Introduction: It was in a hospital room as a child where Samantha began to create art. At nine months old, Samantha survived bacterial meningitis. The physical impact of the disease is apparent as her skin is scarred; she had fingers, toes and half of her right foot amputated. She spent much of her youth enduring reconstructive surgeries. As Samantha continued having surgeries, she also continued studying art. Although she has missing fingers she continued to pursue an art career by studying Fine Arts at the Columbus Collage of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. Today, Samantha is a successful working artist also known as “Painter Sam”. Her artwork has received national media attention. Samantha’s story and art were featured on TLC's Angels Among Us, NYInk, she has interviewed on NBC, ABC and Fox and she’s also appeared in many printed publications. In 2011, Samantha was awarded “Mom of the Year” for her series Butterfly Portraits, art that is dedicated families that have lost a child. She began painting the series after losing their newborn son. Sam was the 2015 National Meningitis Association outstanding service honoree. Sam offers private drawing and painting lessons to children from her home studio in Gahanna.
