I'm not sure how to describe this experience fully, but my husband was a professional woodworker to the extent that he was hired at the college level to teach fine woodworking and furniture design. Yet, he had a very rounded grass roots education in most aspects of house renovations. Two years ago, he had an accident that left him a quadriplegic. Because of this, we are downsizing quite a bit and needed someone to help us with some electrical and general handyman tasks so we can get our house up for sale... those things my husband did not get a chance to get to. I am so happy we found Sergio! He was able to complete half the things on our list in a short day for a very reasonable cost. The remainder we are waiting for parts, but I have full faith he will complete them easily and quickly. What floored me was that he found things that our builder should have done but never did completely. That's what I truly appreciate about Sergio. He has seen what the builders do to cut corners and knows how things should really be done. And the solutions he comes up with are extremely practical and affordable. You will not be sorry sorry if you hire him for a job... and have a realistic grasp on how much your problem will cost to fix.

My sister and I are real estate investors and residential property renovators. We are always on the lookout for quality contractors who perform good work at a competitive price. Upon meeting Marcel and his wife we immediately knew we wanted to work with them. Their other Thumbtack reviews were impressive and their level of professionalism was what we were looking for. Marcel and his team renovated a 3/1 ranch style home for us. Improvements included: complete kitchen and bathroom overhaul, painting, carpet, new window casing and installation, new siding, and other decorative cosmetic fixes throughout the home. The work he and his team performed on this property was impeccable. He keeps you informed throughout the process with daily calls and status updates. His initial quote was itemized and true to budget. There were plenty of times we checked in and he was working into the evenings and on the weekends. Not because he had slipped on the schedule but because he knew it was in everyone’s best interested to get the job done in a timely manner. He also makes sure that the work is to your level of satisfaction before he moves on to the next task. At the end of the project we were totally satisfied. We got a quality renovation at a reasonable price. The house was listed on the market and sold on the very same day!!! Marcel and his MHI Works team is a pleasure to work with. Not only does he and his team do great work but his customer service skills are outstanding. He communicates with you throughout the process, constantly gives you updates and makes you feel confident that you will achieve whatever your projects goals are. There is no doubt we will use MHI Works again. They are listed as a preferred contractor moving forward. Al D. Swanky Footprints Properties

Bottom line, Phil knows carpentry. We had a tough situation here at the Town of Morrisville where some contractor built soffits out of a cheap material that appeared to be drywall and it all started falling apart. Not only did Phil give me the best price to replace the soffits with vinyl but he did an excellent job and did it rather quickly. I would highly recommend this company. For me, Craftsman Unlimited Carpentry is on the top of my list for carpentry contractors. If you are in the Morrisville area, stop by and see the magic he did on our bathroom soffits at the Morrisville Community Park bathrooms at the end of the entrance road. For carpentry, Phil is the man!

We couldn't have asked for anyone better than Mike. He did excellent work on the backsplash we requested and then fixed the poor work that others had done including painting various areas, patching large holes in a bathroom wall, altering a door to fully close that had been put up quickly, and putting in a new light in the crawl space just to mention some. He is truly such a gentleman. We would whine about something that was in need of work and he would volunteer to get it done. The house is empty, so he came in throughout the early hours of the morning (2am -6am or earlier) and some late afternoons to make sure he had the job done with a great deal of quality and timeliness. I had updates at least once a day and pictures always accompanied them. I turned down the contractor my realtor recommended because I didn't appreciate his attitude, and took a chance on Thumbtack. I am so glad I did. I would definitely recommend him for any service he provides, and we _will_ use him again in our new house. I just wish we'd known him when we first moved in. I'm posting some of the photos he would send each day showing each stage he was in. Needless to say, call him first before you try someone else.

We had a great experience with Jordan from Carolina Building Pros! He’s bright, punctual, professional, tidy, respectful, knowledgeable, easy to communicate with, is great at what he does, and has a great eye for detail. As an interior designer myself who’s worked with many contractors in the past, a good eye for detail is hard to come by, and Jordan has got it! He renovated a few attic spaces into a fun playroom for our son, a storage space for media players, and a place to mount our TV. We are so happy with his work and would recommend/hire him again in a heartbeat!

David could NOT be more amazing! He was always on time and very responsive. Even my painters (that came in after) said that he did AMAZING work. They said that they normally do not see such great chair rail and wainscoting and were very impressed. His work was beautiful and done in a timely manner. Thanks so much David!

Working with John & Pat was awesome! They were knowledgable, efficient, and a pleasure to work with. Aside from the repairs and changes I needed, John suggested a few other preventative measures to ensure I don't run into problems in the future. I'm a big fan of contractors that not only save me money on my projects but also save me from needing future repairs.

Dave has done various jobs. He installed hardwood flooring throughout my entire home, including stairs. He did a wonderful job! Installed pull down attic stairs as well as wainscot in bathroom and hallways. All of his work was outstanding. Would highly recommend him. He is the most conscientious professional I have dealt with in a long time. AND, all of his work pleased my wife, which is a recommendation within itself!

I had some work done to the bathroom flooring and a few areas of drywall repaired. The cost of work was reasonable and everything was done in a timely manner. I am very happy with the results. Definitely would recommend using them over another renovation company.

We recently had Lucas' company, Built Strong Renovations, at our home replacing siding, some windows and wood rot repair on remaining windows. We were extremely please with Lucas, his attention to detail and customer skills made this a pleasant experience. His guys put in some very long days to ensure the work was done and the house was always protected from weather. Thank you Lucas. Karen and Rick

I have already requested estimates on other projects and have referred him to friends. He will be my "go to" contractor for all my repair work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
