About
I teach Spanish and English to adults. Whether you're learning Spanish for work, travel, or family, or sharpening your English for your career or an exam like the IELTS, you'll get the same thing from me: precision. Teaching has been the throughline of my career for nearly twenty years, three of them as a dedicated ESL instructor. I've spent that career looking for the structure underneath things, first in the ground as an archaeologist working in the US, Ecuador, Panama, and France, now in language. There is real satisfaction in watching someone go from translating word by word in their head to simply thinking in a new language. That shift is not incremental. It's a kind of arrival, and I've built my teaching around getting people there faster than they expect. My Spanish is lived, not just studied: I've used it through years of fieldwork alongside farmers in Ecuador and Panama, and I still conduct and translate interviews in it today. I bring to all of my teaching a set of tools most instructors don't have: fluency in Spanish and English, professional proficiency in French, working knowledge of Slovak, and two decades of experience communicating complex material across language and cultural gaps with adult learners at every level, from complete beginners to advanced professionals.

I highly recommend Miriam as an ESL teacher. I had a pleasure of learning from her for over a year and she is truly a wonderful teacher. First, she is passionate and dedicated. She knows how to engage her students, spark their curiosity, and motivate them to take their learning to next level. Her class is highly interactive and she captures students’ interest and have the students explore a topic beyond what students initially expected. Second, she is knowledgeable. Since she has experience as an archeologist, she has extensive expertise on global history and culture. She often share the stories and origins behind English words and expressions. Thus, the class is not simply studying vocabulary and grammar but the way to learn about history and world.(If you prefer something particular, like focusing on grammar, she is so flexible and will adapt your needs.) Last but not least, she is a good facilitator. She encourages her students to share their thoughts and keep conversations flowing. In this sense, she is not only an English teacher but a wonderful coach. Through studying with Miriam, I realize there are so many things that I didn’t know, or haven’t cultivated. If you are looking forward to an ESL teacher, who inspire you, encourage you, and help you see the world from broader perspective, I highly recommend Miriam.

Miriam is genuinely one of the smartest people I have ever met. For the past three years, she has tutored me in English, advanced vocabulary, and Spanish, helping me communicate more professionally in my fitness videos and with my worldwide clientele. Her guidance has made me a more knowledgeable and confident content creator, helped me connect with clients in other countries, and played a huge role in growing my business.
I have learned so much more from Miriam than just vocabulary. Her knowledge reaches into almost every subject, and I have never met anyone who knows so much about so many different things. Her personal library has over 1,000 books 📚—it gives me anxiety just thinking about how much information her brain holds 🧠.
What truly sets Miriam apart is how much she cares about your success. She is devoted, patient, encouraging, always prompt and on time, and genuinely excited to help you improve. After three years of working together, she has become like family to me. I could not recommend her highly enough to anyone looking for an incredible tutor and an even better person.

Paul, three years of watching you build a language for your work out of vocabulary, grammar, and everything in between has been one of the real pleasures of what I do. Language was never going to be separable from the rest of it for us, not when the goal was reaching clients across cultures, and not given how much you wanted to talk about everything else along the way. That's always been my instinct about teaching: it's never just the words, it's the whole apparatus of thought they carry. Your growth, professionally and otherwise, has been genuinely gratifying to watch. Thank you for trusting me with it, and for the kind words, they mean a great deal.

I highly recommend Miriam, especially if you want to learn more than just English.
When I first moved to the U.S., so many things about American life and culture were unfamiliar to me. What I loved most about these lessons was that my teacher never just answered my questions on the surface. Whenever I asked about something I experienced in daily life, Miriam took the time to explain the cultural and historical background behind it. Because of that, I learned not only English, but also so much about American culture and history.
Another thing I truly appreciated was how kind and caring my teacher was. During a difficult period when I was feeling lonely and depressed after moving to a new country, our lessons became something I genuinely looked forward to. Miriam's warmth and encouragement meant a lot to me.
This was much more than an English class—it helped me understand the U.S. and feel more comfortable living here. I would especially recommend this teacher to anyone who is new to America and wants to learn English while also gaining a deeper understanding of American culture and everyday life.

Jiyeon, thank you for trusting me with all of this, not just the language. Moving somewhere new means learning a whole grammar of unstated assumptions, the ones nobody hands you in a textbook because the people who grew up inside them never had to name them. That was always going to be as much a part of the work as vocabulary. I'm glad the history and context behind things helped some of it make sense. And I'm glad, too, that the lessons were something to look forward to during a hard stretch. That matters to me as much as anything else in this list. Thank you for the kind words, and for the trust.

I attended Miriam's conversational classes and it was a blast! Classes were always engaging, and she paid attention to every student. Every conversational class was excellently structured and enhanced both my English and my understanding of the cultural aspects of the language. When Miriam explained difficult grammatical points, her explanations were always precise and easy to understand. Highly recommend!

Timur, thank you for this. What you describe as "conversational class" is really the thing I care most about getting right; language isn't a code to be cracked in isolation from the world that produced it, so grammar and culture have to move together or neither one lands. I'm glad that structure came through, and I've valued watching your English sharpen alongside your read on the cultural terrain underneath it. It was a pleasure having you as a student.

Miriam taught me over the past year, and the quality of her classes has truly exceeded my expectations. She is an excellent teacher, knowledgeable, well organized, and thoughtful in the way she structures each class.
What I especially appreciate is that she teaches much more than just English. She also shares her knowledge of culture, history, and everyday life, which makes the classes much more interesting and meaningful. I’ve learned a lot from her over the past year and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an excellent teacher.

Thank you so much for this, Amy. It means a great deal, especially coming after a full year of working together. I've genuinely enjoyed our classes, and I always believe that learning a language well means learning the world it lives in, not just the grammar, so I'm glad that's come through. Thank you for your trust and your consistency over the past year, and for taking the time to write this. It's exactly the kind of detail that helps others understand what working together actually looks like.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
· Private sessions $75/hr · Group sessions $40/hr per person (2–4 students)
· Free 15-minute Zoom consultation
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We start with a free 15-minute consultation, not to sell you anything, but to actually listen. I want to know what you need English for, specifically: a promotion, a client-facing role, an exam, simple confidence. From there I build a plan around that goal rather than a generic curriculum. Grammar and structure come first, because everything else depends on it, but I layer in real material fast, workplace emails, presentations, the kind of English you'll actually use, so progress feels tied to your life and not to a textbook.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a PhD in Anthropology, with a career built on interpreting and communicating complex material across language and cultural lines, first as an archaeologist working in Ecuador, Panama, and France, later as an oral historian conducting interviews in English, Spanish, and French. I taught university courses for four years and have taught ESL, levels zero through advanced, for nearly two decades, including hands-on experience preparing students for the IELTS exam. I don't hold a formal ESOL certification, but I'd put my track record up against one.
