brother and myself. Not long after starting the company my youngest brother (DJ who now is a commercial project manager in AZ) came to work for us.
In the beginning we started out with spec homes and remolding. It didn’t take long for DSL to become one of the go to builders in the area. Our main focus was on log and timber frames. After a few years we bought a saw mill and would use trees from our clients property for their homes. From accent pieces to log frame hybrid homes. It was very cool for the property owners to say that so much of their house came form their land.
By 2005 we had become the third largest builder in Grand County. We tried to control most of the build process. This aloud me to make sure everything was right the first time, it also saved clients money as I didn’t have to sub out excavating, concrete and a few other area’s.
DSL had a strong presence in the Pole Creek Valley subdivision. This community was owned by Scott Shirley who was from South Carolina. Scott and my father became good friends. Scott had asked my dad to come to North Carolina and help him launch Grand Highlands at Bear Wallow Mountain. After a number of months Scott wanted all of us to move here. He wanted my dad to run the community and DSL to be one of the three builders to build there. DSL built the main club house (10,000 sq ft and over 3 million in cost) we where also building spec homes in the Highland-Cashiers area. My brother left the company in 2007 to move to Vermont.
We had encountered a big problem with the mountain in the early years. We had no water and needed to bring water up to the top of the mountain from Hendersonville. This put a slow down on the development and really stopped all lot sales until we where well under way with the water line.
By the end of 2012 I had finished 2 more spec homes there and all the buildings for the water lines.
For the next few years while the recession was still going on, I focused on real estate.
My true love has always been in construction and in 2017 I had the chance to get back in and I jumped at the opportunity.
