I briefly took guitar lessons from Josh. I wanted to learn to play with other musicians and improvise, and his jazz background is what caught my attention. The sessions were informative and Josh was very encouraging. I had to stop unexpectedly but what I learned in the few lessons I took was very helpful and got me out of the rut I fall into while practicing on my own.

This was one of those situations where you read through 100 reviews, find a company wit great feedback, and then use that company and see the reviews were correct. Soulful Sounds played and sang live music for my Wedding Ceremony and my Cocktail Hour. They were AMAZING! I got so many compliments on how great my band was. I gave them songs to learn about two months before the wedding, and they really got together to learn and practice the songs. This is the band you want at your event.

I follow Nico's gigs as regularly as possible and have been doing so ever since her fledgling days as a singer song-writer. I love her original music as it has captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics . She is quite tenacious in getting herself "out there" and in so doing, she leaves me breathless with all the things she does to promote her talents at any one time. I like to go with friends to hang out at her various gigs and be entertained by her while casually enjoying good food rather than a cover band with very loud music. Nico is a very talented singer and musician who plays different instruments equally well.

Marla Mase is an extraordinary event planner, creator of party magic and Producer! After having been in the business for a couple of decades and working in so many different venues, types of events, parties and performances, Marla has an incredible team. She’s amassed a phenomenal, devoted group of performers, artists, designers & caterers whom she employs at all her parties, depending on need and skill set. I have worked with Marla on several creative projects and events and had a ball working with her. She is the ultimate professional, but always works in a relaxed, easygoing fashion. She is open to discussion and will always brainstorm to bring ones vision to life. Recently she produced a Rock show and party in Tribeca for me that hosted an amazing band, along with several international actors, dancers and singers. Marla hired one of her designers to transform the old Tribeca firehouse into an underworld of sea creatures and magic. It was spectacular. The food was a beautifully abundant array of hors devours and beverages. Hailing from Tribeca and having worked in the New York area for so many years for hundreds of high-end clients, Marla is truly cutting edge. She has an eye for the unique, and is able to adapt to the vision of her client. Marla really gets the job done. She’s personable and lovely and I always feel I’m in good hands with her at the helm.

Chanan was a joy to work with! Knowledgeable and skilled and very creative. He helped produce a record of sacred music for me and also provided back up guitar for my band when needed a few times in Dallas. He is an exceptional engineer and guitar player with a fine ear for detail.

Jonathan Kalb has been my guitar teacher now for a little over a half a year and I’m delighted to say, I am much more than pleased with my lessons; I can’t wait until the next one comes…that’s how good. I took lessons previously and was OK with them, but found myself wandering and lacking a sense of ‘commitment’ to the teacher and to my studies. Dry. I’m not a kid anymore and was looking for a teacher who could work with my adult enthusiasm, excitement, my talent, and not be rooted to teaching me the pentatonic scales in all keys before we could get to some playing and having some fun, too... I was hoping for a teacher who could personalize his teaching skills, and for me, Jonathan came through with flying colors. He’s so much more than a “One Size Fits All” teacher; he’s a real person – reachable, able to identify my needs, my strengths and weaknesses, and takes this into full consideration during our lessons. He’s an experienced, talented teacher. Simple. He’s a person that really knows his stuff from musical theory to the many styles of playing, i.e., blues, jazz, folk, country and even rock; he can play and more importantly – he can teach um all! I’m an aspiring singer/songwriter and in addition to helping me define those strange chords I’m playing, he inspires me to ‘grow on.’ Oh, and one more thing: If your lesson is an hour long and there’s something important happening, he won’t cut you off - he’ll take the extra time needed to get you to the end of ‘the measure,’ comfortably.

Daisy is a fantastic teacher! I am a trained musician but very shy singer, and have been learning from Daisy to help me singing with my band. These lessons have really developed my confidence, helped me find and trust in my own voice, and sing with better technique as my mind is not constricting my sound anymore. Her lessons are peaceful and meditative - she teaches without judgement and with gentle guidance to finding your own sound (previous vocal teachers have always been trying to mould my voice into a preconceived idiomatic sound). The crystal and Tibetan singing bowls are just magical! I can't imagine where my singing would be without her.

I came to Sarah with a goal of wanting to accompany myself as a singer, instead of having to rely on a guitarist or a band. In less than a year I played my first solo show. Sarah has prepared me to play solo, with a band, how to rearrange songs, how to read sheet music and so much more. Every lesson I learn something different. She’s made learning piano fun and interesting. Sarah is very patient, kind and extremely talented. I’d never go anywhere else!

Helene was my piano teacher from kindergarten through high school. She taught me how to read, understand, play and love music. Furthermore, my early -and in-depth- start with piano prepared me for years of trumpet in various advanced bands. Although I am not currently taking lessons, I still sit down to play piano whenever I get the chance. I'll play anything from Bach to Beethoven to Josh Groban to new and classic Disney - really anything I'm in the mood for. Helene's teaching has made me proficient enough in piano and music in general such that I can truly enjoy playing. Thanks Helene!!

We hired the band to play at our neighborhood block party and they were awesome! Music was enjoyed by all, from young children to senior citizens. They played a great very variety of music including Jazz standards and popular tunes. They were very professional, played as scheduled and at just the right volume.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
