Introduction: My work tends to blur the line between commercial and art. I work in digital as well as B&W film and sometimes the best results are the spontaneous ones; the ones the client had a preconceived idea but as we worked on the assignment, the results ended up better than the original concept. What I like about my job is no two assignments are the same. I love the variety of work from high end real estate interiors to annual reports to portraits of prominent people, to product still lifes to capturing a building at just the right moment of the day to B&W documentary projects.

Doug, When I got married many years ago, I was stuck trying to find a great photographer then I remembered the work you did for school sporting events, and thought, if he can capture the sense of speed, height and emption for them, he can certainly capture the thrill of a wedding!. Sure enough, you did a great job. When it came time for my daughter to get married, I could not trust anyone else with such a wonderful occasion. You did a great job with the wedding and the reception. The pictures capture not only the people, but the great joy of the event. I look forward to our next momentous event!

I recommend working with Doug Van De Zande for your next photography assignment. Doug brings years of experience to the table, shoot a variety of subject matter (his large format BW portraiture work of local construction workers was recently published)...he's easy to work with and has a great eye.

I have worked with Doug for 15 years. His work is brilliant. My favorite assignment was when he photographed Thich Nhat Hanh and Andrew Young on the same day in about fifteen minutes. The black and white portraits are sublime. He is so very talented that I don't know why he hasn't become world famous already.

It depends on the job. Each job is different. Sometimes a budget is given to me, sometimes it's by the hour. I work it out ahead with the client.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I keep up with trends and technology through magazines and my local camera store.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was in high school when I got a camera for my birthday and that was it. I read books, looked at magazines, and practiced.I got a job at a portrait studio right out of high school and worked there for 3 and a half years before going on to Brooks Institute of Photography to learn commercial work.
