Introduction: I am a private tutor of grades kindergarten through high school in Reading and Writing and for kindergarten through 6th in Math. I help students meet their goals for the Common Core Standards and SAT writing. I also help ESL students with conversation, reading and writing skills and work with college students and business people on research and papers. I love helping my students to develop a sense of their own worth and independent judgment.
With a bachelors degree from Yale University, my previous work experience includes work in a charter school where I helped elementary-level students to improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Additionally, I helped them to sharpen their math skills, including addition, subtraction, and fractions and with applied mathematical concepts, such as symbols, telling time, and making change.
I have also spent over 20 years with a large life insurance company where I was an educator, writer, and editor in various departments, including customer service and advertising compliance. My work for the company always involved writing clear and concise communications as well as explaining complex financial products and multifaceted procedures to clients and staff.
I go about my work gently, with lots of patience, sympathy, and a sense of humor, and I believe these are the reasons I am able to see improvements in my students. I like to use materials with engaging exercises to help students remember what they are reading, writing, etc. and to involve them in conversations, so that they can be encouraged to use correct English. I like to ask questions to make sure that a student has grasped the material.
You will find me to be communicative, warm, and attentive to details, quick to ascertain where you need help, but not judgmental, and you will feel comfortable with me easily. I will help bring out the best in you, but you will not feel unnecessarily pushed.
