Once every 10 or so rainstorms, water drips onto my dining room floor. Over 7-plus years, various contractors and handymen have tried to stop it, and failed. Wayne came by, made a nearly instant diagnosis, and promised he'd be back the next afternoon to repair it -- in less than an hour. He came back as promised, right on schedule, did his thing, and thoroughly tested it with my hose. Even cleaned out the gutters so the hose water wouldn't soak my deck. Now two rainstorms later, no leak. After 8 more storms with no leak, I'll come back to Thumbtack and give him FIVE stars!

Jorge and his team of 4 men did an amazing job painting my 4K sq.ft. house from top to bottom in under 6 days. They did a perfect job, were beyond reasonably priced, were super helpful with other little side projects (including fixing my banister without me even having to ask, fixing a minor leak in a sink, etc) They didn't just work quickly but they are absolutely meticulous about their work, and were very conscientious to make sure any tiny oversight was touched up. Jorge even came back about two weeks after to fix areas that other contractors damaged while working, and did so for free. You can tell he, his team, and his awesome wife Myra (who works alongside him planning and communicating) are completely trustworthy too, they have the code to my door and I don't feel the need to change it! Obviously if you are lucky enough to have Jorge and his team help you with a project you will be satisfied. I can't say enough about them and will definitely be calling them in the future.

Bob has always been a amazing contractor. i was a single mother with a old house and Bob guided me and did wonderful renovations for me. He always had great advice for me. Left the work site clean and picked up and when he was done the job was beautiful. He did everything from renovating my kitchen to replacing the falling down two story plaster wall in the stairwell with sheet rock.. Bob rocks!

Michelle was a pleasure to work with. She provided us with the plan for our new master bedroom suite. Unfortunately, all her contractors were not available in our Short time frame, so we had to choose another to complete The project in our tight window. Would use her again for design/project advice.

John is very accommodation and made everything look good under a budget while meeting and exceeding my expectations! The job wasn't easy, he had to repair mistakes made by previous contractors. New sub floors and flooring, trim, cabinets, drywall and repairs, plumbing of the toilet and sinks and vanities. It's a very old apt and nothing is square or even but he made it look fresh and new!

I am a tenant in Worcester in a triple decker. I live on ground floor and have fenced in yard with a dog who loves that sort of thing. Call me spoiled but I got used to that. In the recent high-wind weather, a large 20' section of fence blew over. I discovered the posts were never cemented. Much to my dismay, the landlords did not want to fix the fence. In addition to having a dog I now had to leash walk everywhere, the yard was open to theft where I have a fire pit, grill, patio furniture, etc. I also feared the fallen fence would continue to get damaged and become impossible to salvage at all. I posted on thumbtack and received several replies. Some estimates were so high, they blew my mind. Then there was Billy. Billy wasted no time. He came right out to my apartment. He was empathetic to the fact that I was paying out of pocket on a property that wasn't mine and had a couple ideas on how to keep costs down. He recommended I buy the material. I bought it same day and two days later my fence was dug, poured, and set. The best part is he beat the snow coming and was extremely conscientious of his work. The old fence sections had rotted and worn down to the point where they had to be cut to be re-seated. Billy left full size posts for when those sections need to be replaced. When they are, they will match the height of the posts. I have already recommended Billy to a colleague who renovates and flips houses as a side business. I, myself, work for a General Contractor in Worcester but concrete and fence work was too much for me to tackle myself. I've been around the industry and I know good people when I see them. Billy is a hidden gem. I'd love to keep him the best kept secret I know but I'd be doing him and his work a dissatisfaction. I would recommend him to anyone. Without hesitation.

Gerry and his brother Mike have done an excellent job at our home last week. We had to address water leaks and rusted waterlines in three toilets. Gerry communicated well about the project, estimation, parts and pricing. Gerry listened to everything I had to say about the plumbing issues in our home and gave me ideas and options to fix the issue with appropriate parts. He allowed me to buy the parts myself. On the day of the install, Gerry and his brother took extra care to do the project with best quality and spent time to make sure that there are no more water leaks in our pipes after the work. Mike installed two water hammers for the washing machine by doing some copper pipe work and tested well after the installation to ensure that the washer is working fine and there is no more sounds coming from the pipes. Mike also helped us to stabilize the washer by adjusting the leveling screws. They used necessary accessories to keep the workplace clean and after the project, left no trace of any residue. Upon my request, they wore booties to avoid walking with boots on our carpets. I greatly appreciate their professional work ethic and quality of work. I strongly recommend them for any plumbing work in your home based on what I saw. It is rare to find quality contractors. When you do find one support them. All the best and have a great day. -Satheesh Donthy, Chelmsford, MA 01824

RJ Development delivered impeccable service. I admit I was hesitant based on a negative review previously written, however the way Rich followed up with me, and answered all my questions really put me at ease. He took the time to come to our home to clarify what was needed. He kept to the pricing. This is a very nice contractor and very personable. I would recommend him without hesitation!

Mr. Godek is a friendly, personable gentleman while being extremely professional. I have contacted countless contractors over the past several months and was lucky to get a response, and then very few would respond after giving scope or inspecting project. That is until I found Thumbtack. Mr. Godek is one of three that initially responded and the contractor I hired of the two who ultimately quoted. I am out of State but Mr. Godek has kept my updated on progress and sent me before and after pictures as work progresses. The scope of the work based on his recommendations and documented with pictures has been expanded. I highly recommend Godek Home Improvement to anyone needing anything from vine/tree cleanup to minor construction. Mr. Godek has given light to a dark situation!

We had complete vinyl siding and trim done on our house in Hooksett in May 2014. Jim arrived promptly for the estimate which was thorough and the price was fair. All work was performed by Jim and his brother (no sub contractors). They did a great job. Also cleaned up the worksite after each day. The entire job took about 3 weeks. No issues with the work thus far. Very satisfied.

XCC did a perfect job installing my hardwood floors in two large rooms. There were lots of complications with rooms being out of square, un-level surface around the fireplace due to mortar, and border patterns with different wood, and insets. All of it came out perfectly and with very little wood waste (way less than other contractors would have done). Xavier and his crew also did a great job replacing my damaged sub-floors throughout the entire house - a task that no other contractors were willing to take on. Xavier and his crew always worked hard and are very pleasant to be around. They have wide knowledge and skill sets and are willing and able to do anything you might need. No lazy-bones or burn-outs in this crew!

My wife & I interviewed 14 general contractors for our complete home remodel project (3 new & expanded baths, new vaulted ceiling & tiled shower in master bath, new tray ceiling & barn door closet in master bed, new screened-in porch, new front porch & front door, new & expanded wall of colonial windows in living room, finished garage, siding repair). This is a big project & we wanted to make sure that we hired a GC that (1) is skilled, experienced & has a track record of high-quality work, (2) is trustworthy, ethical, communicates well, easy to work with, and, (3) charges a fair rate for his work. Ralph is a rare find and checks all of these boxes. You should always speak with as many contractors as possible in order to find the best match for your project, and, Ralph should absolutely be on that list. We are very impressed and very happy with Ralph, and, we HIGHLY recommend that you discuss your project with him before making a final decision. He's a hard-working, highly-skilled GC that does the right thing by his customers at a fair price.

B & N did a wonderful job. They striped our roof, replaced a couple of boards that were needed and had the roof done in a timely manner. He was on time and cleaned everything that had to do with the roof. Also, he was less money than two other contractors. So we did save some money.

With all of the horrible stories about contractors you hear these days, it's hard to give trust to someone with your home, but I don't have to think twice about trusting Mr Fillers, as he is the most honest contractor you could hope to meet. I hired Fillers Carpentry to remove and replace 2 double hung windows, a picture window, and a sliding patio door back in February, and could not be anymore proud of my replacements! Not only does he do top quality work, but he done it for a price I could afford! I happily recommend his services to all my friends and family!!

I hired Greg when another carpenter could not get to my project, replacing a small porch floor. After pulling up the floor boards Greg discovered extensive rot, and the whole porch had to be replaced, including the structural footings. Greg completed the job in a week, working on the weekend, to limit our inconvenience of having no access to our main entry door. He even attached a temporary mailbox for us. We found Greg to be prompt in all communications, and a skilled carpenter in all phases of the project.

Kevin was one of the best, if not the best, contractor that I have ever hired and I hired a lot of contractors in the past. He did an excellent job installing a beautiful deck for us. He was always on time and always communicated everything clearly throughout the whole project. His price was very reasonable and most importantly you CAN trust him unlike with other contractors.

A++ experience with an outfit new to Thumbtack. We asked Matt's company to assess our roofing and found we needed a replacement of about 70% (we confirmed we did, too, after seeing the sorry state of the old shingles). Matt & Co. were fantastic from the quoting process right thru to job completion -- which they did in nearly one day! Matt is a rare find in that he's truly understanding of bugetary concerns and not only amended our initial quote to better fit, but offered an even more forgiving solution to consider. You can easily tell he and his people know their stuff and our new roof looks great! We discovered later that they went above and beyond what we even expected. Additionally, we found them responsive and friendly, all job debris was throughly cleaned up, and even our request to remove shoes when coming inside was heeded without question or repeating. Matt also told us not to hesitate to let him know any issues with the work and he would come right out to address. When we asked about other projects besides masonry and roofing, the reply was "everything but landscaping". :) We have a 145yo home and plan to have them back for many more projects. If you hate shopping around for contractors as much as we do and look to extend your loyalty once you find a good match, Matt Nelson is a keeper -- thanks guys!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
