I'm very happy that I hired Jerome to put together a day bed with trundle, which had large number of wooden slats on which the mattresses go, which needed to be all properly installed to provide the spring effect, aside from putting together the actual bed and a roll-out -- two large boxes with lots of small parts in which the item was delivered. Jerome has done a superb job, with a great attention to detail which was especially necessary in this case, but I didn't need to mention anything to him, he already knew the nuance with springy slats and their direction. He finished sooner than I thought it would take, which just shows his skill, experience, and resultant efficiency. He accommodated my schedule and did the job after 5 pm, which I appreciate very much as a customer with a busy schedule. I also want to note Jerome's great communication skills in that he kept communication to a necessary minimum, not requiring extra attention, direction, or decision-making on my part, yet I felt assured that he asked me all that I had to tell him and would ask me more should there be a need. In summary -- a fast, high quality work, with no frills, exceptions, breakdowns and excuses, just exemplary work ethic and professionalism -- all that combined with his most competitive bid on my project with a fixed price commitment (not an estimate and then an hourly rate for the actual work -- the experience I had before). I can't be more satisfied with Jerome and his work, would definitely call on him again for my future needs, will be suggesting him to my friends and recommend him to anybody who is considering hiring him. Thanks, Jerome.

If you need an IKEA hacker, G&M is for you!! Hired Greivin to retrofit IKEA cabinet systems for my quirky Manhattan apartment with uneven wall and floors. The project got complicated, with lots of troubleshooting required. The job was done as I expected. Greivin is professional, flexible and kind. Highly recommend him and would definitely hire him again. Thanks Greivin!!

I live in a duplex apartment that has not been updated in 20 years! I am a single mother and know nothing about renovations. I interviewed a few handymen and when I met Pete, I knew he was the one for the job. He didn’t try to take advantage of me and was very reasonable. He was such an amazing help to me that I couldn’t believe I got so lucky. He was fantastic in taking my ideas and making them come true. I ended up redoing every room in my apartment including the bathroom. Pete even took me to Home Depot and the paint store so I can pick up supplies. He saved me a lot of money with his expertise in the products that I needed. He was always on time, a great communicator, extremely easygoing, trustworthy, respectful and always responded via text or a phone call when I needed him. He is an amazing guy! My son and I actually were joking that we were going to miss him when he was finished…. And we do! I will be hiring him again to hang an oversized picture above a staircase soon. I have run a business in Union, NJ for over 20 years, www.Njvision.com. I know how important reviews are for good hard working people and also as a customer. If you would like to reach out to me with any questions about Pete’s work, feel free to email me (Tuli Santiago) at my website. I am difficult to please….Do yourself a favor and stop looking. YOU FOUND HIM! Pete, thank you so much for all your hard work. Here is a picture of the living room floor. LOVE IT!!!!

Giovanny did a great job for my basement pointing project. I just moved into a house that was recently renovated but originally built in 1892. The previous owners heavily prioritized cosmetic changes but did not do any foundation/structural work work. The brick foundation was quite crumbly and some bricks were missing. Giovanny estimated that pointing hadn't been done for probably 15 years. There was a layer of paint over the bricks as well so Giovanny had to scrape the paint in order to do the pointing. I also needed the base of my front steps (underneath the structure) to be filled in and smoothed over and for him to fix a pretty big crack where the outside concrete stairs meet the house. Giovanny was able to beat a quote from another thumbtack pro and gave me a very reasonable price. Giovanny was punctual, professional, finished the job in two days. The only area for improvement worth noting is clean up. I did have to request that Giovanny clean up the mess on the basement floor before he left. He did the best he could without any cleaning supplies. He didn't bring any and I just moved in so everything was in boxes. But in spite of this, he still deserves the full 5 stars as his work is high quality for a fair price. I will be hiring Giovanny again for any masonry needs in the future.

Ruperto Castellanos did an excellent job and was wonderful to work with! Not only did he do a great job with the painting but also went above and beyond to help me with a few minor fixes in the apartment. He made sure all the walls were smooth before painting them. He was professional and pleasant. He was punctual and finished the job right on time as estimated. I would highly recommend anytime!

My experience was good, it was just a little hasty and sloppy. There are still a few stains on my couch that need to be cleaned. It just seemed really rushed. The guy I had was very nice and he did a good job, but there was water on the floor and my hardwood floors were scratched from moving the couch. Just would have appreciated a little slower pace.

After a recent poor experience with a contractor on this site, we were a little gun shy! But James and his crews are definite pros. We had them install 2 vinyl tile and 1 ceramic tile floors. It was completed in the time he gave us. They were clean and courteous. And the work was done to our satisfaction. Will definitely hire him again

Tom and his team are top-notch professionals with high standards and impeccable integrity. He has respect for your time, your home and the project costs. He did a complete gut renovation of my kitchen, refinished floors in my living area and floor installation in my master bedroom, which was on-time and within my budget. In fact, I decided to hire him to do two bathroom renovations, door installations and stair redesign. He is patient, knowledgeable and an excellent communicator throughout the various projects. His work speaks for itself.

Out of more than 7-8 contractors that I enquired, I chose C&A Improvements to sand, stain and refinish our old hardwood floors. The job required lot of prep work like ripping the carpet, removing the nails, filling the holes etc. Carlos Netos, the owner of C&A came across as a very decent and honest person, a thorough professional who clearly understood our requirements immediately and gave us a detailed estimate. He also suggested a variety of options and also cautioned us with the DO's and DONT's during and after the job. This really helped us in preparing ourselves and making decisions. The people who came to work knew their jobs well and were very punctual. Very satisified with their quality of work and overall result. I highly recommend C&A for their reliablity, quality of work, punctuality and their price! I wont think twice in recommending them to my friends! Satish I.

We hired DaNa for their odor removal services. Thanks to them, we got a fresh smelling home along with clean walls and floors when the process was over. I appreciated that Noemi, the lady who did the cleaning, was both friendly and thorough, while Francisco was very prompt on all communication. Also, unlike other deodorizing methods I had looked into, the equipment used by DaNa did not require the use of ozone or the evacuation of the premises making it a more eco-friendly solution without the additional hassle.

I recently inherited my grandfathers house and as a young women on her own it was intimidating having to deal with all the renovations that needed to be done. I submitted a request through thumbtack to have 1000 square ft of hardwood floors refinished after being covered up with carpet for almost 50 years, Wascar reached out to me within minutes to set up a time to see the house and give me an estimate. I had an appointment with 3 different companies and the quote I received from Acosta Floors was not only the best price but the owner also took the time to ask me questions about the work I wanted done and explained the differences between the various stains and sealers I could use to complete the process which none of the other companies I met with bothered to do. As a first time home owner with no experience with renovations my nervousness was put to rest, I felt I respected and confident putting my trust in Wascar. He came early that morning on the date we had scheduled and had the sanding completed the very same day. Arriving from work later in the evening the house was clean and there was absolutely no reside left from any of the dust created while they had been sanding. By the second day the floors had been stained and sealed and the work had been fully completed. I am beyond happy with how they turned out, the floors look absolutely incredible, even exceeded my expectations. I am so grateful to Wascar for his service. The quality of his work and professionalism with which he runs his business is truly appreciated, I would recommend him to anyone looking to have hardwood floor refinished in their home. I have added some pictures and will add more once I am able to walk through the house and get shots of the bedrooms, closets, entry way and living room. Thank you Wascar!

Luis accommodated me for a free estimate and shortly after completed my hardwood floors which included staining as well. He assisted me with getting beautiful floor vents for my central air and also purchased and installed the saddle needed prior to the flooring job. He worked late and arrived very early to enable us to be back in our home within a few days. The floors came out amazing and he was professional throughout. I highly recommend using L&M Flooring.

It is my pleasure to recommend the excellent work of Rick Doggett who was the general contractor for a remodeling project of my apartment in Jersey City. From the initial interaction and proposal phase through construction and the timely completion of the job, Rick and his crew performed at the highest level of professionalism, work ethics, and dedication. The work involved a complete re-structure of the internal floor plan, moving walls, installing new fixtures, hardwood floor and carpet, electrical, plumbing, and painting, while communicating with an owner who was not on location. I would, with no hesitation, engage Rick in any future construction or remodeling that will come-up. Thank you Rick and crew for a wonderful job.

My wife and I had All Rise Flooring install hardwood floors in every room of shore house in Deal, NJ. Can not say enough about the level of professionalism throughout the entire process. We felt extremely comfortable with the owner, as he was very personable and quick to respond to calls/emails with any questions we had. He even followed up 2 weeks after the job to make sure everything was still in place. Pricing was fair and well worth the quality of work/service we received. A+

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
