Anna performed interior design and architectural planning for my Brooklyn residence. She was fantastic. She has an artist's eye and an architect's skill. Her rates were extremely reasonable. She was professional, courteous and timely with her work. Highly recommend.

I contacted Manny from Kenneth Irving Architect via Thumbtack. He was one of several architects who responded to my request. Of all of them, he was the only one to offer a free in person consultation to look at the scope of the work to be performed. He promptly got back to me with a quote within a day. He scheduled to return a few days later to perform the necessary measurements. The day before he came, I discovered that I now needed an additional room added to the project. I informed Manny, and he graciously drew up a new proposal with the new work included. He came by on schedule, and did all measurements. Within a week I had all drawings, documents, and applications needed for my renovation project. My experience with Manny was very pleasant, everything went smoothly and his work was done in a very timely manner. Glad I hired Manny for the job, and would highly recommend to others.

I have know Ed for about 15 years, observing his work over that period on various local projects, but not in need of an architect. This past year I decided to widen my driveway to accommodate the increase of cars to be parked on the property, but was finding many road blocks. Ed researched above and beyond to find a way to help me. Through his knowledge, perseverance and skills, he not only was successful in taking care of our needs, but took the task of working with the Building Department and DPW off my hands. Ed is easy to work with and extremely efficient. I would highly recommend him as an architect.

I had the great pleasure of working with Matthew Oscar when he was the chief architect on a Gothic Mansion we were renovating for my nephew in the high-end community of Saddle River, in Bergen County, NJ. I was extremely impressed with his innovative solutions to every difficult engineering problem we encountered. Not only is he a great architect but he also brings a unique artistic approach to his work. I can only sum up my opinion of his workmanship by saying that I believe his incredible talent is a combination of Frank Lloyd Wright and Salvatore Dali, a masterful architect and an exceptional artist. It was a pleasure to work with 43hundred architects. Mrs Nadine and Ms Magda are both, detail oriented, thoughtful, reliable and incredibly talented. Best costumer service! We hired them for a remodeling of our new house. They provided not only the professional design and concepts but also willingness to listen with patience and courtesy. I will definitely recommend them to family and friends!

Paul helped us rebuild my mother's house after hurricane Sandy. Out of all of the people we hired, Paul was the most attentive and responsive to our needs, from getting through the Building permit process to communicating with the contractors and surveyors, he always made things progress to the next phase quicker. His communication with us and his patient explanations often put us at ease when we were becoming fed up with the build. You'll be doing yourself a great service by hiring Paul Walter for your projects.

I needed an architect for some renovations on my brownstone. I didn't know step 1 of the process. Mr Wilder came highly recommended from a mutual friend. I did my research and gave him a call I explained all that I wanted and he explained all I needed to accomplish my goal. He was very professional, he was always on time and in constant communication with me which is what I liked most. He presented different contractors for the job since I didn't have my own. He helped me negotiate and stay within my budget. At the time I was expecting so I was under a deadline. Mr Wilder dealt with my indecisiveness and was very patient with me. I would say he goes above and beyond for his clients and being a "perfectionist" himself you are guaranteed to be beyond satisfied with his work. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone.!!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
