Too many people think it's okay if a resume is boring. I'm a copywriter and know how important it is to GRAB attention with the first line -- and keep it all the way through. I got into resume writing because mine was always good -- thanks to my parents -- and friends would comment on it. Then, after some corporate experience, I returned to school and got a Masters in the HR discipline of Organizational Psychology. It's the study of how to maximize an organization's effectiveness, which is defined as "productivity times profitability." Since hiring managers are looking for employees that will "increase the value" of their organization, I knew what questions to ask my clients to find out what they did. Too many resumes are a laundry list of the tasks -- and don't include the accomplishments. Are there other resume pros who are HR-savvy? Sure -- but can they write as well as I can? Probably not. Then there are the ones who are good writers. Do they know as much about how an employee can improve the value of an organization? Probably not. Finally, while it's the least important aspect, in theory, how well a resume is formatted is the FIRST THING a reader will see. My formatting has evolved over the years to be as clear, simple, and easy to read as can be. I have a zero-tolerance policy for typos. Beyond that, I care about clients being able to use the resume in a strategic job search. I find out if they know what they're doing in that regard and give all clients a little advice to launch their search. If they need more, I also offer that service. And having great after-interview correspondence help clients seal the deal is an additional bonus. Paraphrasing the Mary Poppins line, "Being hilarious also helps the resume medicine go down!"
