About
I am a full-time professional tutor with over a decade of experience. I also have instructors who work with me who are professional teachers and tutors. My teachers and I keep the lessons fun and engaging. I personally hire all of my instructors. We are a small company with an excellent track record. We have a unique curriculum that is a mix of old and new teaching methods. My business has been chosen as the "Best of Thumbtack" several times.
We have coached students to perfect scores on the SAT and ACT. Our students have raised their scores as much as 500 points on the SAT. On the ACT, we have helped students increase their scores as much as 10 points in a single section. Our students have been accepted to every Ivy League University.
I enjoy the relationships we develop with families. I particularly enjoy the sense of accomplishment that I get when students achieve their academic and personal goals. There is nothing I like better than hearing that one of our students has been accepted to his or her top choice school. We work hard to help the majority of our students achieve this.

My daughter had the privilege of working with James on her ACT prep these past two months. My daughter who is very bright but struggles with focus and lack of confidence clicked nicely with James. He was extremely timely and easy to schedule with. Our daughter found his sessions to be very engaging and helpful not only with her ACT prep, but also with her regular studies. My daughter set an ACT goal for herself and was extremely surprised and thrilled that she scored beyond her goal. We highly recommend James as an ACT prep tutor!

I'm very proud of the work your daughter accomplished. It's always exciting when a student scores even higher than she expected.

We couldn’t be more pleased! My daughter needed 2 more points on her ACT to get into the honors college. I googled ACT instructors and received many emails. James’s email was very professional and he responded back very quickly. We live in Iowa and James lives in New York. All classes with my daughter were done online using FaceTime. James never billed without asking first. If you’re looking for an ACT/SAT instructor, I would highly recommend James. We found out this morning, 12/19/2017, when test results were posted, that my daughter actually went up 3 points and made it into honors college. This saved us literally thousands of dollars. Thank you, Janelle

James was the perfect fit for our teenager, for both ACT tutoring and college application/essay coaching. Not only did the ACT scores in question jump 5 points to a high score, but he had a pragmatic and helpful approach to the college process that was very well received. He had a positive outlook and cultivated confidence in our son, who had been a little nervous about the application process. James came to our house and was always polite, professional and on time. So far we've had all positive decisions from colleges and are so grateful!

Our daughter worked with James directly for several months prior to taking the June ACT and as a result of the lessons including one-on-one sessions and follow-up work, her score jumped 10 points! I highly recommend James and his team!!!!

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Please contact us for pricing details. The rate is based on many factors including location, subject, in-person vs. internet lessons, etc.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Most parents first call or email to discuss the type of help the students needs. Based on this conversation and instructor availability, I send the parent a bio of a teacher who I think would be a good fit. The parent and teacher arrange a time that is mutually convenient to meet for lessons. Most students meet once or twice a week.
At the first lesson, we like to meet with both the student and the parents (if possible) to discuss goals and the tutoring process. For ACT/SAT preparation, we introduce the student to the test, take a look at results from any past tests he or she has taken, and together, we figure out where improvements can be made. Each student is unique, so we try to address the student's personal concerns about the test or subject he or she needs help with. We work from there to achieve the desired results.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I had top scores when I took the ACT and SAT, including perfect scores on the SAT II Math II subject test, the ACT math section, and the ACT science section. I went through the test preparation process myself and understand the stress that students are often experiencing related to standardized tests. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in writing. I was mentored by some of the best writers in Los Angeles, including Academy Award nominee Leonard Schrader. This background has given me a unique way of approaching standardized tests, writing, and the college application essay. I share this perspective with my students and also with my instructors. I trained with many different tutoring companies over the years before I started my own business. I also have instructors who have expertise in many other subjects. Some are science experts who teach chemistry and physics, some are reading specialists who work with elementary students, and some are certified teachers. My instructors and I continue to develop new methods and tools to give our students.
