Introduction
Hi! I'm Ms. Jenna, a certified elementary school literacy specialist and former first grade teacher located in New York. I am excited by every opportunity to help a child become an independent and life-long learner! I have created all of my reading and writing resources to be accessible virtually and can meet with your child wherever you are, providing consistency and reliability. I specialize in teaching children how to become confident readers, writers, spellers, and thinkers. Starting from as young as 4 years old, I can help your child develop the foundation they need to become a skilled reader. My approach is grounded in research-based methods that are explicit and systematic in order to help improve your child’s decoding, encoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. Contact me to book a no obligation reading screener and consultation to get a better idea of what your child’s reading level is and how I can best support them! About Ms. Jenna I was a first grade teacher in a New York City public school in Chelsea for six years before becoming a reading specialist (grades K-4) in a top rated school district in Westchester, NY. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Childhood and Special Education (grades 1-6) from SUNY Geneseo and a Master’s degree in Literacy (birth-6th grade) from Teachers College at Columbia University. I am trained in Orton-Gillingham, which is a specialized, explicit and multisensory approach to teaching reading through phonics based instruction, and have completed a two year certification program to become a CALT (a certified academic language therapist who specializes in providing dyslexia therapy). Throughout my career, I have had experience teaching children of varying abilities across all elementary grade levels. Private Tutoring Services I specialize in teaching reading, writing, and phonics to children, pre-kindergarten to 6th grade, using explicit and research-based approaches. I tailor my instruction to meet each individual child’s needs, but most importantly, I strive to make learning fun and engaging for young children! I provide all of my clients with a free 30-minute initial consultation to discuss your child’s current levels, learning needs, and learning style in order to ensure I am a good fit for your family. We will work together to establish goals and develop a personalized and targeted plan to strengthen your child’s literacy skills.

Jenna is a talented reading specialist. From the first meeting she developed a strong rapport with my child and he looked forward to their sessions. His reading and writing were enriched dramatically with Jenna’s tutelage.

I’m so glad we signed up for reading tutoring with Jenna. My six year old son learned so much in such a short amount of time and gained a ton of confidence in reading and writing. Jenna provides amazing tools for students as well as for parents to be able to support their child’s reading. Jenna is a literacy specialist, not just a tutor, and it shows! She took a very thoughtful and tailored approach in teaching my son and he was reading within a few short months. Couldn’t recommend her more!

Details: Elementary school • General reading and writing • Native speaker • Learn new topics and techniques • Once a week • 30 minutes • Remotely (phone or internet)

My daughter looks forward to her weekly sessions and has gained confidence in her reading and writing as Jenna has helped her meet grade level expectations!

We are so incredibly grateful we found Jenna. My daughter was having a hard time reading and was very behind. Jenna was so organized with her lessons and approach. The progress my daughter made was so amazing her teachers were reaching out to me asking what we were doing. My daughter loves Jenna and loves their time learning together. We tried other tutors and none were able to make the progress like Jenna. We will forever be grateful for her help!

We were first introduced to Ms. Collisson as our son's 1st grade teacher at a public school in District 2 in Manhattan. From our initial meeting during Parents Night, we were instantly impressed. Our son would run out the door to get to school in the morning and Ms. Collisson was a huge part of his eagerness to start the day! She has a calm and nurturing way about her yet pushes the kids to become their individual bests. As Covid struck mid-year, we had the gift of watching Ms. Collisson in action, corralling 24 1st graders on a remote screen daily, and never missing a beat. She brought engaging and interactive lessons to life with her smile and really made learning fun. She has since tutored both of our kids remotely and has fostered a true love of learning in both. We feel extremely lucky to have landed in Ms. Collisson's class, she is a true gem!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Prices range from $80-$175/session depending on frequency, duration, and the time of day. Contact me for pricing - I provide discounts on my hourly rate when you book three or more sessions per week and if you book during school day hours. I also provide a lower hourly rate per child for group sessions.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I first like to set up a free initial consultation meeting with the family to discuss goals together and ensure that I'd be a good match for the child and family. Then I start with some initial assessments in order to plan next steps towards growth and success.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Childhood and Special Education (grades 1-6) from SUNY Geneseo and a Master’s degree in Literacy (birth-6th grade) from Teachers College at Columbia. I am also trained in Orton-Gillingham. I have 9 years of experience teaching in public schools.
