About

Toni-Ann Accardi, LMT, is a massage and bodywork therapist licensed in New Jersey (license number 18KT00603400) and New York (license number 028434). Toni-Ann completed the extended professional massage therapy program with academic excellence at Cortiva-Hoboken. She is also certified in prenatal massage therapy. Her passion is to help people obtain overall health and well-being of body and mind through therapeutic massage. Each massage is customized to meet your therapeutic goals utilizing a combination of the following massage modalities and techniques to achieve the maximum benefit: SWEDISH Swedish massage is generally used to relax and energize. Various techniques, including long gliding strokes, applying circular pressure with hands and palms and firm kneading are used to relax muscles and increase the oxygen flow in the blood. Lotion or oil is used to reduce friction. DEEP TISSUE Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage, but with deeper pressure to affect the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia. These techniques require advanced training and a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology. The muscles must be relaxed in order to effectively perform deep tissue massage; otherwise, tight surface muscles prevent the practitioner from reaching deeper musculature. It helps with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation and reduces inflammation-related pain. MYOFASCIAL RELEASE Myofascial release is an application of sustained pressure and movement into the fascial system in order to eliminate fascial restrictions. Trauma, inflammatory response and surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions. Myofascial release is an effective therapeutic approach that involves gentle sustained pressure without lotion or oil into the fascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE Combining some elements of sports and medical massage, orthopedic massage integrates 10 modalities to treat soft-tissue pain and injury. Emphasis is placed on understanding both the injury and its rehabilitation criteria. Three basic elements adhered to, despite the technical diversity in treatment, are assessment, matching the treatment to the injury and adaptability of treatment. SPORTS MASSAGE Designed for anyone participating in regular physical activity, sports massage enhances athletic performance and recovery and can be useful to an athlete for pre-event, post-event and injury treatment. Pre-event massage is delivered at the performance site, usually with the athlete fully clothed. Fast paced and stimulating, it helps to establish blood flow and to warm up muscles. During the massage, the athlete generally focuses on visualizing the upcoming event. Post-event massage is also delivered on-site, through the clothes. The intent here is to calm the nervous system and reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow. When an athlete sustains an injury, skillful massage therapy can often speed and improve the quality of healing while focusing on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements, specifically targeting the muscle-tendon junctions. TRIGGER POINT THERAPY A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that refers or causes sharp and intense or dull aching pain in other parts of the body. Trigger point therapy is specifically designed to release constricted areas in the muscles therefore alleviating pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. The recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort. You can experience a significant decrease in pain after just one treatment and help to naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries by receiving massage with trigger point therapy on a regular basis. NEUROMUSCULAR MASSAGE The soft-tissue manipulation of neuromuscular massage balances the body's central nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. Based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system initiates and maintains pain, the goal is to help relieve the pain and dysfunction by understanding and alleviating the underlying cause. Neuromuscular therapy can help individuals who experience distortion and biomechanical dysfunction, which is often a symptom of a deeper problem. It is also used to locate and release spasms and hypercontraction in the tissue, eliminate trigger points that cause referred pain, rebuild the strength of injured tissues, assist venous and lymphatic flow and restore postural alignment, proper biomechanics and flexibility to the tissues. PRENATAL MASSAGE Performed by a trained perinatal specialist, many methods of massage therapies are both effective and safe prenatally and during labor and postpartum periods of women's pregnancies. Prenatally, specific techniques can reduce pregnancy discomforts and concerns and enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of both mother and fetus. Skilled, appropriate touch facilitates labor, shortening labor times and easing pain and anxiety. In the postpartum period, specialized techniques re-balance structure, physiology, and emotions of the new mother and may help her to bond with and care for her infant. Specialized, advanced training in the anatomy, physiology, complications, precautions and contraindications is highly recommended and many practitioners require referrals from physicians prior to therapy. Sideline positioning with supportive, soft cushions is used to alleviate the extra strain on the lower back and pelvic areas when the pressure of massage techniques are applied. About

As a massage therapist who has worked for 10 years with various medical practitioners, physical therapists, and athletic teams, I have an extensive practical experience working with the physiologic aspects of our injuries while being able to successfully fuse the intrinsic energy that lies within our psychosomatic experiences. I believe that manual manipulation of our soft tissue (such as muscles, ligaments, fascia, and connective tissue) is a very powerful form of preventative and remedial treatment. I have had the pleasure of working within athletic training teams for college athletes, with chiropractors, cardiologists, physiotherapists, surgeons, and high-profile clientele, such as professional athletes and performers from major music acts. I have focused my specialties on sports rehab and prevention, chronic pain management, and lymphatic drainage for post-operative patients and also for people suffering from auto immune diseases. I have done both work with therapeutic care teams, as well as private, one-on-one sessions. Because I have a passion for my work, and because I believe it is important to give back, I have had the privilege to volunteer with non-profit groups, like The Hyacinth Foundation, working with auto-immune patients and Life Rolls On, working with mobility disabled children and adults due to both circumstantial and congenital issues, and I've also worked internationally with special-needs patients with brain injuries, which resulted in occupational dysfunctions or partial paralysis as is the case with aphasia, peripheral neuropathies, stroke, or fibromyalgia. My work in the field of physiotherapy facilitated my skill set dealing with chronic pain sufferers. There are many modalities to deal with persistent, ingrained soft tissue constriction. To treat chronic conditions, I specialize each massage to fit the needs of each client every time I see them. I do not believe in massage "routines"; by not relying on a routine, I can deal with the specific presentation and resolution of issues on an individual basis. By doing this, I have seen some amazing changes in people's bodies and also the quality of life! Any questions you may have about a condition, a massage, or anything related, please do not hesitate to contact me! List of massages are: - Lymphatic drainage/CDT - Shiatsu - Gua Sha - Cupping - Deep tissue - Reflexology - Athletic massage - Assisted stretching - Swedish massage - Hot stone massage - Neuromuscular therapy - Post-surgical manipulation - Myofascial release technique - Moxibustion - Pre/postnatal
