Glenn has seriously turned out to be the absolute best contractor that I have ever worked with! Ive had the opportunity to work with several others, both at my homes and at my businesses. A few contractors have been good, doing nice work for a fair price, but they were either too slow, too unreliable, or just couldn’t come up with creative ways to do things that were needed. Glenn completely remodeled a new salon for me, and built a custom color bar shelf, front desk, reclaimed beam stylist counter, and retail shelves. He worked with my budget, helping me make decisions based on the priorities, and was extremely friendly, professional, and reliable every step of the way. He went above and beyond, even facetiming with me or communicating with my husband when I was under the weather and couldn’t make it to the job site. I highly recommend him for any project, and will be using his services for every future project that I have, both in business and my home.

arrived and provided an estimate, started punctually, completed a difficult project (removing aluminum siding) that others would not tackle, and replaced original siding w/o damage, made repairs and improvements and stuck to the estimate; cleaned up and removed debris, Mark Lis restored my faith in dealing with contractors- I would recommend Lis Improvements- with more stars if available. A long delayed project completed to satisfaction

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

Really awesome job - very pleased. I've had a lot of problems with contractors in the past, but Rick restored my faith that there actually are some good, honest contractors out there. The work was done on time and on budget, even though my house threw a couple of curve balls at them (crappy wiring, inconvenient duct work, etc.). So picture this: Rick and team removed the wall between our kitchen and dining room - yet, the house was so clean during the time that they were working that my wife and I cooked in the kitchen, and my family to ate in the dining room, EVERY NIGHT. I have a newborn baby, so I was concerned about the disruption to the household, but we were amazed that the work was so unobtrusive. One other thing I would point out was the attention to detail in finishing the job off - for instance, Rick put this great molding around the top section (where the light is) to match the décor in the dining room. I wouldn't even have thought of that (!), but you can see how it ties everything together. Attention to detail is important, and they really nailed it. Good stuff - everything turned out way better than we expected. Definitely recommend.

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to share my success story with you, I hired STP and Home Decor to hang drywall in my unfinished basement the I had another contractor begin. Unbenonced to me at the time the previous contractors work was less then commendable. Joseph and his crew came into my home treated me with dignity and respect corrected the other contractors mistakes and gave me an awesome price. Now that my drywall is hung I have hired them to comple the painting and put down my new floor I'm sure it will be spectacular. I look forward to sharing the total transformation of my new living area with you thanks to Joseph of STP and Home Decor

I initially contacted Steven for a simple sink repair; however, I quickly needed other work performed. He has since installed drywall, repaired and painted the concrete in my utility closet, and installed a GFI outlet in my bathroom. His work is impeccable. I highly recommend Get a Project Completed. And will happily request his professional contractor services in the future.

Will's Home Remodeling was the general contractor for my major residential renovation at 183Jordan Road in Somers Point NJ. The project took about 4 months to complete where we completely gutted and renovated this badly damaged home that sat vacant for over 5 years. This was a $100k+ renovation for total labor and materials and Will and his team were the glue that kept the project on track and within budget. Will and his team personally completed all new vinyl siding, all new windows, new roofing, new gutters, new insulation, several new walls, stucco and cement repair, new stair steps, bathroom and shower and back splash and accent tile work, kitchen cabinet installation, wall board, spackling, caulking, trim work, door frames, shower doors and many miscellaneous requests. Will partnered well with some challenging subcontractors in the areas of plumbing, electrical, outside concrete, flooring and granite counter top installation. When the other subcontractors dropped the ball, Will was always there with a creative solution and to help get them back on task. I would definitely hire Wills Home Remodeling for my next project.

Not only did I receive a quote quickly, but all the responses to my questions came fast as well. At the end of the job, the last step requires you to go back through the following 7 steps to add something optional that would improve the integrity of my gazebo. Without hesitation, he went back all 7 steps and did the job to perfection. Many contractors would have thrown away the parts, collected their money and left. Not here! I will recommend to Family and friends and hope I can find another project to leverage them. Thanks again!

I hired General Contractors Co. for replacing 70% of my house sidewalk. Garry Moore was professional, he showed up on time and completed the task exactly how he promised and on schedule. He even performed a follow up visit after the completion of the project to check on things. Both the cost and the quality were reasonable.

We interviewed several contractors for a major shore house refurbishment and Brad and his team were selected for many reasons outside of those stated. The project which essentially involved building work and decoration throughout the house, new bathrooms, electrics, new floors, walls and ceilings as well as extensive outside work to the building was flawlessly executed and has resulted in the delivery of a beautiful house that we love. Brad was possibly one of the most creative, professional and communicative contractors I have ever worked with and I would have no hesitation in recommending Brad & his company for any job however large or small.

I hired Greg from Third Generation welding who came out and gave me an estimate to repair my back porch steps which were literally falling apart. I had tried to get other welding companies in my area to come out for an estimate with a bunch of no shows I had finally given up. Greg came out gave me an estimate and was able to work with my budget I had set aside for the job. He turned this job from something I had given up on with other contractors to a very pleasant experience. His work is excellent and I could tell he took pride in what he was doing. The final result was great. I will definitely be calling him back and I would recommend him for any other welding projects that come up.

Matt and Mark are as professional as any contractor I've worked with previously. They were courteous, intelligent, honest, and good at what they do. I hired them to renovate a 35+ year old shower that had drainage issues, no lighting, mold, and was leaking into the adjoining rooms. While this type of work isn't cheap, the quality of their work (as you can see) is superb; I easily gained an equal amount of increased home equity to the cost of this renovation. If you want high quality craftsmanship with no contractor hassle, look no further than W.M. Dahl, LLC. I will not hesitate to hire they guys again. Thanks guys!

Before hiring Fran we spoke on the phone for roughly an hour. Fran gave us his full attention and was extremely professional and answered all of our questions. He sent over many pictures of the work he completed in the past. Projects large or small there was nothing Fran couldn't do. We are extremely thankful we found his company and we now have a contractor for life at the Jersey shore.

I'm so immensely happy with the remodel of my home. A & T was able to transform my grandmother's 1920's kitchen, dining room, bathroom and living room into something I'm proud of. The kitchen was so small that I couldn't open the refrigerator without hitting the kitchen counter! From orange & brown tiles and wood paneling, to now having a beautiful functioning kitchen with oak cabinets, tile floors and a cooking area I can move around in! They were able to knock down a wall and make my kitchen bigger without losing the integrity of the older home. Tim isn't some fly by night company. He does things the right way, as if he was remodeling his own home. I would definitely recommend Tim and his crew to anyone!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
