Michelle painted all bedrooms and bathrooms for my children and i. Alot of work, and nobody could imagine this being done by just one person. AMAZING energy and focus and attention to detail. Her design background helped me "focus" to pick the colors and style I was looking for. I will recommend her to ANYONE I know that needs painting done. She is thourough, exceptionally clean, and very much the only person I have ever seen that can straight line edges WITHOUT TAPE!!! I am bringing her back in a few weeks to finish the rest of my house! Thank you Michelle!

Billy Park created a logo for our new horse training business. I was impressed by the amount of time he spent getting to know us. He sent us a questionnaire, and then came out to our business for a visit, so he could see and understand what exactly we do, meet us, and generally get a feel for the kind of audience we are trying to reach. He subsequently sent us five designs. We took elements from two of them, and Bill was able to create the logo we went with on only that second round of ideas! The amount of time he spent up front was definitely reflected in the speed and success of the conclusion of the project. Billy also came across as a very pleasant and easy to work with guy. Good price too. We are happy.

We have worked with Midnightson Designs developing our blog, website, and social media strategy. Carey's designs are eye-catching and he knows what works on the web. We are an architecture and project management firm and understand that we need to be web-smart and use social media as part of our marketing plan. We also know that we don't have the time or the necessary skills to do all this ourselves. Carey has help us develop a strategy and put it into action. He makes our team more effective.

We had purchased a new home and totally re-built the first floor into an "open concept". We hired PDS to come up with a color scheme, layout and furniture suggestions for this unique property. Dorothy brought a variety of graphic and design skills (not to mention impeccable taste) to bear in her recommendations and plans. She considered our tastes and expertly wove them into the final result. We could not have been more pleased and generously recommend her to any other potential clients. Thank you, Dee!!

Peter from Paragon Graphics did all the graphic art design for my entertainment agency for over 15 years... and he is the best! Very easy to work with, reasonably priced, flexible and highly creative. He also sometimes lets you know if an ad design, brochure or business card design you submit needs something you may have forgotten. Like having another employee on the team who has your back! You won't be sorry.

Dave responded within 24 hours of my initial request. He gave a specific and very reasonable quote. After talking with him on the phone, and checking out his other work, I was very excited to have him design my logo. He listened very carefully to what I wanted and came up with several great options. I chose one of these and he continued to develop it. He didn't get tired of me asking him for more revisions, and he not only came up with great ideas, but he also really included my ideas. I absolutely love the logo he created for me. I really enjoyed the process of working with him and would recommend him to anyone looking for design work! -Christine Kenneally, Easthampton, MA

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

      • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
      • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
      • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

What makes a good logo design?

A good logo is an easily identifiable, memorable image that represents your brand. A good logo design aligns with your business model and expresses your company’s core values. A good logo design is simple, appealing, and easy for customers and viewers to quickly process. Some of the key components of a great logo are type, color palette and design. The scale, font and arrangement of the text you select will all make a difference in the feel and representation of your brand. A graphic designer will help you home in on the colors that best represent your identity and help you keep the color palette simple. The design of your logo includes the shapes you select and the way the color and type are arranged together. Investing in the services of a professional to create your logo design is likely a smart investment for any size business. Nationally, the average price range for a logo designer ranges from $170 to $250.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
