He was very diligent in getting the work done and he worked hard. He put kills primer over all of the walls that either had some wall paper or glue residue. Then he also skim coated those walls about 2 to 3 times to make sure the walls were even and then sanded them down. He also was kind enough to fix some holes and cracks that were in our ceiling.

Pierre did a an extremely professional and thorough job of completely remodeling our cottage bathroom. This involved replacing everything down to the wall studs - installing the insulation, new dry wall, wiring, tiling walls and floor, putting in new bath tub, building a cabinet and sink stand from scratch, redoing a closet, putting in a new door, connecting the plumbing and installing all fittings, mirror, towel racks ... the works. Pierre did all of the purchasing of materials, she worked closely with us on finding the tiles and colors we liked and worked on the place while we were overseas. The new bathroom looks gorgeous and gives some class to the cottage. My wife and I found Pierre to be an all round builder, carpenter, re-modeler with a thorough knowledge of codes and proper procedures. Plus she has good taste. Pierre is totally trustworthy and easy to work with, very relaxed working with a range of people across different culture and we would strongly recommend her - you won't regret it.

Chris from Szar builders was great. Arrived on time with what looked like some pretty nifty tools (I'm in to gadgets). He installed a galley kitchen for us with no issues. He also builds custom furniture, will be getting a buffet cabinet for the dining room, can't wait for that. Highly recommend him!!

Most money for the value. I received three quotes through Thumbtack and the difference was surprising in both what was advised and cost. Lily and her team was the most knowledgeable and discussed the job in detail which I was very grateful for.Quote was broken down by materials required and labour. It was also the most competitive!! They were punctual, diligent, and tidy throughout the project, and an extremely nice too! The quality of work is undeniable and I am extremely happy with the wall he built and the weather pointing looks amazing. If you are looking for a contractor for a quote, it was the best decision I made!

Eco Design built a retaining wall around half of our in-ground pool. Excellent communications before work commenced; we knew exactly what to expect and how much everything would cost. Steve is very responsive in answering any questions. We are beyond pleased with the work he did - the project was completed in ONE DAY and the work is flawless. I would definitely use him again and highly recommend his work.

Jesús is definitely an artistic "visionary" contractor. He has excellent ideas and we loved the masonry work his company did. I admire the workmanship of his team (especially William's diligence and dedication to making each stone work beautifully for our flagstone front porch, steps, and walkway). His attention to detail was superb and I have zero complaints regarding the stonework. His work is as flawless as it gets! They even set up a tarped tent when it was pouring rain when they still needed to cut individual stones. That's dedication! They had to remove the old woodwork, repair the crumbling foundation of our steps and redo the steps with flagstone and completed the walkway to match. (I'll add before/during/after pictures) Jesús worked very hard to accommodate our budget and presented us with our options. I won't remove a star, but with the carpenter who came along later, Herman (who was subcontracted separately by Jesus to do the posts and rails)- we had some minor issues with his woodwork. They are likely unnoticeable to others, and although the work will still stand the test of time, it did not quite compare with the attention to detail that Jesús' masonry guys showed. Jesús came to see the "issues" after and offered various solutions for the flaws we noticed. Since we have to wait to paint anyway, Jesús offered to return and do the touch ups himself before we paint. I do appreciate that commitment, I just would have preferred not to have anyone do touch ups after a "professional carpenter" does his work. Overall though, I would still recommend Blessed Forever and already have. Our front entrance looks so much better and I'm happy that they were able to work with us. I was very, very particular, but Jesús did not mind and had a good sense of humor about it. He was willing to listen to my ideas and explained what would or would not be doable. Other contractors tried to talk me into demolishing and using pavers rather than stones for the risers or suggested concrete steps and stone veneer to keep it simple, but I wanted to retain the natural stone look that matches my house better with the existing chimney and wall. I was told I couldn't get an exact match, but I think Jesús and his guys did exactly that! Everything looks original to the house, but more beautiful. I appreciate that Jesús took that into consideration and understood the overall look we were going for as well as future plans we have. Now, I've definitely rambled long enough, but the Blessed Forever team deserves a thorough review. Give them a call! I think anyone would be happy to work with them.

D&N put in paver stones in a portion of my yard and repaired my front steps which were cracked and falling. The delivery of the materials took a bit longer than expected, so that delayed the start of the project. When they did start, they worked quickly. The back yard came out nice and I now have a nice area where we can hang out and my front steps are not a hazard and are fixed. They also put in a new retaining wall and steps to lead down to the new area of the yard. The overall quality of the work was good and I was very impressed on how they were able to level out the area to put in the new pave stones. What could have gone better....They didn't totally finish the job when promised. They started the work on Friday and were suppose to finish on Sunday, they did not complete the work totally on Sunday, they left a few things undone, and it took them a whole week to come back and finish with what I thought was the most important part of the job, the sealing of the paver stones, so it rained very heavily that week and that was a disappointment for me. BUT they did come back and finished the job, a week later. Also, they did not take the debris that was left over from the tearing out of the remaining deck steps and wall, I had a bit of deck wood that I needed to dispose of my self, so next time I'll just make sure that I make that clear in my initial request and make sure that it is in the contract. All in all, the quality of the actual work was very good, Dhimitri was very polite, professional and works with you according to your budget. D&N knows what they are doing, their work is very good, just be sure to make all your requests upfront and that all your expectations are clear and spelled out in your contract so that you have no surprises. In D&N's eagerness to please, they sometimes over promise and this makes them look like they under deliver. Will I use them again in the future, Yes. Do I recommend you call D&N, YES. Emilio and his dad and their crew work very hard and produce quality workmanship. They were thorough with their clean up at the completion of their day and at the end of the project. They began the repairs to the 2 separate areas, retaining wall/patio project, on time as promised and communicated with me every step of the way even making suggestions which we had not thought about . My project was completed as promised on time and I am extremely happy with choosing American Eagle. Will hire them again in the future.

We contacted Pete to demolish our existing deck, rebuild a supporting retaining wall and expand the layout of the deck. From the moment that we met Pete, he was a consummate professional, bringing computer images of our project, prior research about necessary permits and restrictions and ideas about different options for us to consider. He was organized with the paperwork, followed up with the town and kept us in the loop about progress that was made. Throughout our experience, he sent photo updates and always responded quickly to questions or concerns. It was evident that he took pride in his work and wanted us to be 100% satisfied with the finished project. The structure is absolutely beautiful, safe and exactly what we wanted and really adds a lot to our home. The job stayed completely on budget and was close to on time. We will definitely call him the next time we need work done.

Everything worked out great. Tommy called back the same day "I think it was Sunday". He built a wall and installed an interior door along with a cat door. We scheduled things for the next week and he was done in a couple of days. Great local guy. Very honest and helpful. I definately recommend and will be calling again. Thanks Tommy!

I have used the Suburban Home Improvement for the last 3 years for small and large repairs around my home. Most recently, they were here in the fall putting in a retaining wall that turned out better than I expected. I don't call anyone else for repairs because I trust Suburban to get it right the first time. They're always very friendly and accomodating. I recommend them to everyone.

I recently hired Am Staff Contracting, Inc.to work on my front and back steps and I am grateful that I did! The back steps had to be repaired after a car hit and knocked off the corner of the porch. Am Staff had to remove the existing railing and remodeled the design of the porch, They applied new stucco and filled in driveway material. They also had to re-set stones on porch due to ice damage. The outcome is far better than the original. I was so pleased with the job that I asked them to repair my front steps. Again, the result is so good that I am receiving complements and inquiries as to who did the job. The steps were taken down, rebuilt, made wider and faced with new stone to match the retaining wall in front of my house which dates to the 1920's. The wider steps make entry easier and look much better. Am Staff also replaced the stone on the walkway and at driveway level. They are an excellent design resource. They are kind, patient and friendly; working early each day through the July heat wave this summer. They ask for nothing and would not even let me buy them lunch as they come fully prepared. The work was completed in a timely manner and clean-up was good every day. I would definitely use them again.

We completed a stone patio, including excavation, concrete slab, and purchasing/ setting the flagstones. We also established retaining walls and drainage along with flagstone paths on existing hilly grades. Frank's response was knowledgeable and facilitative combining labor and materials to achieve a timely and minimum change order job. Frank came back for agreed punchlist and sealing after Winter and after final payment. He has my best recommendation.

I have to start by saying that Kenneth is a remarkable young man, he is amiable, hard working, courteous and extremely professional. Like his profile says, no job is too hard, his work is truly wonderful and I am a very happy customer. I have 2 teenagers, 2 dogs and I work 2 jobs, I got behind in the upkeep of my home I didn't know where to start. Kenneth got to work immediately, spraying, washing, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping and mopping. He paid attention to detail and didn't stop until he was finished, he is without a doubt very knowledgeable in what he does and impressed me with his hard work and end result. Like his profile also shows, this talented young man does much more than clean. I highly recommend Kenneth and am so happy to have found him on Thumbtack he's coming back next week to do repairs in my home and I know I'll hire him again and again.

Anthony Chee did a remodel of our bathroom. We had a whirlpool tub installed. He and his team installed new plumbing, new walls with new tiles, shower head, all new fixtures and medicine cabinet. We had plumbing work updated. Anthony Chee conducts himself professionally and it was apparent that he always put the needs of the client first. He has a good eye for design and was very helpful with ideas to give us the bathroom we wanted. He was constantly in touch with us giving us the plans for the following day. Without fail, the project progressed quickly and efficiently. He has an impressive work ethic that came across in the project that he completed for us. Everyone on his team did quality work and were always professional and pleasant to deal with. It was a good experience having the work done by Anthony Chee and his team. It was a pleasure dealing with someone who is reliable and takes pride in their work. I would highly recommend Anthony Chee and would definitely use his services again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
