Rich did a great job trimming the hedges, they were done with great attention to detail and came out even and symmetrical. Rich also edged out multiple new beds and designed colorful perennial gardens for each. He was upfront and discussed all options with me before hand. His quote was reasonable and the job came in right at the price we discussed. Looking forward to having him take care of our bi-weekly lawn maintenance!

I chose Wide Stone Outdoor Services because I was immediately impressed by the responses and large landscaped estate photographs that landscaper Javier Torres placed on Thumbtack. I have certainly not been disappointed. I was so glad to find that he was willing to do my much smaller job. The work he did on my 55+ Adult community property was outstanding. I live on a golf course and everyone who passed remarked on the night and day difference my beautiful corner property now displays. Javier was personable and so very accomplished: in one day, he has literally transformed my entire landscaping: He refreshed and removed limbs from my older( but still able to flower) lovely ornamental cherry tree, and so, enabled sunshine to penetrate to our front lawn area. There, he laid sod and placed a sprinkler on a timer. My poor cherry tree was suffocating, in what I thought was a simple ivy, however, it was nothing less than poison ivy, climbing high up on the trunk of the tree. Javier's staff removed the poison ivy, treated the area where it had been growing, leveled it, cleaned up the rock border, mulched, and added a lovely selection of autumn marigolds around the base of my tree. He trimmed my pachysandra back, laid the sod on the now sunny lawn near that area, cleaned up and refreshed the small stone areas in my slider balcony areas; added azaleas on the side garden, after cleaning up, leveling, mulching and landscaping the long side Russian sage and azalea garden under my Japanese cherry tree. In the back facing the golf course he removed weeds, cut back and enormous holy and cleaned out a plot that we can now use for our big outdoor grill. Javier also added underground drains to all our downspouts, which will dissipate the rainwater and keep squirrels and chipmunks out of the spouts. We plan to use Wide Stone again throughout the year, and I know that my neighbors, who asked for his information, will call upon him too. Be sure to get extra business cards from Javier at Wide Stone Outdoor Services, you'll need them.

Elena designed a garden for our monastery in SketchUp,while adapting innovative ideas to meet the reguirements of the Russian Orthodox Church. She visits our monastery twice a year and bring from America some plants and seed that are still new in our area During her visits she works very hard and her dedication is remarkable. She goes to local nurseries and markets to select plants and then to install them. She also teaches us the basis principles of landscape design and effective plant combinations. It is very clear that Elena loves what she is doing and has been extremely flexible when confronted with any challenges. I can't recommend Dan enough. I recently moved to my first home in Brooklyn with outdoor space and wanted help getting a garden up and running on my patio. After coming by for a consultation, Dan came back with plants, soil, and tools and taught me how to plant and care for everything. He also set up an irrigation system for the new plants and helped me install outdoor lighting. The patio and garden look fantastic thanks to Dan's help. I will definitely work with him again!

I enjoy doing my own gardening, but needed help creating a cohesive design for my 1-acre lawn. Susan of The Crafted Garden evaluated my property, listened to my ideas, and then created a landscape design that could be implemented in stages. With Susan's crew, we completed the first stage this spring. Susan reoriented the approach to our home, widened beds, and created a planting scheme that tied the different areas together, incorporating native species that provide good habitats for birds. Susan and her crew were prompt, worked very quickly, and left the site clean. They accomplished in two weekends what would have taken me 6 months. We had a positive experience and I learned a great deal about the process. When we began, I was focused on the plants to be chosen. But it was Susan's careful preparation -- curving a walk here, arcing a bed there -- that showcased our home's best features, and set the stage for a garden that offers us color and lovely scent throughout the seasons. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Susan as a creative and knowledgeable partner.

Extensive education into plant identification, pesticides with an emphasis in organic use and IPM (Integrated Pest Management), Landscape design and aesthetics, proper plant placement and use. Knowing plants and their habits makes all the difference when planning a successful landscape or container design. Many plants look nice now in the nursery but become invasive, expensive problems in the near future. Or, they only thrive in certain light and wind conditions. Avoid these costly mistakes and hire a landscape designer that knows the difference and how to achieve your goals.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
