We hired Larry to fix a masonry job on our fireplace which we weren't happy with. Not only did Larry come out on a Sunday to begin the work, he finished the project one day early. He was meticulous in his work, using great care to make sure the job was done well and we were satisfied with it. He even followed up the next day to make sure we were still happy with it. The fireplace now looks beautiful and we have Larry to thank. We would absolutely contact Larry again for future work and would not hesitate to recommend him to family and friends.

Honest, organized, affordable, professional, and friendly. Need a simple concrete repair or paint work, and don’t want to deal with aggressive sales pitches and overpriced work? Kenneth if THE guy. He made our 50 year old driveway look brand new, and even did extra work, above and beyond what we asked. Definition of a hardworking small business honor. Hope to do business with him again.

I had a drywall install and repair job that was on a tight timeline. Danny responded quickly and worked diligently to meet my needs. His work ethic was great and he takes pride in a job well done. He is also personable and has a good sense of humor. His assistant was just as courteous and efficient as he was. Danny also connected me to a great painter who worked to meet my tight deadline. I will definitely hire Danny for the next job I need done.

I requested Drywall estimate for a ceiling removal in the kitchen (old drop ceiling with the plastic sheets for Florescent lighting ) . Kelsha responded quickly and personnaly showed up to introduce himself. I quickly realized Kelsha was more than just drywall contractor. His work and helper were there when they said and performed perfect in removal of many parts of the home I was remodeling. We did total bathroom remodel as well as walls removed throughout the home. They cleaned up everyday they were on the job and never had to question anything. Kelsha was so talented in Finished Trim, Drywall, and general construction all the stress of the multiple projects in the home Kelsha performed always in a professional way. Always was the early man on the job and kept in touch thruout with other trades to cordinate the work load . Kelsha would constantly call to inform me of progress and what I needed to purchase to keep the flow moving forward. I forgot to mention his ability in framing walls whenever needed which I found myself needing during the remodel. We added and removed multiple walls and Kelsha finish work made them all look as if they never happened. I strongly recommend Kelsha Speedlimit Construction for all your drywall , framing and finish Carpentry jobs. Small or large you will be happy with Kelsha on the job.

I am a single female on a tight budget who knows very little about home repairs/remodeling. I am wary of being "taken" due to this, and thus have put off my kitchen "redo" for several years. Paul and his assistant, his granddaughter, have been outstanding. They have been punctual, communicative, offered suggestions, and come in under budget. They have also been quite patient when I have added a couple of things or changed course mid-way (glad they aren't reviewing me as a customer :). To top if off, they are positive and enjoyable to be around. My refaced cabinets look great and my backsplash and new range hood go in next week. I can't wait to see the final results!

Alan has truly come through and helped me out while in a bind. I am an out of state landlord and needed some major drywall repair on a unit. Alan gave me the best price and started the job within a couple days. His work ethic, quality, and professionalism are outstanding. It's hard to find an honest contractor but I swear I just hit the jackpot. Alan is an all around good dude and already feels like a friend. I consider myself lucky that he is working on this project for me. Thanks Alan!!!

We have used Greg for various jobs on our rental home. I can ask him to do the little things, as well as larger projects. He has repaired gutters, repaired a fence latch, replaced kitchen flooring, fixed our heater, weather sealed some doors, put in new screen/storm doors, fixed a ceiling fan, installed a new mailbox, and various other upkeep jobs. He charges very reasonable rates, and is helpful at coming up with a cost-effective solution if that is what you desire. He is easy to reach via text message and email which is helpful and eliminates "phone tag" issues. Because of the variable nature of the jobs he does, sometimes he is not able to do the work on the originally scheduled day because a previous job may run long. Usually, this isn't a problem, and if the job is urgent, he always comes through.

I needed Moe's help in installing Ikea patio tiles in a parquet pattern, and to fit around an angled wall in my patio. He measured each and every tile before cutting and worked quickly and efficiently--no wasted tiles. And he worked as neatly as possible and cleaned up after himself. Moe also did a few related projects like helping me lay down an outdoor rug and positioning a heavy garden bench. And he gave me advice on a couple of other purchases I wanted to make to put the final touches on my patio project, and I will definitely be using him again to get those done. In addition to his superior skills, Moe is personable, friendly, courteous and conscientious. I highly recommend him for jobs big and small.

We used Columbus Constructors to install our laminate floors. It was a much bigger job than we had originally thought because during the demo Drew (the owner) discovered we had 3 areas where our roof was leaking and the water was pooling under the carpet along the walls. He handled that issue with ease and then installed the floors as planned. The floor is beautiful and the craftsmanship was top notch! I will be calling Drew again soon!

Gunnar and Brandon did a phenomenal job replacing our ceramic tile backsplash with oak wainscoting! They were punctual, had all the necessary materials with them, got to work right away, and had the project done in 4.5 hours, including clean-up. I could not be happier with the results! And, on top of that, their price was extremely reasonable. I plan to hire them for future work and give them my highest recommendation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
