Introduction
CONGRATULATIONS TO . . . My voice student, COLTON, for being cast in the lead role of Flounder in his middle school's Spring 2025 musical production of "The Little Mermaid." My voice student, JAZZ, for being cast as a Who in her high school's Spring 2025 production of "Seussical the Musical. My adult voice student, BRUNETTE JOSEPH, on the release of her first single, Pran Kè Mwen, on all streaming platforms. NOTE: It would by my pleasure to provide you with my music lessons so please read thru my profile below to ensure that my background and professional experience matches your musical goals. I mention this because thumbtack.com charges us a hefty fee to respond to quote requests and I want to make sure that you are confident that I could be the right teacher for you. Thanks very much! REMOTE LESSONS: Until further notice, unfortunately I am ONLY offering remote piano and voice lessons via Zoom from your computer or smartphone. Under normal circumstances (after COVID-19) students may resume traveling to me for their lessons at my home studio in NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ. I love teaching piano and voice, and over these many years I have had the privilege of working with students young and old alike, from 5-yrs-old to 65-yrs-old, helping them to achieve their musical goals: for budding pianists in teaching them how to play or for seasoned professionals helping them to improve their playing/reading skills. The same goes for voice/singing lessons: learning or reinforcing all the skills it takes to be a singer and applying them to song to create our version of “magic!” I take what I've learned and experienced for these past 45+ years and apply that to a fun and productive learning environment. Most importantly, I love seeing the looks on my student's faces when they realize the improvements that they've made through our time together and their hard work. Their accomplishments, either finally mastering a piano piece that we've been slaving over, or breaking through a vocal brick wall that's been in our way from achieving that goal. There are very few things in life more beautiful than witnessing this kind of success; it's just a great feeling that we share and celebrate. What you should know about me is that music has truly been the biggest and longest part of my life. I started playing piano at the age of 10ish, starting acting/singing on stage in school in 6th grade, and began working as a professional musician when I was about 13-yrs-old. As a pianist/keyboardist and singer, I worked every gig and venue possible: weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, Sweet 16's, proms, birthdays and anniversaries, dive bars, restaurants, high-end nite clubs like the Palladium NYC, concert venues including Lincoln Center and the Central Park Band Shell, street festivals . . . anything you could think of. I've been a Music Director/Accompanist for thirty-years for school, community and professional theater, and most recently with several current and past Broadway stars as well as the Tik Tok sensation, The Sharpe Family Singers, for over twelve years! It's all this combined experience that gives me a huge edge over many other teachers as I have put everything I teach into practice and then some. Additionally, I use professional recording equipment in my home studio for which to make demos, backing tracks CD’s for auditions and performances, and recordings that my student can use as a learning tool or to play for friends and family (maybe there’s another YouTube star in you?!) Some of my students even recorded holiday albums as gifts one year! Also, I have access to an enormous library of music using my studio computers that helps us to expand repertoires.

Marty taught my daughter how to sing with a stronger voice, breathing techniques, and importantly help build confidence in using her voice. I would highly recommend Marty for voice lessons.

Marty is an excellent teacher and even nicer guy. He will always treat you with respect and make you feel like you accomplished something. I always leave lessons happier than I did before; this feeling only gets stronger as you keep having lessons. I would recommend him to any beginner as well as someone who already has some experience because he always spots your mistakes and is able to correct them. In addition, he introduced me to musical theater music and jazz. This has been so useful for me not only because those genres require a different type of singing and mentality. But because it helped make my own music. Also, $60/hour is probably the best deal you're going to find with singing lessons. I would say the only con is that he has a lot of students so sometimes it's hard to get in touch with him or reschedule a lesson, but this hasn't really been a barrier for me and I doubt it is for many others. Overall, he's a great friend, great teacher and he has amazing value. 10/10, would recommend.

Details: 14 - 17 years old • Yes, the student can read music • No formal training; some self-taught experience • Pop • What the teacher recommends • Rock • 30 minutes • At the pro’s location • My home, venue, etc.

When I had my first singing lesson with Marty, it was immediately obvious why he has such stellar ratings on this site. First of all, he is EXTREMELY talented at singing and piano. That alone inspires a lot of confidence since you can tell he practices what he preaches. In a way, it is also motivational because you start thinking to yourself "wow, I want to sound like that one day." Marty really excels in how he explains techniques and concepts to you. He does it in a way that makes sense to you personally, and he will make sure you understand before moving on. I also love how honest and straightforward he is. He will give you great feedback on what you can work on, and you can tell there is no BS with anything that he tells you.  He is everything that I was looking for in a teacher, and my only regret is that I didn't reach out to him sooner. Looking back, I think I wasted far too much time trying to teach myself without the right foundation in vocal technique.. Better late than never though! If you are on the fence about getting a vocal coach, do yourself a favor and book a lesson with Marty! There is no commitment to do follow up lessons (unlike some other sites I tried for the same type of service), so it doesn't hurt to just try one and see how you feel about it. Knowing how great of a teacher Marty is, I can pretty confidently say you'll be back for more though!

I'd been thinking about taking voice lessons for quite some time. Thumbtack sent me a few names for consideration but Marty's profile suggested that we would work well and productively together. My gut read on his profile proved to be spot on. Marty has proven himself to be a patient, thoroughly knowledgeable and gifted mentor. His best practices involve understanding your baseline, identifying potential areas of improvement, structuring the appropriate vocal exercises to address those areas, and still factoring in enough “fun time” in a lesson to sing the stuff you want to. I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in my vocal skills compared to 2 months ago. That’s not an easy thing to accomplish considering Marty had to help me unlearn years of reinforced bad habits. I highly recommend Marty, if you want to improve your vocal skills.
