Tony was honest and fair - Although my AC couldn't be repaired, he walked me through everything he replaced in an effort to fix it. I would hire him again for HVAC repairs.

I was skeptical at first and fielded a few repairmen but I was glad I went with Rapid Repair Experts. They were able to get some parts from the vendor of my HVAC for free and thought of creative ways to save me money which I appreciate. After comparing them to my home warranty I ended up cancelling my home warranty and using their 24/7 on call services. For the same price I was paying my warranty company Rapid Repair would discount all services, warranty their services and guarantee to come out (at no additional cost) within 24 hours. Versus my home warranty (AHS) who would have taken 3 or 4 days for an assessment another 3 or 4 days to fix, charge me for the visit, contract out the work to whoever would do it and attempt to patch up than replace a clearly broken item.

So grateful!!! Precision washing is excellent! I am somewhat clueless about a lot of home maintenance. . .(which is why I am on Thumbtack a lot)! I heard from Phil Morrell of Precision immediately after I submitted my request. From the estimate to the final touches, Phil did an above excellent job. I give the highest recommendation! Keep it going, Precision!

Matt was able to provide same-day HVAC system repair when my A/C stopped working in 100-degree weather. He took the time to explain the issue and the repair plan. My system was up and running in 2 hours. I will use his services again if I ever need him in the future.

Although I ended up not needing them, I'm giving them 5 stars anyway! I mentioned in my message that I'd only been in the house for five months, and Wayne suggested I check my home warranty first to see if my ailing HVAC was covered. It was, indeed, and so he saved me some $$. I really really appreciated his honesty, and if I need HVAC repair in the future, I will call them first!

Brett was awesome. Came out same day to fix an issue with a supply duct and floor register. He knocked that out. Then I casually I asked him to look my the 3rd hvac system which only services my bonus room and previously stopped working. I’ve had two other companies quote this repair and they both said it needed to be replaced. Brett spent and hour on it and got it back up and running perfectly. Labor and parts came to ~250$ (on this repair) vs replacement quotes of $6k+. Brett is a great guy running an honest and straight forward heating and air business. Highly recommend.

Ray Canady was very professional and communicative throughout the process of installing my new HVAC unit. He took his time to explain and educate about HVAC concepts, so I was better informed when making decisions. Ray also made sure things were done right, and he did all this for a tremendous value. I am extremely happy with his work and highly recommend him to anyone needing HVAC services.

Recently I have had the misfortune of having to deal with lots of contractors and on almost all the jobs they are late or some don't even show. I was so pleasantly surprised when Najim showed up 3 minutes before he promised and got to work quickly and communicated clearly what he was going to do. I am very happy with the service I received for my AC not working properly. I would highly recommend for prompt and professional service.

This company responded to my hvac leaking through my ceiling on a Sunday morning. From the time I went online searching for services to having someone at my door was about an hour. It took about 5 minutes and I was told what the problem was and my options to fix it. I literally mean 5 minutes. Highly recommend for anyone one looking for a quick reliable service.

I needed help with ensuring that the interior and exterior appearance of my father's house was at its best for an estate sale. I initally hired Dr Detail to clean the windows (inside and out), pressure wash the house and deck, and clean the gutters. Ty kept me updated on the progress of the work and made sure that the work was done to the highest standards. Ty went above and beyond to fit in some additional work (deck repair, landscaping, replacing rotten fascia boards) in his already packed schedule. He also took some broken windows to be repaired. It was a pleasure doing business with Dr Detail. I will hire Dr Detail every time that I have home improvement/maintenance projects!

We were moving into a house knowing there was an existing hot water pressure problem to be fixed and a speculative quote from Lloyd. Lloyd quickly found a nickel in the incoming line to the water heater and saved us money in the process. In the future, we will definitely be calling Lloyd first and referring him to everyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.
