He showed up as scheduled, did a nice job caulking the tub. Left a minor mess, but it's a small NYC bathroom and I cleaned it up in a couple of minutes. I'd hire them again.

Start to finish Pavol was very professional and detail oriented. The job consisted of painting 5 doors and a small bathroom that had a tremendous amount of cutting, was done in a semi gloss canari yellow and in need of a serious make over. The guys from Art Olsavsky were on it. I could tell from the beginning that i had nothing to worry about. They taped everything off and where extremely patient and took every step possible to do the job properly. It was a fulls day worth of work and when done everything was left cleaned and the end result was simply amazing. The guys primed the doors and painted them and did two coats on the bath ceiling and walls. Already planning on hiring them back to do my living room and my man cave which is in need of some serious patch work and painting. Would highly recommend these guys for any painting projects.

Leonardo is outstanding! He is an artisan with many talents. He did a beautiful job repairing my coffee table and we chatted a bit during the process. I learned he is also a millworker and lighting designer so we're now working on more projects together. He is charming, honest, and fastidious.

Replace bathroom tile, renovate bathroom, build new closet, replace kitchen sink/faucets/counter, replace radiator, install recessed lighting. Working with Ariel was a pleasure. Jacob and Joseph understood the work completely, had great advice on the design of my small Manhattan studio. They started on time every day were easy to communicate with and were fairly priced. I would def recommend them to friends and family.

I never worked with an interior designer before and I was a little nervous but When I realized how professional and capable she was I started to relax. I love what we did together and the job amazingly stayed within my budget. I really love the way it came out. It feels new, fresh and organized. Arati is very organized, friendly, EXCEPTIONALLY talented, and highly professional. She works very close with you to find the right touch that works for you and understand your needs. Even after finishing all her responsibilities for my condo she stayed available for and responded promptly to any questions I had. I would highly recommend working with her!

Highly recommend! My husband and I engaged Homeesque after relocating to our new home in Florida. We have worked with designers in the past and really wanted to find someone who would help us bring our style and taste to life in our new place, without breaking the bank. Carol and Diane were AMAZING!!! They invested the time to meet with us and really understand our style and budget before presenting us with several equally stunning design platforms to choose from. Their flair for design was so incredible that it was hard to choose just one! Carol and Diane helped us with everything from choosing our color palette, to furniture selection and placement, lighting, and accessories. We are thrilled with the results AND their pricing was the absolute best (I know, I checked!) Many designers claim to be focused on the customer, but these two ladies are the real deal. Every phone call and email was answered promptly, deadlines were always met, and they kept us informed through every stage from selection to ordering to delivery. And they really went the extra mile by helping us to incorporate our some of our existing furniture and accessories into the decor to save us money in the process. Homeesque really hit the mark on product, price and professionalism! I have referred them with confidence to friends and family. You cannot go wrong with Carol and Diane.

My husband and I can say good things about working with Brigitte. We hired her for work on our living room, bedroom and dining room and she did really good work. We have such a nice place now. We tried to fix up our apartment by ourselves and didn't quite get it right. The colors didn't look good with all the original details and the furniture was very large and stuffy. So we decided to ask someone with a hopefully good eye to assist us in making a few decisions. We decided to hire Brigitte and a few things stand out when you work with her. She is very nice, professional and also accommodating. After having interviewed a few designers we felt that Brigitte was a good fit. We were able to change things around, stop a project and continue without much difficulty. She also recommended a great handyman to accurately paint all the prewar moldings. That is not easy, we tried to do it and it was painful. We also didn't feel rushed, much different from some of the other designers we talked to. The way options were presented did not feel forced. The colors and furniture selection was very much our style and went great with the prewar details in our apartment. It is more subtle, the other designers wanted to talk us into being more bold to make the place more traditional with burgundy for the living room and blue for the dining room. We like prewar details and a lighter feeling and with Brigittes help chose a taupe that's a little more modern but still looks great with off-white trim and molding. It is the same color for both rooms with a shade darker in the living room to make it more cozy. We are very happy with the work and can recommend Brigitte to anyone in need of sprucing up their home.

I met Ms. Smith about ten years ago. She is one of the best and baddest designers I have ever known. The way her mind operates and she creates has her in a league of her own. New York should been happy to have this powerhouse as a force to embrace because she left her designer mark in 100's of house and business in Atlanta. Happy to know that it is only a 2 hour flight back to the ATL because we also have more work for her. KUDOS

I'm a fellow interior designer and Ivan, of Peacock Home & Garden Designs, helped me install a holiday window display at the Summit Rug showroom. It was sush a pleasure to work with him. He treated my project as though it were his own, he went above and beyond the call of duty in numerous ways, and his contractor skills came in handy with the --physics-- of the installation. We had to suspend the chairs in mid air, and the ideas he brought to the table left me confident that the chairs would successfully ski down the rug hill. My overall experience was that I had worked with Ivan dozens of times before. But, it was our first time working together. Definately will not be the last.

Hinda's professionalism and creativity really helped my projects along. I always thought that interior designers were meant for large and expensive renovations. Hinda showed me how valuable using a designer can be for smaller projects as well. She saved me hundreds of dollars on upholstery fabric and gave me new perspective on the set up of my living room. Hinda was also very helpful in a bathroom renovation. Highly recommended!

If you are ever looking for a company that you can trust to provide you with a quality home remodel, choose Jevon O'Neal and Dynamic Home Creations. Jevon O'Neal and his crew at Dynamic Home Creations remodeled my one and only bathroom. They took it from "The Pit" (it was really bad from years of neglect by my home's previous owners ) to its new name, "The Palace." Jevon O'Neal continually came up with ideas and suggestions to make the remodeling plan even better. He and his crew worked quickly, efficiently, and professionally. And, most important, Dynamic Home Creations does excellent work! I am thrilled with the finished room. One final note: while they were gutting and then rebuilding the room, they were respectful of my home and me. Everything was cleaned at the end of every day (within reason); paper was put down to protect my 100-year-old hardwood floors every morning, and so on. This is important to know if you have never lived through a home remodeling job.

BHome is the best. We have worked with them on several projects in different houses and their work is perfect. They have a great way of understanding the look you are describing and making that come to life in a way better than you could have imagined. It is a very collaborative process where you share your ideas, vision and budget and they bring their best ideas, vision and budget until you decide exactly what it is you really want. They do a great job of designing something that makes your house your home and not just a nice stylized room by a designer. They are great with space planning and seeing the true potential that exists if you just have a little imagination and trust Bhome to do what they do best! We have used them several times and will continue to do so and would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a top designer for your home. NLB 10/26/2015

There is no job too big or too small for Henry and his team. They did a great job on my front door, and saved me money on the project. He did such a great job that I hired him to renovate my master bathroom, introducing a double vanity and installing medicine cabinets throughout the house. He also installed new flooring in my foyer, and performed carpentry throughout the house on wooden counters and molding. Henry also solved a plumbing problem after a plumber i had hired failed to do so, and also performed follow up remediation on the carpet that had been affected. I will definitely be calling Henry first for my next construction project.

Mark is a very talented and thoughtful architect. He designed my beautiful new kitchen and bathroom to meet my modern sense of style and my limited budget. He provided very creative solutions on how to maximize space in my kitchen without the expense of moving the plumbing locations. He is also very knowledgeable about COOP buildings and dealing with contractors. I would highly recommend Mark for any apartment renovation project.

Sophie went above and beyond designing and keeping the many contractors in line with our home in the Hamptons (NY). We couldn't be happier with her design and the end result as she always took into consideration our requests as well as our budget. This project scope included updating and adding four bedrooms and new bathrooms, as well as the exterior of the house with all new windows. We couldn't have done it without her.

Had a kitchenette project for a very small space, designer and contractor worked together from A-Z to make this as easy as possible for me, as I’m not even in the state where the work is being done. Great finished product and they worked well within my budget. Unfortunately, the work took longer than anticipated due to faulty supplies ordered and some other hiccups along the way but overall I am very happy with the outcome. I’d suggest this co. communicate more with the customer throughout the project, especially if/when the time quoted changes or anything significant like that. Thanks again!

Last summer my husband and I hired 3sixty Design to design a bedroom for our 10-year-old daughter. 3sixty Design provided invaluable design services in regard to optimal use of limited space, color schemes, furniture selection, flooring, draperies and accessories. We are thrilled with the results. Everyone who has seen the new room are in awe of the transformation from a little girls’ room to a fun space more fitting of a “tween.” It was a pleasure to work with 3sixty Design because they really listen to the client and work hard to understand the needs of the client. And, as you can imagine, 10-year-olds can prove to be challenging clients. 3sixty Design met the quirky challenges that our daughter presented, including a 60’s-style bead curtain and a shag carpet, with patience and style. In terms of a budget for the project, 3sixty Design respected our budget and always looked for good value when making product recommendations. 3sixty Design provides an excellent product to clients in time management, presentation, and communication on the project. 3sixty Design can execute a beautiful design while working within a budget. I strongly recommend 3sixty Design for any residential interior design project.

We hired Furini Architects to renovate our 2 family house in Brooklyn NY. Alex was there to help us through the process from start to finish. He is very knowledgeable, responsive and worked with our budget in mind to design a final product which we are very pleased with. We would definitely hire him again and would recommend his services as an Architect to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
