Introduction: My work as an editor goes beyond attending to grammatical correctness or basic rules of style. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of my own academic work, I have been especially helpful for writers whose work is very discipline-specific, and even jargon laden. For work in the humanities, my ability to grasp what is at stake in the subject matter has enabled me to improve the writing in ways that simple proofreading could never achieve. My work as an English tutor is, likewise, unique because of the interdisciplinary nature of my work. My love for reading and writing grew from finding things that I was passionate about (in my case, theological studies). I help students find their passions, and then challenge them to master a difficult text, or to write a compelling essay. I avoid rote memorization whenever possible. Students I have helped are prepared not only for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, but are better equipped for continuing education and professional work (not to mention personal enrichment and a more exciting intellectual life!) I love the life of the mind. Writing well and reading competently are necessary for a thriving intellectual, academic, and professional life. I love it when I see how a person discovers how well they can write and how penetratingly they can read. I also love learning from the works I edit and the students I teach.

Matthew Burdette has edited several of my academic essays in the humanities and I know that I will return to him again for help. With an attentive grasp on the content, he can show me how to be more clear and concise without threatening my authorial voice. A good editor is one who is able to ask the right questions to get the writer to understand his or her own writing better. Burdette is that kind of editor. His own proficiency in writing (ranging from academic publications to short fiction) gives him the expertise to help make me a better writer.

Over the past 12 months, Matthew has undertaken a number of editing tasks for me: from academic presentation and papers to professional application documents. These have been unfailingly excellent. Matthew has helped me a great deal with clarity and flow, as well as tightening up the basics of good writing.I would recommend him highly as an editor and tutor. Moreover, I have found his own writing to be consistently lucid and of a high standard. Again, if you're after clear and intelligent communication of ideas, I am glad to recommend Matthew for more creative tasks.

Matthew Burdette embodied the required skills to found, manage and direct a team of editors for the Journal of Theology in Practice. His editorial skills are unsurpassed: judgment and master of language.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge $35/hour for both editing and tutoring. For editing, on average it takes about one hour for 2500-3000 words. This will vary, depending on the particular editorial work needed.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

For writing and editing, I most commonly help academics with articles, book chapters, dissertations and theses, conference papers, and application essays. For tutoring, I generally help high school students approaching graduation who will be applying to colleges and taking standardized tests.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

I often find that people are afraid of writing, and are similarly afraid of reading a challenging text--supposing that they lack the ability to communicate well, or to comprehend what some dead smart person wrote. I wish people knew that these fears say nothing about reality. Anyone with something to say can find an effective way to say it. And anyone who is willing to be patient and attentive can understand anyone from Plato to Sophocles to Zizek to James Joyce.
