FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For longer pieces (10,000 words plus) developmental editing (extensive comments on the manuscript, a 10-12 page critique for a full-length book) is generally $14 per 1,000 words. This may be adjusted up or down, depending on circumstances. Copy editing is $10 per 1,000 words; more for academic work (usually $8 per double-spaced page for two passes). Shorter work is a little more expensive and includes a fee of $20 plus the per-word fee for any job under 2500 words. Proofreading (which does not include rewriting awkward sentences, fact-checking, continuity checks—is basically the last stage of editing—is priced depending on the nature of the material.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Most of the work is done by email. I am happy to talk with a new customer, and check in by phone whenever necessary.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in English, won a competitive fellowship from The National Endowment for the Arts; have published two well-reviewed novels and a memoir, poetry, short stories and essays; write and edit for a NYC nonprofit, and read everything.
