About
This is Michael Baskin. I am Number Sense Tutoring. I teach kids strategies to think mathematically instead of just rote memorization. Number sense is an intuitive, flexible understanding of numbers, quantities, and how they relate to one another.
Key Components Subitizing: Instantly seeing and recognizing a small quantity of items without counting them one by one.
Cardinality: Knowing that the last number counted in a group represents the total amount.
Magnitude: Understanding the relative size of numbers, such as knowing which value is larger or smaller.
Composition and Decomposition: Splitting numbers apart and putting them back together, like knowing 5 can be broken into 2 and 3.
Why It Matters Foundation for Math: It helps people do mental math, spot patterns, and solve complex problems without relying strictly on memorization. I would love to help you and your child. Our first session is always FREE! If you'd like to move forward please ********* so I can learn more about your child's struggles.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My hourly rate for one on one tutoring is $37/hour. This is what my district pays me for my time over and above my normal teaching duties. I believe you will find this to be extremely competitive and reasonable for a current New York State certified math teacher with 18 years of experience.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When beginning to work with a new student, I need to hear from them about what they feel they are having difficulty understanding. What misconceptions do they have? Since each student is different, I may administer the WRAT-4, (wide ranging achievement test) to learn what grade level the student is currently working at mathematically. The results of the WRAT-4 provide me with a reliable indication as to some specific concepts and ideas with which the student may need assistance.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
For the past 18 years I have been a mathematics teacher for the Rochester City School District. I am a certified 7-12 math teacher. I have seen first hand how students who lack number sense, struggle to learn higher level math like algebra, geometry, etc. Math is NOT about being fast and memorizing facts. Math IS about being flexible, creative and intuitive. There is no such thing as a math brain. EVERYONE can learn math to the highest levels.
