How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How long does it take to install a window?

It can take less than an hour to install a new window in a house, and you might be able to install all your windows in less than a day. However, this is assuming ideal conditions and that the previous window is already removed. Factors that may add to this timeframe include larger or more complex windows like bay windows or sidelights, as well as windows being installed in hard-to-reach places.

Do window installers work in the rain?

It is possible to install windows while it’s raining, and some professionals may perform the job in the rain. But keep in mind that if the rain is falling especially hard, it could cause moisture to enter the house. And, it’s not safe to work in strong winds or thunderstorms. Some technicians may also not install multi-story windows when it’s wet. Applying caulk can also become less effective if things are very wet.

How do I prepare my house for replacement windows?

To prepare your house for the installation of new replacement windows, start by clearing a path and the area around the window. Take down any window treatments like blinds or curtains, and cover your furniture to protect it from dust. And make sure the window replacement crew will have access to your house.

Before the window installation service arrives at your home, ask them if there are other preparation steps you should take.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

I had a great experience with Raetrent remodeling. They installed 12 windows in my home. They showed up early on the day with an entire crew of people, all of them were extremely professional and knowledgeable. They did a great job on the install, were very thorough, and really did everything perfectly. They finished everything in one day even though I know it took longer then expected. Overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others!

The project went great. We did the home and garden show and had actually agreed to purchase windows from one of the larger companies in Northeast Ohio after sitting through numerous pitches at our kitchen table. Each of the company’s presented basically the same window with the same technology but at various different prices. Many of them often used gimmicks where the more you talked the more that the discounts somehow appeared. The process would take hours when at the end of the day all we needed was the quality window, a quality install and a good price. After agreeing the night before with this other company, we had three days to back out with no questions asked. I always research every possible option and had seen something about First Glass and sent him a message that next morning. Within 3 hours Tim was in our house. What struck us right away was that Tim was very straight forward. He gave us a ballpark estimate before he came over and then stuck to it when he got here. There were no gimmicks he asked us questions about what we had come to him wanting and he shared his opinions. He warranties his work and uses the same windows as the other big box suppliers. He did all his measurements and then told us to take our time with our decision. He was in and out within 30-40 min compared to roughly 2-3 hours with the other suppliers. The rest of the day my wife and I talked it over. Every time we had a question Tim was very responsive in answering them and providing us with as much information as he could. We ended up coming to the agreement to go with Tim because we felt more comfortable with him as a person, he was able to give us everything we wanted, and he was affordable. Upon calling him to tell him that we were going to go with him, he had known that we had signed with another company and basically told us to make sure that this is what we wanted and that we could have as much time as we needed. He just wanted to make sure that we were comfortable with our decision. That only made us feel more comfortable with our decision. A few weeks later Tim and 2 others of his crew got to our house at 8 am and had installed 10 windows by 1. Throughout the install they were very open to questions that I had about the install process and were very friendly and willing to help. I even had a window and door that they weren’t replacing that I asked their opinion on and they happily gave it. The windows installed make the house look completely different. We could not be happier with our decision. Overall this was a very good process and we would suggest anyone who is seriously considering windows to save themselves the trouble and simply call Tim at First Glass. Thanks again!!

I purchased a new sliding door for my patio and windows for my entire townhouse. Chuck came to my house and thoroughly explained everything about window replacement, what to expect, performed demonstrations of the window capabilities, and provided data on pricing and material quality that I could expect from other companies. Chuck even explained how other companies can provide such low prices, but it's obvious that he is very confident in the products he sells and the team that works for him because price does not always sell - quality does. I can honestly say that the new patio door and windows have changed the look of my house (in a good way), significantly reduced the noise I hear coming from the street traffic, and has drastically helped to improve with maintaining a stable inside temperature (unlike my seriously despicable old windows and door). Lou came out and took measurements before placing the order and that process was very quick and easy. Lou was very informative and professional. His knowledge left me feeling even more confident that Rae Trent Remodeling was the perfect choice for my project. Chuck and Lou kept me up-to-date on the windows and when the install would begin and called a few times the days before to answer any questions and confirm that they were all set to start and that my schedule was still open. Jacob was the installer. He was wonderful and extremely professional. He worked very quickly, yet paid attention to the small details. He finished the job in two days - removing nine windows and a sliding patio door that were at least 40 years old was rough...more like an act of god, but it was done and the new were installed, caulked, insulated, and all the trim was put up on the outside along with any trim taken down on the inside and all the blinds were re-hung. I could not be more satisfied with Rae Trent Remodeling and the work that they completed for me. The price for the total job was below what I had expected. I will use this company in the future when I need additional remodeling work done to my house and I highly recommend Rae Trent Remodeling to anyone who is looking for excellent professional service, outstanding quality work, and very reasonable pricing.

When Tim said he said he would be here - he was. When Tim said he could install a 450lb window - he did!.. He had about seven guys here to do the carrying and lifting. He and Greg stayed around to do the finish work and the outside looks exactly how we wanted it. I would recommend First Glass anytime and to anyone. Thanks Tim, Greg and the rest of the crew,
