My first student was my severely dyslexic sister who was in 8th grade reading at 1st grade level. For years teachers told me she needed to read more and she was eventually catch up. Nothing worked until I found the Orton-Gillingham method. Not only is she able to read now but she is addicted to a series of novels! I am trained and certified in the Barton System which one of the most comprehensive Orton-Gillingham based programs. The Orton-Gillingham method is the golden standard in teaching reading to children and adults with dyslexia. I have taken Lindamood-Bell's Lips training workshop on phonemic awareness for my most severely dyslexic students. I have also taken Susan Barton's 6-day graduate level Screening for Dyslexia seminar. In addition to my O.G.-based training, I have taken countless Linguistics and Structured Word Inquiry courses to expose my students to a scientific approach to orthography. Every word has a story and meaningful reasons for the way it is spelled, even so-called "sight words!" Using SWI, students use critical thinking, expand their vocabulary, and improve reading comprehension. As a Montessori teacher with 25+ years' experience teaching reading and writing to children 4-7 years old, including my own six children, I am passionate about showing adults how they CAN teach children to read.
