Nick and his team of professionals were out of this world amazing from start to finish on the day of our Wedding. They were there on time and Nick had made me feel at ease from the moment I met him through Thumbtack. He is an amazing DJ, Entertainer, Businessman and overall wonderful person to be around! Nick made me feel so comfortable from the time we started communicating through Thumbtack that once I connected with him my decision was made to go with him and his team of professionals for my Wedding day for DJ services, Photography and Videography. Look no further ladies and gentleman!!! If you want the experience of a lifetime with someone who is going to be attentive to your needs and make you feel like the King and Queen of your day than hire Nick!!! He is professional yet warm, talented and experienced in the realm of DJ services as well as entertainment. He sang Frank Sinatra at my wedding and he was a head turner… Don’t let the most amazing experience of a lifetime be taken care of by anyone else. I truly cannot say enough to express my pleasure and amazement with Nick and his team and how they made my dream wedding come to life. Thank you Nick! You’re the best!

I've played with Jimi since the first time I picked up the instrument (bass for 11 years). Lessons with him enabled me to play in big bands and small ensembles at the college level, as well as have a steady stream of gigs when I was in school. His method of teaching is sadly growing rarer and rarer in private lesson study. Rather than mandate to the student rote musical examples which are a.) boring and b.) relate nothing about learning actual music, Jimi's approach is a holistic one that has faith in pupil's drive and intelligence. He demonstrates aspects of music theory fundamentals, and then has the student utilize the formulas he has imparted to extrapolate the rest, with his guidance of course. If the student has trouble, Jimi instructs to fill in the gaps but never spoon feeds. This method insures the student actually learns and internalizes the information, rather than becomes an automaton. Moreover, Jimi encourages the students to bring in pieces that they actually like to play! So instead of spending months hammering out a highly diluted version of a Bach morning song, the student can bring in pieces by Zep, the Strokes, the Black Keys, Rihanna, whatever! Jimi then instructs through elucidating the music theory fundamentals within the songs that drew the student to the instrument in the first place! Jimi is professional, yet laid back. I have continued my friendship with him after studying and going on to professional life. He's just a good dude to know. Lastly, and this should be the last thing you consider. Jimi's rates are always reasonable. For private study in college, I paid 3-4 times as much for a lesson as what I paid when taking a lesson with Jimi. I hope you Long Islander aspiring musicians realize what a gem you have there.

The quartet we hired from Consonance was absolutely amazing - even our photographer's husband commented that it was some of the best wedding music he's ever heard. I was so impressed by them. Vasily was prompt with correspondence and made everything so easy. The music was the highlight of our ceremony!

Spencer and Sequoia brought the soundtrack to our wedding. Seeing and hearing them play live for our reception was a treat for our guests and one the highlights of the night. Their music is beautiful, modern, unique and leaves everyone wanting to hear more. We didn’t have to worry about any of their setup, they came with everything they needed and added zero stress or complications to our wedding planning. They are professional to work with and trustworthy. We loved to have one of their original songs as our first dance! They made our special day even more unforgettable. All we have to say is a big thank you for putting life into the music at our wedding. Levi & Leslie Ballard

I looooove Soulful Sounds! They are my favorite band. They played at my wedding in August 2015. I'm so glad I gave them a chance. Besides picking my dress they were the best decision for my wedding. People still talk about how great the band was. My only regret was that I didn't have them play the whole night. The guys are so prefessional and they dress for the job. I highly recommend them to everyone I know. I can't wait for my next event to have Soulful Sounds play. Keep up the good work guys. I feel like they get better every time I hear them. Love Vicky

My wife and I are extremely happy that we hired Mariko as the solo violinist at our Central Park, NY wedding on 11/16/2014. She is a super talented musician and a very friendly person. All of our interactions with her has been wonderful. Since my wedding was outdoors in Central Park, on a cold and windy day, Mariko was initially concerned that the weather may damage her equipment. But she quickly found a solution for us by offering to rent a violin so she can still play at the wedding. She showed up early to the ceremony location (before we even got there). We asked her to play "Canon in D" along with any songs that she feels would suit the occasion. Needless to say, all the songs she chose were romantic and sounded perfect for our wedding. My wife and I received many compliments from our guest about Mariko. We would definitely recommend Mariko to play at any special events.

Mark Weisman has been my son's piano teacher since he was 11 years old. Alex is now a proficient pianist at age 21. Under the tutelage of Mark, my son advanced from a music student to a true musician. Mark is an engaging teacher who introduces his students to a variety of music genres, keeping classical, standards and popular music all part of the student's repertoire. My son Alex's interest in music was spurred on by Mark's enthusiasm and style of teaching. The Music Workshop conducts annual performances for parents and friends so we can see the progress our children have made. My son is now in college and still studies with Mark on breaks and in the summer. Alex belongs to The Jazz Band at Loyola University as well as his own band. He has played professionally for cocktail hours and theater productions. Mark has inspired Alex to continue his music into his adulthood. Mark Weisman is an exemplary teacher and person.

Thank you, Jonathan to you and your guys for playing such a good music with exceptional quality. All guests (young and older ones) gave me very good comments about the performance. We all enjoyed the selection of songs, the quality of play as well as the fact that all guests could sing and play together with the band. Also, appreciate your guys help with the little hiccup on the event schedule we had and adjusting yourself to our needs! Thank you again for the unforgettable night!

Chanan was a joy to work with! Knowledgeable and skilled and very creative. He helped produce a record of sacred music for me and also provided back up guitar for my band when needed a few times in Dallas. He is an exceptional engineer and guitar player with a fine ear for detail.

I came to Sarah with a goal of wanting to accompany myself as a singer, instead of having to rely on a guitarist or a band. In less than a year I played my first solo show. Sarah has prepared me to play solo, with a band, how to rearrange songs, how to read sheet music and so much more. Every lesson I learn something different. She’s made learning piano fun and interesting. Sarah is very patient, kind and extremely talented. I’d never go anywhere else!

I had the pleasure of having Violetta play at my wedding, just writing this review is bringing me to tears. To say she was AMAZING is truly the understatement of the century. She played everything from Ava Marie to the theme from the Bad News Bears. My dream was to have a harpist at my wedding, and Violetta truly made all my dreams come true!! Bravo!!

Helene was my piano teacher from kindergarten through high school. She taught me how to read, understand, play and love music. Furthermore, my early -and in-depth- start with piano prepared me for years of trumpet in various advanced bands. Although I am not currently taking lessons, I still sit down to play piano whenever I get the chance. I'll play anything from Bach to Beethoven to Josh Groban to new and classic Disney - really anything I'm in the mood for. Helene's teaching has made me proficient enough in piano and music in general such that I can truly enjoy playing. Thanks Helene!!

Alex is a great teacher who helped me become a better and more confident drummer. I've played guitar and bass in bands in the past, but I wanted to branch out and learn drums to form a new band so I sought out Alex for lessons. He has really helped me understand the concepts I need to progress as a drummer. Been getting my chops up and hope to get the band gigging soon.

Honestly can't say enough about how great these guys are. Peter Maness was super professional and easy to deal with and found the whole band to be extremely talented and very friendly :) most importantly for us though, they really played fun and energetic show that had all our guests up and dancing immediately. Everyone had a blast and are still telling me how much they enjoyed our band. Our wedding music was really important to us so I'm happy to say that these guys knocked it out of the park. Thanks a ton!! -Christi M, East Setauket, NY

We signed on Caeli to play, with a cellist, at our wedding's ceremony and cocktail hour. While Caeli had a conflict arise and wasn't herself able to join us, she took care of all logistics, including lining up a superb replacement and writing an arrangement of our recessional request (the Top Gun theme). She was wonderfully professional and responsive, loading YouTube videos of the songs she recommended (including Top Gun) so we could listen and decide on our song choices. I highly highly recommend Caeli!!

Mr. Rotante instructed my daughter Isabella in piano for four years. His work ethic is tremendous while providing educational guidance to prepare my daughter for high school band. His personal touch inspired my daughter to play on her own outside of her lessons. Passion and persistence are two of John’s attractive qualities.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
