About
My dog Oliver came into my life over 11 years ago and changed everything I thought I knew about having a dog. The relationship we built through positive reinforcement — based on mutual trust and curiosity rather than fear and intimidation — set me on the path to helping other dogs and their people do the same. I'm Erin Whelan, a certified dog behavior specialist (CPDT-KA, CSAP-BC, FDM) serving Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, and Manhattan. I specialize in the cases that feel impossible — leash reactivity, separation anxiety, resource guarding, aggression, and dogs preparing for a new baby. If another trainer has turned you away, reach out. My goal is always to give you the skills and knowledge to succeed without me. You'll learn how to build new behaviors and how to reduce unwanted ones — in a way that actually fits your real life. If you're willing to listen when your dog says "No, thank you" and figure out how to turn that into a "Yes, please!" — let's get started.

If you have a fear based reactive dog - look no further than Little Wolf Dog Training! Our beloved dog Fozzie has fear based reactivity - bite record and all. He also happens to be the sweetest, goodest, silliest boy in the lands - for those in his inner circle. He had a tough life prior to steeling our hearts and his prior family did a lot of damage. As such the last 9 years have been a labor of love to help Fozzie live the happiest - safest - life possible. Things got higher stakes about a year ago when we found out I was pregnant. The thought that Fozzies limitations might prevent him from being able to happily, safely co-exist with our daughter was too much to bear. ENTER Erin - founder of Little Wolf. I truly cannot say enough good things about Erin. Not only is she VERY much in Fozzies inner circle (this says an lot as many trainers havent made it inwhich makes training all but impossible with a dog like Fozzie m), but most importantly she understands humans as much as she does dogs and her positive reinforcement approach to training reflects that and so do the results. Erin is able to explain dog behavior in a way that makes sense, she also dosent over complicate training. Shes deeply empathetic and has always made me feel supported in my thoughts - and in my fears. While she dosent sugar coat things, nor does she promise miracles over night - if you stick with her you will absolutely see the results in a happier, calmer, better trained dog. Because of her - not only are we better understand Fozzie, his limitations, and his behaviors, tailoring our training around these for greater success - but we have able to safely and happily have him coexist with our daughter. While we are aware that as our daughter grows we will have to continue to work with Fozzie and their shared environment - having Erin as part of Team Fozzie makes me feel extremely confident that we will be getting the best care and training to help give Fozzie the best shot at success and a safe and happy life. If you have a fear based reactive dog, are looking to prep your pup for a new addition to the family - or honestly just want to work on select obedience- Erin and Little Wolf are the gold standard!!!

Team Fozzie! I'm always proud of the work you guys are doing, but you've really knocked it out of the park in the last few months. I know it hasn't always been easy to manage a challenging dog AND a new baby at the same time, but hopefully seeing Fozzie interacting with her now in a relaxed, and positive way makes it all worth it. I look forward to offering additional support as Fozzie and his new sister continue to grow and change together :)

I cant say enough about Erin and Little Wolf Dog Training. We were first introduced last year when I got my Bernedoodle puppy, Cornelius. He was (and still is) an extremely shy and timid dog with a lot of urban anxiety. Most walks ended up in a lot of pancaking in fear or reactiveness around other dogs/new objects. I really struggled with helping Cornelius to acclimate to life in the city (I live in the East Village so its extremely lively) and after being turned away from another program due to his reactiveness, I was referred to Erin and her Day School program in Midtown West. This was a game changer.Erin welcomed Cornelius to Day School and really helped to lay the groundwork to a well-adjusted and confidant dog. Through Erins Day School program, she began to socialize Cornelius with other pups in a safe and fully-supervised environment. Erin built upon his skills and introduced critical components to his (and my) training toolbox. Her positive reinforcement methodology was effective, engaging, and demonstrated a deep understanding on how to work with reactive and anxious pups. The daily report cards afterwards (along with pictures and videos) provided detailed insight into his day, as well as notes on what we should continue to work on at home. As an added benefit, this enabled me to return to work in office with comfort that Cornelius was well-looked after. I have also taken the Calm Canine group course with Erin and would recommend this to those who want to work on techniques to manage reactiveness in their pups towards other dogs. While the goal of Day School was to help acclimate and eventually prepare Cornelius for a transition to doggy daycare, he loves going to Day School so much that I continue to send him twice a month as a supplement to daycare (which Cornelius has successfully been able to transition to with Erins help!). Thank you so much to Erin who has really been such an invaluable resource and safe space for my questions and Cornelius development. I would recommend Erin as a trainer or her Day School program for those looking!

We were so incredibly fortunate to luck into finding Erin! My husband and I have been working closely with her since just a week after bringing our dog Virgil home. While Virgil is an absolute love bug, hes also got a lot of big feelings that have translated into some negative behaviours like reactivity, barrier frustration, aversion to handling, and other things that were really overwhelming from the start for first-time dog guardians.Erins been an incredible partner in helping us understand him and how to set him up for success, and in addition to teaching Virgil so many things, has also taught us the best way to manage him and help him have the happiest life. Hes now two and a half and, while were still working through his reactivity towards selective dogs, hes a million times better, all thanks to her partnership.Erin is thoughtful and dedicated, and works really hard to adjust her training programs and approach to each dog and their individual quirks. While she is very practical, she never comes from a place of judgment or I know better than you shes incredible at understanding not just the needs of the dog, but also his or her humans, so that they can have the most successful relationship. She knows a ton but never pretends to know more than she does, and she has an incredible volume of contacts around NYC if something (like, for example, prescribing medication) is out of her wheelhouse. I know our relationship with Virgil our mutual trust, adoration, understanding, and communication is so strong thanks to Erins guidance and care. Its so clear how very much she loves dogseven, or perhaps especially, the weirdos like Virgiland wants what is best for them. We trust her completely and are fortunate beyond measure to be able to work with her. If youre a first-time dog owner or overwhelmed with a particularly particular pup, you cant go wrong working with her.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Ola! Particularly particular pups are indeed close to my heart. Being part of Team Virgil has taught me so much, and I've loved watching your relationship with him grow over the years. I've always admired your commitment to giving him the very best dog-life you can, improving your communication with him, and offering clear, kind guidance. Thank you for being part of the Little Wolf family!

I couldnt possibly recommend Erin and Little Wolf Dog Training enough! My pup Benjamins tail wags so hard when he sees her, Im always afraid hes about to take flight! We are longtime day school fans in particular. I love that Benjamin has a safe space where he can learn and hang and play, all supervised by someone who understands (and loves) his quirks. He has learned so much from his trainer bff, especially how to peacefully coexist with other little wolves. Erins thoughtful and informative reports - and adorable videos - are great for the humans afterward. Run (or calmly leash walk) your dog to Little Wolf as soon as you can!

Erin is the best - loving, attuned to our "moppet" and her idiosyncrasies. More importantly, she is a also an excellent "hooman" trainer - teaching us new tricks and helping us learn how to read body signals. 10 out of 10 recommend her highly!
Little Wolf Dog Training's reply
Thank you so much, Team Moppet! Our weekly Day Training Session is one of the highlights of my week every week, and I'm so grateful for your continued support. Whether it's a learning a new trick, or learning to comfortably tolerate being groomed, our girl is always up for the challenge and I love that about her. I'm looking forward to many more years of working with this silly girl and her entire, exceptional family!
