I have an older house and none of the bedroom doors closed properly. After getting a quote, we hired Walter and he started work two days later. He was very professional and fixed every door perfectly. We will hire him for future projects around our house. I highly recommend him for any carpentry projects you have at your house.

Greivin is a very reliable, honest and responsive contractor who did a great job at repainting our house. I offered him the job after he submitted the best bid among 4 contractors to paint my 1340 sq feet house in Hoboken. My walls were painted in dark colors with different rooms having different colors and we were shifting to all white - he did a great job that needed four coats and also agreed to repair our wooden floor in a small corner for no extra cost. He has done a great and timely job - in a condo building, he did the job with no disturbance to neighbors. Highly recommended.

When I began my search for a professional who did carpentry there were two crucial things that I was looking for. The first was someone who had photos of their professional work and reviews from previous customers. After receiving three responses for my project Kezo Maintenance Management (Jim) stood out as he met those criteria’s. Jim initially installed two slab doors, one for a bedroom and the other for my bathroom. Jim did a great job and based on that I inquired if he was able to work on other projects that I needed throughout my apartment. Jim was able to give great feedback on all of the materials that I needed for the next project. Furthermore all of his suggestions was tailored to the needs of my apartment space and color schemes. Some of the things that Jim worked on was installing a vanity, medicine cabinet, towel rack, and shower rod in my bathroom. In addition to installing sliding doors for my hallway closet and another slab door for another closet. For my kitchen Jim installed my new faucet, and wall tiles. Jim was extremely professional and on time each day. I would most definitely hire Jim in the future for future home improvement projects.

Had a great experience with Vali putting up two shelves for me. He replied to my request quickly and really worked with me to get the right pricing. He was on time and super efficient. Finished the job quickly and beautifully. Now I have two wonderful shelves up in my apartment that really make a difference for a small space. I definitely recommend Vali for any general carpentry job.

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

I met with Pierre from Handy Ma'am, the moment she (YES SHE) walked through my door she radiates good vibes and you can tell she is genuinely a good person. She listened tentatively as I pointed out the repairs I need to have done and gave positive feedback; when she detected I was confused by her description of what needed to be done she explained it to me in layman's terms. Their slogan is that they "Pride themselves in being a diverse business" and "Anything HE can do, WE can do...Also" and with that being said I gave her my list... fix ceilings, replace my light fixtures, replace cabinets, restore my stairs ( I own a Brownstone) Pierre took pride in saying "I do the carpentry herself", replace the faucet in my kitchen, paint my bathroom, redo my vestibule and the list goes on. Just think, I feel this way and they haven't started working yet, so stay tuned for part 2.

Glenn built a beautiful deck for our family. The wood is Ipe and Cedar, difficult material to work with, but Glenn knew what he was doing. A real pro. He takes his work very seriously and always asked us for our opinions before doing something. He was totally great about making sure we were happy with the final results and made any change we requested. He also showed up every day and early to get a head start on the work and finished on time. I would hire Glenn again to do any other carpentry or home project I have.

Excellent service. Gary installed a motion detection outdoor garage light for me. I am very pleased with the job. He also does carpentry and I showed him a few odd jobs around the house that I would like done in the future. He said that as soon as I am ready just let him know. Based on this first experience, you can be suret that that I would be calling on him many more times in the future. He is friendly, calm, polite and made me feel very comfortable and safe in his presence. I will gladly recommend him to anyone and feel very comfortable doing so.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
