Prompt response to my request. Came on time. On a Sunday no less. Day after I called. Had all proper tools. Got right to work. Did great job. No muss no fuss. Pleasant professional. Would hire again. Had bad experience with another online Handyman finder last December so was a little worried but needed a.c. installed. Very glad I called

Great handyman! Mr. Baptiste responded to my Thumbtack request very quickly (and was available for the job the same day!), was pleasant to talk to while he was working, and didn't charge me extra even though the lock change he did for me wound up being slightly more difficult than I'd anticipated. I will definitely be in touch with him for future projects.

If you need a handyman, you have to hire him. He is so polite and gets the job done. We were missing screws from one of our beds (it was the fault of the movers). Can you believe Pierre ordered the screws and came back a week later to put the bed together?

Jorge changed out a light fixture in our dining room. He always stayed in contact before the job and he showed up on time, worked quickly and cleanly and was very friendly. We especially appreciated that he was able to come on a Saturday. I would definitely recommend him for handyman projects.

Kenny was great! He helped my fix my tv and got here within 15 min- (first picture) is Best Buy’s geek squad set up...it wasn’t centered with my furniture and wayyyyy too high. Kenny came in and fixed it for a great price. (Second pic) It’s at the perfect height and centered with my family room furniture now. Going to use him for any other handyman work needed.

Extremely collaborative and professional with great attention to detail. Also has an artistic eye so he's much more than a typical handyman. I had previously hired an interior decorator who sketched out a photo gallery with 2 rows of 8 frames. It turns out she measured incorrectly, and Abe was able to suggest something that was much better. Abe worked efficiently - much faster than I expected or was quoted by multiple people. He even offered to go to a specialty store to get the right hardware ahead of the job. I found the rate to be reasonable, and I'm really happy with the job. Plus, he's a very pleasant person. Will definitely use again.

My partner and I just moved to NJ from NC and had quite a bit of repairs and upgrades we needed to complete on the new home we purchased. One such upgrade was venting the dryer. This home was built in 1892 so needless to say, the original architectural plan did not include a dryer. The previous owners installed a gas line - but where the gas line had to run to attach to the kitchen stove, made for a really poor location in the basement in regards to venting the dryer. Before Nick came, he let me know a price for a best case scenario, which I appreciated because had he named a price over my budget, it would have given us both the opportunity to cancel the estimate so as not to waste time. Nick arrived on-time for the estimate and at first it was pretty tricky to find a solution for venting the dryer without completely tearing up the ceiling and walls. Nick was persistent in finding though and was able to devise a plan of going through an old nonfunctional window that was hidden and covered. I hired him to complete the dryer venting and also uncap the gas line and install a hose in preparation for the dryer installation. On the day of the project, Nick arrived on time (7:30am on a Saturday) It took him about 2.5 hours to complete everything. He did a fantastic job. One strength I want to highlight is that Nick not only gets the job done, and does it well, but also takes pride in the aesthetics of his work. He could have easily vented the dryer in a way that exposed the pipe all the way along the ceiling and through the window, but instead he figured out a way to fish it under the sheet rock for a cleaner look. He also cleaned his work space completely - which I have found to be rare for contractors in this area. I have had many contractors who were ready to walk out the door without cleaning up their mess and would have done so had I not asked them to clean up before they go. I also want to highlight that I had a sewage pipe issue in the basement prior to his dryer venting project. Nick also does plumbing so I called him at 4pm and he was at my house by 8pm. People who who have hired folks for sewage pipe leaks know that cleaning up the sewage is not part of the job. Nick was willing to clean and sanitize on top of snaking the pipes and clearing them of clogs for a reasonable price. Nick has been great to work with and does great work. I have already hired him to take care of some other projects around the house (installing a shower door, clearing debris in the backyard). Glad we found a go-to handyman for our new home!

This guy is the best. He saved me from a bad installation of my murphy bed (handy.com) The collapsed and could have seriously injured me. I was actually traumatized by that prior experience. Gino listened to my concerns and did the job right. He came back and built the additional console units. He spent the time to complete everything perfectly. He is a handyman you can trust for any project. He's very reasonable and trustworthy. I have other projects in mind and this is the only person I'll be using. You'll want him coming back for more projects too once you see the quality of his work.

I cannot say enough good things about Anthony. He went above and beyond the call of duty to help me resolve an issue with a broken Air Conditioner while I was out of the country and had airbnb guests. If it were not for him, I could not have resolved the issue. The quality of his work was exceptional and I know from firsthand experience as I have at times worked as a Handyman myself. Hire Anthony without hesitation.

Roman was very responsive and knowledgeable. He came and fixed my boiler with no issues. His partner Eddy was very handy and courteous as well. Roman reached out to me within minutes of searching for a handyman to fix my boiler. He took me to Home Depot close by in the neighborhood without charge. They were affordable for the time allotted. Fixed my boiler within an hour. Very quick and efficient. If I have any issues I will definately contact them ASAP. Reliability and efficiency are top criteria's for providing the best customer service. With that being said I would highly recommend their service to anyone who needs it. Be realistic about your budget because owning a home is not cheap. Do your research and happy findings :-)

This guy is great. Excellent craftsmanship. He does more than you request if he sees a problem if you had not predicted or forseen. Block out a considerable amount of time because you can expect that he will take as much time as is necessary to get the job done. His Rates are very reasonable. In fact, when you see the quality of his work you would be inclined to give him more than what he asked. I did. I totally recommend this man. If you ever need a plumber call him first. Note: this is not som hype; Iam a true satisfied customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
