David did an outstanding job cleaning up my landscape. He spent a lot of time pulling out the weeds which were really overgrown due to the abundance of rain. He also planted 2 small trees and some bushes. David then put down a thick layer of mulch very neatly around my entire property. At the last minute, I asked him to lay down some stone along my back fence which he agreed to do for a nominal fee. I am extremely pleased with the work he did. My landscape looks fantastic. I would use him again and would recommend him to anyone else.

I found the experience of working with Mr. Rodas to exceed all my expectations of what Thumbtack might be able to offer. He was the first gardener and landscape professional to respond to my request, and each time he offered respect, kindness, and good advice, and willing to listen in a professional yet individual and caring manner. He carried through on what he offered. His gardening colleague Jack was as kind, hard working, and professional as Guillermo is. Despite a personal glitch in scheduling, Mr. Rodas did not give up or lose interest. His was willing to adjust to the budget I stretched to be able to afford for the gardening needs; and provided I believe exceptional value for money well spent. Watching him execute the finishing touches on placing the chosen plants around the property was the moment of magical transformation. They even worked through the rain. They have been an answer to my prayers. I recommend him at the highest level and feel it is a privilege and joy to have had his caring heart, expertise and vision of beauty for the yard I care for. Faithfully, Rev. Dr Victoria

Had a great experience with Chris and his crew replacing my fence. He provided information and quoted several fence options for me. Got the pressure-treated shadowbox fence to replace my old beat-up fence. Removal and installation of fence done in about a week. Highly recommened, provided very good info about pricing, lead time and concerns. Enjoying the new fence!

Douglas did a makeover with the wilderness that was taking over our house. He was responsive, listened to what we wanted and was able to deliver it in an impressive amount of time. In just two days our outdoor space went from a weed infested crazy yard to a beautiful outdoor space where we can actually entertain. We were able to workout a design that could fit our budget while still adding charm. His wife also has a good eye and will make suggestions is you are not sure what you want to achieve as end result. His employees were very friendly and did a couple of things that they saw was needed regardless of it being quoted or not (taking down a decaying branch from our tree). They were responsive, fast and respectful. I would highly recommend them to anyone and would use them again.

Justin is very professional and takes pride in his work. He's very attentive to detail. He works really hard to get the job done. And on time. I had part of my yard reseeded. He and his crew were at my property on time and worked diligently. He's come back twice since the job was done to ensure that the grass is growing and he continues to monitor the progress. I highly recommend him. I will definitely use him again for my next project of installing pavers for my fire pit.

Mike and his crew were awesome! Our front yard had shrubs that we wanted shaped with a couple removed. We listened to Mike and had all but one removed, added some red stone and some smaller plants and the neighbors can't stop talking about how beautiful it looks! Thank you Mike! Your company will be our landscape company forever! M/M Scott

I can't recommend Dan enough. I recently moved to my first home in Brooklyn with outdoor space and wanted help getting a garden up and running on my patio. After coming by for a consultation, Dan came back with plants, soil, and tools and taught me how to plant and care for everything. He also set up an irrigation system for the new plants and helped me install outdoor lighting. The patio and garden look fantastic thanks to Dan's help. I will definitely work with him again!

Absolutely love the work that Nick and his crew did for us. The entire process was a great experience from the initial response on Thumbtack to the estimate and the completion of the project. The communication throughout was excellent. Our landscaping project was completed in a timely manor and the cleanup was perfect. There was no evidence that the crew was there other than the excellent result. Nick and his crew were very courteous and friendly. I would highly recommend Mulch Men Landscaping to anyone and I will definitely use them for future landscaping projects.

Although avid believers of “do-it-yourself” it was time for the experts to plan and install our outside backyard patio and front walkway. This review may be a little long winded, but we felt it was necessary to cover all the key particulars of our outdoor project to provide potential customers of Trevor Landscaping (TL) a concise perspective of all the fine services afforded by the organization. Prior to TL we surveyed three potential contractors for the project. Besides price, quality materials, experience, timing and clever design, an important aspect for both of us was contractor attitude. Attitude by Trevor and his staff played an important role in our final decision. Questions before the project started and those during the project were seriously acknowledged and appropriately responded to with constant positive feedback. This included Trevor, his office staff and in particular the incredible construction workers. Positive attitude and feedback were always conveyed. The layout of our property and our design objectives provided some extremely creative challenges. Extreme measures were taken by the construction staff to work within our confined construction areas assuring unnecessary damage to surrounding plants, trees, housing, driveway, water line and roof drainage. The staff worked around our pets’ accessibility to share the outside space while construction was underway. The design of the extended patio layout, pet area and walkway were artistically and cleverly incorporated into the surrounding landscape. Because of our hilly terrain, mobility and space for construction equipment was severely limited, but the staff made every effort to be respectful of areas that were not part of the central design. Their engineering skills for patio design were amazing. The accuracy of the interplay between the various sections of the design fit-in as perfect parts of a puzzle. Attention to detail was highly maintained. Cleanup and any required restoration of the property were managed perfectly. We have been using the area for several months now through the Fall and Winter (2017-18) and have not experienced any post construction concerns. This included three different rain water management issues that we had to address in the layout design. If any issue did arise during the construction process there was total communications between staff and management with always a definitive response. Getting back to our original comment about attitude, we would have to repeat once again how we were impressed with the construction staff and office staff throughout the entire construction period. The results of the final project is a proud comment of their work ethic, communications and skills. If you wish to discuss further our experience with Trevor Landscaping, please contact Trevor and he will provide you with our contact information. All the best with your landscape project! Dave did a fantastic job on our property! We haven't done anything except cut the grass in the past 2 years, and he cleaned it up so nice I couldn't believe our landscaping could look so good! He gave us by far the best price and did extra stuff to make sure we were satisfied and the house was ready for our realtor to come take pictures. He didn't even require a deposit and said we could pay as the work was done. Very honest and hard working man. Made great suggestions on how to give our front yard more curb appeal without breaking the bank. We were able to put the house up for sale a couple days after Dave was done with landscaping and junk removal, as the outside looked absolutely great. I would highly recommend Dave's services to anyone. I have dealt with a lot of different types of contractors and handymen over the last few months while fixing the house up for sale, and Dave was hands down the most honest, detail oriented, and pleasant to work with. Very happy with everything he did and would not hesitate at all to hire him again.

Craig is as professional as he is creative. He and his crew reliably show up on the day they say and work diligently until the job is done to your satisfaction. His crew, like Craig, is honest, hard-working and personable. Craig installed an amazingly beautiful back patio complete with gorgeous flowering wall beds. More recently, Craig designed a sleek, modern in-ground pool. He is managing well the pool subcontractor and installing all surrounding hard- and landscape . We wouldn't consider using anyone else.

    About

I am a designer in Brooklyn who has a background in the following: * Landscape architecture * Graphic design * Set design * Industrial design * Film production I have recently been working as a set designer for Broadway shows as well as large music festivals. I have received a degree in landscape architecture from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, CA. I am currently looking to help people design or maintain their backyard or patio. I find great joy in working with clients to achieve an amazing outdoor space.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
