I was lucky to find Mike because he was able to figure out all the aspects of the repairs needed for my house. This included step and vinyl siding replacement. These were also hood quality workers. Mike replaced my front door panels and storm door. He is meticulous in his work, making sure everything matched perfectly. Mike asked me and showed me anything that was questionable before he made any changes from the initial plan. I highly recommend Mike. You will be satisfied with his work.

I've experienced a lot of inconsistency when hiring several skilled trades workers in the last. Jim has been the exact opposite in my first couple communications with him. He was very responsive in the days leading up doing a couple jobs for us today. He showed up when he said he would, he presented options, he explained what he was going to do, then he did it. I look forward to working with Jim on future projects.

Dell T5500 was frozen, would not start on 9/3/16. Explained problem on Google that sent my question to Thumbtack on Labor Day. Got 6 quotes about fixing problem. Cellputer offered free check up. Picked up Labor Day and diagnosed as bad motherboard. Told him fix. Cellputer ordered new motherboard with warranty. Delivered working computer. Running great.

I found Michael to be amiable and flexible to work with. He was easy and responsive to communicate with both in person and through electronic media. His fee for labor and materials was reasonable. Except for a couple finishing details, I am satisfied with the overall appearance of my porch and the work he did. I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation.

The job was just completed this morning so iI can't comment on long term aspects. As it relates to what I experienced so far, very impressed. Richard answered the call each time I reached out. He called me at the exact time promised. Arrived at the time we agreed upon. Material needed from Home Depot (sump pump) were not up charged at all. Labor and service call charge were reasonable for 2 workers and about 1.5 hours of work. Equipment purchased (again with no inflated charge), equipment installed and new outlet installed. Satisifed so far, and have no reason to expect that would change. Thanks Rich and Frank!

I recently had a new driveway, sidewalk and 10' x 20' pad behind my garage installed by Safe Guard Renovations. Dave Rogers, the owner of the company is a young ambitious professional. I was skeptical at first because he had only been in business for five years but there is no doubt that he had been exposed to this trade for many years prior. Dave employ's true tradesman, his main concern was to make me happy as the customer. The tear out, install and finish was done in three days. I couldn't be happier. I had some concerns and questions after the job was done and paid for, so I texted Dave and within five minutes he called me back. All is good. I would like to make mention of some of his guys as I said he has some extremely skilled tradesmen working for him. Mike, who was the senior of them all would spend time with me while I was micromanaging the project (getting in their way) and reassure me that the guys that were on the job know exactly what they're doing. Shane, is there master plumber who will repair, relocate and tie in all your drains and who also has an extensive back ground in the cement trades. Som, this man is a bull and will take charge of the cement pour and finishing, complete professional. There are many others but just can’t remember their names. Bottom line, I would recommend Safe Guard Renovations for your cement needs.

Hired to unclog a kitchen sink drain. Turned out to be a much more complicated job than anyone anticipated. Danell never gave up. He persevered through 4 1/2 hours of problem solving until the situation was completely and properly resolved - and all the while with a pleasant attitude! Professional and attentive to detail. Clean throughout the entire process. An absolute pleasure to have working in our home. More than fair pricing for his labor and expertise. We will hire him for our plumbing needs in the future!!

Excellent attention to detail. fair price for the work that was completed. I got a few quotes- some were even less expensive. But when I started doing my homework, comparing product thickness, warranty and the labor guarantee I was sold. Really glad I chose RightMan renovations for my siding project. I feel like I got my money's worth and then some. Yes I would recommend them

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with Steve's work. He not only gave a reasonable estimate (much lower than we expected) but he did a quality job! Steve provided a list of the materials required to do the job if we wanted to buy them and just pay for labor or he would provide materials - so no hidden costs. I really would encourage others to use his services. We would definitely use him again. Thanks so much, Steve!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
