Hired for a 1:00 PM move and received a call at 12:53 PM saying he had been rear-ended but would still make it within an hour. I then received another call at 1:36 PM asking where I was with time and if maybe we could do the move tomorrow. The move had to be completed on the scheduled day, so I said I would find somebody else. He then said he was 30 minutes away and at a U-Haul location, and that he was going to get a truck because he “doesn’t leave his clients stranded.” I called back at 2:02 PM to ask for a progress update. He said, “I’m getting the truck now,” which meant he was still in New Jersey when he needed to come into New York. There was no way he was going to make it on time, and I explained that the move needed to be completed by 3:00–3:30 PM. I still gave him another opportunity and called back again at 2:27 PM for another progress update. He said he would be on his way, and the arrival time showed 3:10 PM. At that point, I told him to forget it, and he hung up the phone. About a minute later, he called back and said it was a poor connection and asked if I had really said to forget it. I said yes, because he was not going to make it on time and I would handle it myself. I ended up reserving a U-Haul within five minutes, picked it up ten minutes later, and completed the move myself. Personally, I think he may not have been truthful about the accident. I feel like he was trying to complete another move beforehand and got caught up with timing. Since I had a strict time crunch, that simply was not feasible for me. My recommendation: if you’re on a tight schedule, have a backup plan or go with someone else. Things happen, and business is business.
