Ronnie K. says, "I’ve gone through several contractors for a variety of jobs over the years and Tay is a cut above the rest ! Tay and Terry make a great team, they are punctual, professional, have great work quality and above all are trustworthy. They aren’t in this business to scam but to provide honest, affordable and quality service to their customers. A great example : I purchased a new home and closed right before the Nor’easter. Didn’t have a snow ploughing guy and while Tay and Terry were already on their way to do the renovation work; at the last minute they let me know they have a snow plough and can take care of it. Given my situation Tay could’ve easily charged me way more than market rate but he didn’t ; and was extremely ethical. Rare quality ! I will be using Tay for all my home renovation needs going forward. Highly recommend them!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

He put my mind at ease as I’m in Florida and my parents live in Ny and needed an electrician and he showed up fast and fixed all the issues and I’m grateful for his expertise and my parents appreciated it too. I would highly recommend.

Timothy Huff Sr. of Custom Power is a Master Electrician, his walk-through, and estimate reflected this. A few months go by, and Timothy can start the work. All I can say is wow! The work was performed beyond my expectations. I now have grounded outlets where a ground did not exist. The rusted electrical panel was replaced, and the AMPS were increased from 100, to 150. I can use a portable air conditioner if I wish. This is the type of work you expect from a Master Electrician, and Timothy's work demonstrated so. Timothy brought an apprentice, or journeyman to assist, cutting down the time to complete this job. Again, very friendly, and capable.

I would highly recommend Lighthouse LLC! Bob and Destiny installed under cabinet lighting, as well as recess lighting above our front entrance and did an incredible job at a very reasonable price. Bob’s communication was excellent, returning texts and phone calls immediately. He was on time for both the estimate inspection as well as the job itself. We’ll definitely recommend him to all of our friends and family looking for an electrician!

I asked him to fix the outlets on July 9, and he came at 1 pm. He said I'll come tomorrow to fix that but I must take $50, and he came day after, but he did not fix anything because he said that ill come next week because it's a big project. I called him a week after but he didn't answer. If anyone needs an electrician don't call this person because he will take $50 and will escape.

I had begun a project in my home to replace the bathroom exhaust fan when I ran into some trouble with the wiring. I could not figure out how my bathroom had been wired many years ago to work with the old lights and fan and how to make it work with the new lights and fan. I put in a request for help on Thumbtack and Bob responded immediately. He came to my house the next day with a great apprentice and began investigating the wiring and determining a solution. This involved getting into a tight crawl space above the bathroom, installing an additional switch box and switch, and figuring out the old wiring scheme. He returned the following day with a solution and had my new fan wired up and working in no time. Bob and his apprentice are true professionals and I highly recommend them to anyone needing an electrician. I will definitely call Bob first in the future if I need electrical work.
