Milton Suqui of S & L Tree Service, and his colleague, Freddie, helped me remove a 60' tree, 18" diameter at the base, that had fallen into a tidal river adjacent to our property. The tree needed to come out immediately otherwise it would become a sieve catching winter blow down and other debris, and jeopardizing our little dock. Get all the estimates you want from Thumbtack.com, but do yourself a favor and give Milton the first chance to do an onsite "final" estimate. Not only did Milton give me the best price, but he and Freddie came with equipment, ready to go the day of the on-site survey, and immediately got to work. Remember, the tree was in the river, so there were some obstacles along the way, including submerged boulders which made the task more difficult, but our little team succeeded in accomplishing the goal. Using block and tackle, pulleys, ratchet straps, a pair of neoprene waders, and a couple of hearty chainsaws, the job was handled efficiently. All of the pieces of the stumps, and branches, and brush were piled neatly above the flood zone to create a new home for woodland creatures. If they can remove a large tree from a moving, tidal river, imagine what they can do for you on dry land. Highly recommend.

I recently had a tree come down in my yard. I called Dave and he made himself available to remove the tree as quickly and efficiently as possible. He is professional and talented. He was able to dice the tree, the branches, and brush and remove it off my yard with ease. It would have taken me a week to do what he did in a day and a half, and that's saying alot because I'm a builder and carpenter . I work around people like Dave everyday and he is without a doubt a top notch worker but even more important a top notch guy.

I originally wanted one hedge (5-ft) removed and another 12 ft hedge trimmed. Ozzy determined that he could cut the 5ft hedge level with the ground but would not be able to get the roots and stumps completely. I agreed to him cutting it level with the ground because the hedge was large enough to partially block my view when driving in or out of my driveway and I felt it was unsafe. We negotiated the price and he did not want a down payment. Actually, he said that I could pay when he's finished and I am satisfied with his work. He started on Tuesday and came back today (Thursday) to complete the work. He cleaned up all the waste and removed it. He also trimmed a tree in front of my house and sprayed some pesky weeds on my sidewalk and driveway. Ozzy is a pleasant fellow and I would definitely use his services again.

Rocky and his crew have been managing my lawn care needs since January, 2016. Summer work included installation of new landscaping, complete lawn care (mowing, weeding, fertilizing, aerating, spring and fall clean-up), tree removal, installation of new sidewalk and front porch, renovating large deck. All work was explained clearly and thoroughly, performed in a timely fashion, and expertly executed. Snow removal from driveway and sidewalks is another task completed in a timely manner without property damage. The crew is professional, friendly and helpful and clean up thoroughly upon completion of all work.

Carlos did a GREAT job taking down an old tree on our property. After carefully cutting down the tree Carlos mulched up the limbs so we could use them on the property and even organized the wood left (destined for the fireplace) – Great Job and Great Value

Christian Tree Service handled a large tree removal project for me. They removed 7-8 trees on my property including a giant oak tree towering dangerously over the house. They were courteous, professional, efficient and very reasonably priced. I could not be happier with the service received and would highly recommend Christian and his team for any future tree or landscaping needs.

Moises and his guys removed a dead birch tree, a dead spruce and trimmed a large spruce. The team obviously work together all the time; they were very organized and thorough. They offered to replant a few dislodged plants that were close to the birch tree. My neighbor actually asked Moises for some work that he was able to complete the same day. They spoke English and were friendly while being professional. They cleaned up "everything" before leaving. I would definitely recommend them.

Pedro was prompt and attentive. He’s the first lawn professional I hired for my new home and certainly one of the hardest workers I’ve had to the property. I anticipated a small team, but Pedro assured me he could single-handed meet all of my needs. He worked consciously and meticulously for hours until he’d completed every request I made, including some last minute tree trimming and decorative edging. His pricing was reasonable and his demeanor was respectful and professional. I’ll definitely be hiring him again and I encourage you to do the same!

They might not do it like you like the first time around, but they are responsive to your suggestions and comment and they would try to do it the way you wanted. They don’t bring their official receipt with them when they come out your home to do the work and getting paid. I had the boss Jose to write me a receipt by hand because he didn’t have an official receipt with him. They even cleaned off the roof for me because some debris from tree trimming flow on there and I told them to clean off the debris and they did. I don’t have any grievance nor complain about their good performance. Remember to give them a lot of suggestions.

Punctual, and very professional. Came with his crew and they cut three trees completely down, and some additional branches. The guys worked hard, with no disturbance, and cleaned up amazingly, you couldn't even tell anyone was at the property a few minutes ago cutting 80 foot trees! Pricing was also extremely fair. Highly recommend, and definitely will hire for additional gardening, landscaping and tree cutting services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
