How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

Aunt Micki’s Mutt’s Pet Sitting is absolutely the only pet sitter that I would ever use! I’m typically super worried about leaving Olive with anyone but knowing that Aunt Micki is caring for her makes me feel 💯 at ease. Every Day Micki would send multiple pictures and share all of Olive’s food and walk schedules. Micki even took Olive to the local pet shop and bought her a toy that Olive is in love with! Micki is loving, caring and super knowledgeable with pup’s and I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone.

My rabbit and two birds are my children. While I was fortunate to have had neighbors and friends pet-sit in the past—this time I didn’t. I interviewed several Thumbtack pet sitters and chose Francesca, because she radiated honesty and a genuine affinity for animals; she also asked the kinds of questions that only a responsible and motivated person would. She stayed at my home for nearly a week while I was away on business. The animals were happy, she kept my apartment tidy, it couldn’t have gone better—and birds are tough customers. I recommend Francesca without hesitation. She's lovely.

Lisa was a great cat sitter for our 4 cats over the holidays. She met with me before the trip to meet the cats and review their feeding routine. She followed the feeding instructions perfectly and sent me pics every day. She also seems to love animals and enjoy spending time with them. She has always been very responsive to emails and texts. I highly recommend her for pet sitting.

She was on time and dog sat my dog for 4 hours waiting for Brenda the dog sitter who came to dog sit my dog for 2 days. Suki was cold the whole time I was there, she was always looking at her phone. She didn't ask anything about my dog, never scooped down to meet him. I had fed him and walked him. We have a backyard so she didn't have to do anything. I never saw her pet my dog. I forgot something and had to come back and still was looking at her phone and not petting or playing with him. She charges $25 per hour, so that was $100 and texted me that I owed her one more hour but not a word about my dog. My dog is very old and a recent rescue, he was a stray and has strong anxiety. I had to leave him, I couldn't take both my dogs. Brenda left her job earlier so he wouldn't be alone. Suki didn't care to leave him alone. I was so happy when Brenda came and sent me many photos of him and was so warm to him and truly cared. These old rescues need that, Suki doesn't seem to care. I would never hire her again. Brenda on the other hand is the best dog sitter I ever had. Every time I left Memphis he wouldn't eat and just waited for me but he ate with Brenda.
