If you are looking for an honest, dependable and reasonable contractor look no further. I interviewed several contractors to remove ceramic tile and laminate and install hardwood flooring throughout. He was the most reasonably priced but more important to me, he was trustworthy and put my mind at ease during a stressful process (I had experienced water damage from a broken pipe under our home and was dealing with insurance, a huge mess etc). He communicated throughout the entire process and I could rely on him for expert advice. He knows what he is doing, does it well and went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and our home was in beautiful condition after the flooring was complete. When I look to remodel other areas of our home Noel will be our guy!

Jose corrected a problem a former contractor (who I will never again allow into my home) improperly performed. The bathroom pedestal lav was only attached to the sheet rock. One small bump was all it took to loosen it. Jose completed the correction with professional results and was very accomodating and friendly. I intend to request his help in the future for never-ending project lists. I highly recommend Jose and suggest you give him serious consideration.

I hired M&M Grounds Maintenance to aerate, seed, and fertilize my yard. I am new to North Carolina, purchased a new home, but am unfamiliar with the needs of maintaining a grass yard here in the South. M&M replied to my initial inquiry within minutes with an initial estimate. M&M was very clear that the initial response was an estimate only and that he would need to see the property before providing a firm quote. The quotes I received for the services ranged from a low or $125 to a high of $225. After several rounds of email with M&M and the other contractors, I was satisfied that each contractor was quoting to the same set of requirements and revised estimates were received. M&M was the only contractor who would provide a firm quote only after inspecting the property. I liked that...no surprises after the fact. Mark and his wife, Shelley arrived at my home on schedule the following Saturday. They sent me a text message saying when they were on the way and the estimated time of arrival. After reviewing the size of my yard and the condition of the grass, Mark provided a firm quotation, introduced me to Shelley, who does the customer service, billing, and scheduling. I agreed to Mark's firm quote. The next day, Sunday, I received a text from Shelley scheduling my service for the following Wednesday in the late afternoon. Mark and his son Daniel arrived around 5:00 PM, again right on schedule. They did a great job, explained to me what and is needed and why, and how often the service is needed. M&M's lawn service also includes application of a pre-emergent in the early spring and again 4 weeks later included in their price. None of the other contractors offered this service. M&M is a family owned and operated small business that understands that customer service is the key to success. They do a great job at a fair price, and are reliable and dependable. M&M won my business and I will be using them for all my lawn care needs.

I would highly recommend Chris for large or small jobs around your home. Chris and his worker answered all my questions for me. When they arrived Chris and his worker looked around and assessed the work I needed done and went to work in a matter of minutes. Both Chris and his worker were very personable and easy to talk to while working. They both took the time to explain to me what their suggestions would be and I was pleased with going with their suggestions rather than my own ideas about how I wanted things done and the project to turn out. I appreciated how Chris was able to accommodate my request on getting what I needed repaired as soon as possible. He took the time to come out and do the job on a Sunday when he could've been home relaxing with his family. I felt Chris rates were very reasonable compared to other estimates I have received. Chris worker finished the projects in a short period of time and I was very happy and my wife pleased with the outcome. My wife send you and your worker Chris a big Thank You for getting the job done in time for our daughter's babyshower and one less thing she doesn't have to be concerned about for this special occasion for our daughter. Thanks again Chris and the excellent work and professional job you and your co-worker did for me! I'll contact you after the babyshower to set-up a date to do the work we talked about on my deck. Excellent work! Wife was very pleased and happy when she came home...again I would highly recommend Chris and his workers for any projects you have around the house..Thnx. —Manny & Linda

A contractor who arrives as promised, gives a fair and reasonable estimate, then completes work quickly and efficiently is very rare. Nick Gillaspie is that contractor. At my house he repaired and stained a deck, changed out a ceiling fan, hung ceiling medallions, changed chandelier in foyer and hung tapestry and huge wall hanging and left all areas in pristine condition. I would not hesitate to recommend him for any project he wants to tackle.

Jose was the only contractor from Thumbtack that offered to come see the damage before providing a quote. That was a big deal because one of the other contractors gave unrealistic solutions & prices. Also, 2 other guys have accessed the damages and did not know how to repair the wood paneling. Jose, even went above and beyond to replace more than we originally spoke to and explained all the work done. I will definitely hire him again to repaid woodwork.

Ben was a pleasure to deal with from beginning to end! We had purchased a home and had the walls, ceiling, trim, doors and mantle painted in the entry way, kitchen, living rm, dining rm, hallway and main bath. His crew did an excellent job on patching the walls first, painting and clean up. The crew was professional and courteous and went above and beyond with a leak in the bathroom sink (That was not on the job list). Andy noticed the pipe under the sink was leaking and went out to his truck to get teflon tape to make the repair and advised us that that would help stop the leak but to replace the p trap. In this day and age it is hard to come by contractors that do the job they are hired for let alone go above and beyond…But that’s just what Ben’s crew did!! The house looks amazing and it was seamless, stress free and done on time! Ben communicates through the entire process and makes you feel like you are his only customer. We also had all the carpets cleaned and they look beautiful! I will definitely be hiring Ben again for other projects and have already recommended him to friends and relatives. Buying a home and doing renovations can be very stressful and Ben made it completely stress free. Hire Ben and his crew and you will not be disappointed!!

Jonathan and his crew did an outstanding job on a fairly complex wall removal and structural support project. Jonathan himself was very professional, responsive and easy to work with. The guys on his crew were knowledgeable, polite and hard working. Pricing was reasonable. The most impressive part was how quickly they got the work done. The job was quoted by other contractors to take at least 2 weeks and Salazar Express got it completely done and cleaned up in 3 days. I will definitely hire them in the future for other remodel jobs on my rental houses.

Received various bids and selected Action Plumbing due to price and their availability to do the water heater replacement asap They also had knowledge of what was required to get my installation up to current codes and discussed what was needed and their bid included everything. The big box stores all needed days just to provide a bid. Action provided their bid within minutes, then arrived on site, on time, to confirm a replacement was really required vs. just a simple fix. All work was completed within a few hours. They hauled the old water heater away and the garage was spotless when they left. No need to wait for a big box store contractor when Action did it the same day I called and with a competitive price too... perfect. Hope all my future contractor hires go as smooth as this one did. Thanks Thumtack for hooking me up with Action Plumbing! You saved me money and the hassles of dealing with 3rd party contractors and helps us avoid many days of a leaking water heater.

We are currently doing some work on our bathroom and needed to have him come out and install a new faucet on our bathtub. We needed him right away so that the contractor doing the floor and shower installation could proceed and move forward with tile work. He was able to work with us and get the job done very quickly so that the other work being completed would not have to stop. I appreciated the fact that he was able to get there so quickly and do the job as quickly as he did. We will definitely use your services again in the future.

Alexander said he would call us 2:30 in the afternoon.......still a no show.....Alexander you could have called if your were tied up. These contractors pick and chose what job they want to take on. I feel our job wasn't big enough. He should have said so, and we move on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
