its was a pleasant experience working with paul on my furnace installation. he was willing to meet on a quick notice, communicated well, met me onsite, called me after hours to assist, and showed up on time on a saturday morning. The job went smoothly and he left the jobsite cleaner than it was prior to project. pricing was totally fair, he handled my parts warranty registration and even called me on sunday to make sure everything was running smoothly and made me aware of a filter that needs to be changed soon on my AC when most companies would have by passed it because they were not being paid for that service, paul went the extra mile! i own my own business with a few rental props. so im always looking great contractors for plumbing, electricians, mechanics etc., but especially good HVAC representaion and i strongly recommend paul if your expect high quality workmanship alongside of fair pricing..excellent pick and a great people person...give him a call, tell him Tim sent ya:)!!!

On arrival preformed 2 system AC maintenance. Disassemble Bose condenser unit to properly clean condenser coils. Found 1st 30/5 dual capacitor reading weak and replaced. Found 1st blower 7.5 capacitor reading weak and replace.d Found 2nd floor blower 5uf capacitor reading weak and replaced. On 2nd floor system add 2lb and 9oz of R22 refrigerant. Shop vac drain line out. Both units are cooling great now. Arrived promptly, Worked thoroughly and with great attention to details. Took the time to explain to me what he was doing and why. Previous owners did not service the A/C units since they were installed 9+ years ago. Great job! Will hire them to service my furnace in mid-October. Highly recommended.

I needed someone to install insulation in my crawl space asap because my house went on the market and we had a buyer the next day. They did a great job, came out the next day (Friday) to give me a quote and did the job over the weekend. I could not be happier! I will hire them again for all my other projects.

Joey came out right away to take a look at it, and resolved the problem quickly and efficiently. Not only was he prompt, friendly, and quick working, he was also super affordable and did repairs without breaking the bank! I would recommended him to anyone without hesitation! If you need HVAC work done, Joey is the way to go!

I called JT about a clunking sound my furnace made when it first comes on. He quoted me a more than fair price over the phone, spent an hour replacing a part and charged me exactly what he quoted. Being single, I've been taken advanced of by all kinds of repairmen, but not JT. A job well done and very reasonable! I will be calling him again!

Wow! My renters called and told me that the air was not working. I called Steve Moore Heating and Air and he turned around in rush hour traffic on 485 to get them back up and cool. Then he went back the next day to check on it. Top notch service. They are now my go to company for heating and air.

Rapp's HVAC and plumbing installed 2 new furnaces, 2 HVACs, new plumbing and a tank less water system. You judge a successful business by your last happy customer. Well I'd say your business is successful because of the employees you put on the front line. Aaron Knight is extremely professional, honest, genuine and thorough. He demonstrates a work ethic above others and I've shown my appreciation by forwarding him at least 4 referrals already since our completed job which have turned into signed contracts. I can't say enough how appreciative we are of Rapp's employees and especially Aaron Knight. Thank you and I look forward to working and giving you referrals for years to come.

I'm very pleased with the service! They installed a new heat pump at a home I just purchased. Their quote came in lower than all others. They showed up when they said they would, and did what they said they would do. A couple weeks later, I had a problem. I called them, they showed up when they said they would (three hours later). They found a problem causing the heat strip to come on with the A/C. It was promptly fixed and my unit has been operating well. They stand behind their work and are professional. A family owned and operated business. I really like them and thank them for their all of their great service.

Better pricing than anyone! Others wanted me to buy a lesser unit, but A.R.E. installed a Trane for a better price than the lesser brands.

I had several estimates to replace my system. Once I went to PriceFixer.com I was able to purchase a more efficient system for the same price others wanted to charge be for the minimal efficiency. They local installers (Reliable Air) were very professional and knowledgeable. I strongly recommend these guys.

Highly recommend AirSource Heating & Air! Jeff came out the same day I called and explained in detail what my problem was. He went over my options in regards to fixing the problem and gave me the different options/costs/quality of a new unit. Never made me feel pressured to make a decision right away. I called a couple days later to schedule a new installation and it was taken care right away. His crew did an excellent job and I will definitely use them again! Thanks Jeff & Air Source Heating & Air!

Mr. Massey replaced my air conditioning unit a couple years ago and continues to service it annually. He also helped me with a challenging task by replacing a garbage disposal that had been improperly installed. He has always done quality work while being friendly and reliable throughout the process.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
