Working with Nick has been such a pleasant experience! When looking for piano lessons for my child, I was worried that it would be tough to find a quality teacher in this new, virtual world. However, Nick quickly put my nerves at ease. He is both professional and engaging when working with my son. I can already see a difference in his playing after just a few short weeks of lessons. Nick knows how to be patient when teaching material that is complicated, but he also knows when to give that little extra push to bring out the best. Anyone would be lucky to have him as their teacher - no matter the age!Jan 14, 2021

Nick is both a brilliant pianist and educator. There's a joke in education and sports that "if you cannot do, you teach". In other words, Michael Jordan was a fantastic performer but would be a lousy teacher. This is not the case with Nick. He has an amazing ability to distill highly nuanced and complex ideas down into common language that I can make sense of. If you've ever heard or seen him play, you know he is a fantastic pianist as well. His talent and skill inspire me to work extremely hard to become a better pianist. I leave our lessons with a firm grasp on what I need to work on before my next lesson, as well as an action plan of what I need to do to accomplish the next goal/milestone that we've set in front of me. I highly recommend Nick as a piano teacher. You will not regret it, and investment in yourself is the best form of investment!Jan 12, 2021

Nicholaus is wonderful with children, he is engaging and fun. He is always available to speak with my kids and get them over whatever hurdle they have reached. He inspires them and tells stories about the history of music. Given that, he is serious about practice time. Even at a young age he teaches theory and technique. At any age I recommend NIck as a teacher of the art of the piano. His passion is contagious!Jan 3, 2021

The musical world is lucky to have Nick Poelwijk. Playing the piano is difficult work (especially as someone who had no experience when we began) but Nick has an ability to convey ideas and material in a way that is not only understandable but enjoyable. Piano is now a passion of mine I continue to this day, and that is in large part because of Nick's teaching.Jan 3, 2021

I feel so fortunate to have found Nick for my 12 year old son. One of the silver linings of Covid is that Nick is in NY and we are in LA. We could not ask for a better instructor. He doesn't shy away from tried and true teaching of basics and his investment creates an investment from my kid - discipline and practice while still making it understandable. It doesn't hurt that Nick is super cool and so very gifted that it's impossible not to respect him. (If you've not seen/heard him play you are missing something exceptionally special!) He is inspiring. He is also available to my questions and lays out what should be worked on with the expectation that it will, indeed, be worked on. A+ all the way. Venture to say the best teacher/coach my son has had in any endeavor.Mar 2, 2021
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? The first lesson works as an interview, both for you and myself! We will go over whatever experience you have at the piano or with music in general and talk about goals and a plan moving forward.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Currently, I am an adjunct instructor of piano studies at New York University. I have also taught piano at the University of Miami. Besides university teaching I have also held private studios on both the west and east coast. I thoroughly enjoyed working with my students who have ranged from 4 - 70 years old. I hold a bachelors degree in piano performance from the University of Oregon and a masters degree in piano performance from the University of Miami. I am currently finishing an advanced certificate in piano performance and pedagogy at New York University.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?I started playing the piano at the ripe old age of three! I have been teaching piano for a decade.
