Charles was fantastic. He came on time, quickly got to work, efficiently addressed all the small jobs I needed taken care of, and was thoroughly professional throughout. I would have no reservations recommending Charles to anyone looking for a handyman -- I don't think you could do much better.

Mike was wonderful. He arrived on time, was very efficient and incredibly quick at putting in my window AC unit (I tried for 2 hours the day before!!) as well as putting in the brackets for my blackout curtains on my dormer Windows. My new place is a breezy 63F with privacy and I couldn't be happier 😎. I highly recommend him for anyone needing a very kind, respectful, swift handyman who doesn't cut corners or overcharge. I will definitely be contacting him again if I ever need any help with house-related things.

Danny is terrific! He did what we had asked, and will be doing a few other jobs as well. He knows what he is doing and can do ANYTHING to do with building and/or "handyman" tasks. I can't say enough about how knowledgeable he is. Fast, pleasant and willing to do (and CAN do) everything!

I highly recommend Sewell to anyone in need of a handyman. Sewell was very flexible in terms of his availability. I had posted to Thumbtack that I was in need of a professional to delicately uninstall my TV mount on a Sunday morning and Sewell was able to make it to my apartment in a matter of hours (I had been told by others that Sundays were not available). Sewell showed his experience when he was able to complete the job quickly without causing any damage whatsoever. The thing that impressed me the most about Sewell however was how kind and professional he was. I would EASILY hire Sewell again for any projects or jobs that I have in the future. Oh and the fact that he was very fair with pricing was a bonus as well! :)

Loved loved loved working with E! I hired him to paint the interior of a home I was about to move into. Painted every single room plus all the trim inside my home for an extremely reasonable price- he even offered to come back after we move in to touch up anything that may get dinged up during the moving in process. Completed the job a few days early as well. Open communication throughout the entire project. I will totally hire him again in the future for any other handyman jobs I have!

Paul went over and above and did even better than I had hoped. For example, when I asked him to paint my kitchen, I had no idea that he was going to paint the walls inside the back of the cabinets. Wow, looked brand new. He even took down ceiling lights when painting the ceiling. As for other repairs around the house, he did everything 200%. He worked on my home as it was his. If you need a handyman, hire him. You will have no regrets

The pulley system on my garage door snapped one day, and Bill was able to come out and fix it the same day I put in my request on Thumbtack. He was professional and personable, did a great job, clearly knows what he's doing, and I will absolutely hire him to help around here again. His hourly rate is the same as another handyman we've used, which leads me to believe it's pretty standard around here.

Michael Kiesling has completed various jobs for us from a condo rehab to smaller side projects. In my interactions with Michael I found him to be very professional, knowledgeable, dependable, honest, trustworthy and personable. He was able to provide accurate quotes at the onset of the project. Not only did he offer great value for the money but he also generated great quality results that are without reproach. He has met all of my requirements and addressed all my concerns without issue. I am highly recommending MIchael to anyone who needs a skilled handyman for their home improvement and maintenance projects.

Jeff was great to schedule a quick turnaround shed build. He was very responsive in prepping beforehand to understand what the job entailed and came when scheduled. He built an outdoor shed very quickly and independently. I would certainly hire him again for handyman work in the future.

He came out when he said he would. He was extremely hard worker, he gave me a fair price and his workmanship was A+. He put down flooring, did trim around my bathroom mirrors, and repaired title on my bathroom walls that was damage due to a leak in the walls. He did such a great job. He is my go to handyman.

Mr. Patrick Brown has a unique ability to inspire those around to find better ways to solve problems and reach joint solutions on and off work sites. He also knows how to take charge if and when the situation dictates. In addition, he has a great reciprocal learning capacity; in that he has no problem imparting his knowledge to those willing to learn, but also displays a positive attitude when others have something they can teach him. Possessing these qualities and more make having Mr. Patrick Brown and his team a great addition to any team.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
