I hired Thomas to do a floor to ceiling custom built in with a window seat. I had provided incorrect measurements originally but he did an onsite visit prior to beginning his work and was able to adjust all measurements accordingly and make a gorgeous built in piece of furniture. We realized that he was more adept to handle many of our projects that we had hired other contractors do so we hired him to do additional work and to redo some work that had already been done. He stuck to the schedule that we set forth, was great at communicating, was extremely helpful at assessing situations and providing recommendations. We are very grateful and appreciative for the work that he did on the built in, our cabinet installation our vinyl floor installation, and many other small things around the house! Thanks to Thomas many aspects of our home will be wonderful. If you would like a verbal testimony please feel free to ask Thomas for my number. Once everything is done I hope to come back and add some more photos.

Glenn has seriously turned out to be the absolute best contractor that I have ever worked with! Ive had the opportunity to work with several others, both at my homes and at my businesses. A few contractors have been good, doing nice work for a fair price, but they were either too slow, too unreliable, or just couldn’t come up with creative ways to do things that were needed. Glenn completely remodeled a new salon for me, and built a custom color bar shelf, front desk, reclaimed beam stylist counter, and retail shelves. He worked with my budget, helping me make decisions based on the priorities, and was extremely friendly, professional, and reliable every step of the way. He went above and beyond, even facetiming with me or communicating with my husband when I was under the weather and couldn’t make it to the job site. I highly recommend him for any project, and will be using his services for every future project that I have, both in business and my home.

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to share my success story with you, I hired STP and Home Decor to hang drywall in my unfinished basement the I had another contractor begin. Unbenonced to me at the time the previous contractors work was less then commendable. Joseph and his crew came into my home treated me with dignity and respect corrected the other contractors mistakes and gave me an awesome price. Now that my drywall is hung I have hired them to comple the painting and put down my new floor I'm sure it will be spectacular. I look forward to sharing the total transformation of my new living area with you thanks to Joseph of STP and Home Decor

General Moore Contractors did a variety of jobs for me. Put up a new fence, power washed the house, replaced broken cement, power washed the cement and cleared and trimmed branches. He was very reasonable and professional. The job was done on time and he provided pictures of the completed work.

Not only did I receive a quote quickly, but all the responses to my questions came fast as well. At the end of the job, the last step requires you to go back through the following 7 steps to add something optional that would improve the integrity of my gazebo. Without hesitation, he went back all 7 steps and did the job to perfection. Many contractors would have thrown away the parts, collected their money and left. Not here! I will recommend to Family and friends and hope I can find another project to leverage them. Thanks again!

I am so glad I hired Dave to do my kitchen cabinets and counter top. I have an older home, and a dated kitchen that needed updating. Dave knew when we interviewed him exactly what we needed. I interviewed 4 other contractors and they were driving me crazy with having to get my own, electrician, plumber, sheet rocker, cabinets, sink, everything. Dave has all his own people he likes to work with, and we only had to pick out tile for the backsplash, and the counter top. He even took care of getting the cabinets after bring over a few samples, that we were able to pick from. Being it's an older house, he did run into some problems, and had to do some extra work, which we were totally prepared for. It has happened before. But Dave handled it professionally and quickly, never getting mad that it was going to take some extra time. Dave worked on our kitchen as if it was his own. His attention to detail is amazing, and everything is done right the first time. I would hire Dave again in a minute for anything else I need done. I'm glad I found him on Thumbtack.

First really professional contractor that I've used in many years. The fact that I have no complaints, speaks volumes as to their work ethic. I hired them to restore my home after it suffered water damage and the house looks brand new. Great company!

We were in a panic, time crunch, kitchen window sash tipped out & shattered in our shore house w/renters arriving in just a few days. Window replacement companies quoted $1000 & a month turn around time. Plus, no one wants the job of replacing just ONE window. We placed a request through Thumbtack Thursday mid afternoon, John from New Vision Builders called w/in 1/2 hr, he came to Ocean City late afternoon, took measurements, found a window THAT NIGHT & was back the next day! He did a beautiful job putting the window in, so clean, & never once acted like it was a big deal to get this job done in time for our renters to take posession by Monday. Our house is over 100 years old, so the window size was odd, he had to frame out in a concrete block structure & was completely efficient & on task the entire tire. We will, absolutely, use New Vision Builders again & recommend them to anyone in the Southern Jersey Shore & up in Medford areas.

This company is reliable, professional, punctual and considerate. I had a last-minute job and they worked with me. Mozark was willing to start right away and did a wonderful job. I spoke to a few other contractors before I decided to hire Mozak Constructions, those other contractors tried to take advantage of my crunch time and overcharge but NOT Mozark. Mozark was conscientious and was willing to work with my schedule and provided me a quote that was honest. I appreciate this company for coming to my rescue and doing a wonderful job. If you want a professional, honest and reliable company this is the company to hire. I will forever recommend Mozark Construction – honest, skillful and professional.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
