About
If you've got an original song or cover and you're trying to figure out how to interpret it, structure your ad lib, or make it really work for your voice, the doctor is in session. If you're working on a great song and are looking to make the lyrics or the melody sharper, more polished, or more poignant, the doctor is in session. If you want to make your song flow and your phrases roll off the tongue, the doctor is in session. Whether my clients are developing material for an album, getting ready to perform, or preparing for an audition, I'll provide them with assistance, guidance, and support within several realms. I coach singers to use their vocal skills, technique, and expression to take their performance to the next level. I also help songwriters refine the language, phrasing, melody, and harmony of their songs. I work with a wide range of styles, from musical theater and folk to modern pop and gospel, and I specialize in R&B, soul, and jazz. I am also fluent in Spanish and can coach Spanish language material as well. I offer private in-person consultations and remote sessions/Skype coaching. I also teach weekly four- to five-person group vocal coaching classes that offer singers the unique opportunity to hone their own individual style by working on the same songs as their colleagues. More information is on my website. Important question: What exactly is a vocal coach? The words voice teacher and vocal coach are often used interchangeably, but they are actually very different things. A voice teacher is concerned with teaching vocal technique and health. Proper breathing, jaw, tongue, and throat relaxation, efficient resonance, and all other technical aspects of singing are the domain of the voice teacher. A vocal coach on the other hand is concerned with optimizing the performance and interpretation of songs. Though a vocal coach often touches upon questions of technique (as a voice teacher may touch on questions of interpretation), the focus of a vocal coaching session is not technique but style and interpretation. Phrasing, improvisation, use of expressive tools, pronunciation, and all other interpretive aspects of singing and performing are the domain of the vocal coach. I am a vocal coach who inevitably will touch on vocal technique. I usually do it within the framework of improving my clients' abilities as performers. My videos will give you an idea of the sorts of things I do as a vocal coach. Contact me to talk about the specific ways I can help you build the confidence in your work and your abilities that you need to maximize your potential.

Greg coached me on several of my original songs, helping me tighten phrasing and ad-libs and challenging me to think more deeply about the overall movement and arc of my songs. We also worked on vocal technique, vowels, and placement. For anyone on the fence about working with Greg, DO IT! Sessions are relaxed, and whether you're an arranger, songwriter, or just want to get your voice in shape, he's a treasure trove of creative and technical wisdom, and is able to fuse classical training and a soulful sensibility. My sessions with him were absolute magic! I came out, not only feeling that we had made progress on my songs, but that I had rediscovered a part of my range that I had struggled with for a long time. Incredible coach!

Greg is an outstanding vocal coach. His approach combines a perfect blend of intellect, emotion, and technique. He helped me learn how to dig deep to convey the true intention behind my songs, while also offering incredibly practical feedback for how to sing more precisely, play with different colors in my voice, and more. Highly, highly recommend Greg to singers and songwriters at all levels -- you will learn a lot from this man!

I had a blast coaching En Vogue's "Don't Go" with Greg. It was refreshing to work with a singer and performer, as he was better able to help me parse both vocal technique questions and performance quandaries in a uniquely insightful and creative way.

Greg is a vocal coach of the absolute highest caliber. What I love most about working with him is that he helps me to find my own voice within, not just copy the styles and sounds of others. He personalizes each lesson to my needs and helps me to reach new heights with my voice! If you're looking to bridge the gap between mind, body and voice, The Song Doc is your best prescription.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

My primary goal is to help my clients to find their own voice and to open their minds to broader possibilities. It's not just about singing a song well or writing a good song, but singing it or writing it like YOU, bringing out that gem of uniqueness that will help you to transmit something more captivating than good technical prowess: honesty, clarity, and individuality. At the same time, I love to help my clients discover that they are capable of so much more than they expect and are full of fresh ideas that they've never before considered.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Find someone who tries to really "get" you. Some teachers and coaches try to copy and paste the same methods onto every single student. The fact of the matter is every artist has a unique body, a unique back story, and a unique relationship to his or her art. The greatest teachers are able to find what makes you tick as an individual and to tailor their techniques to your own particularities.
