We hired SmitRoc Home Improvement to sand our deck and stain it. As Steve worked on the deck we discovered that there was 3 layers of stain to remove that proved extremely challenging to sand off. Steve and team did a great job sanding the deck even though it took them a lot longer than anticipated. They also were able to identify a few issues with stability on the deck that they fixed as well. We really appreciated their persistence. Steve also gave us a great price for all of the work he did on the deck. We would highly recommend SmitRoc Home Improvement and we plan to use them again in the future.

Our deck was in terrible shape--it needed major stripping. Howard did research on best methods to remove existing stain via power washing and sanding. He worked during open weather Windows and got job done under budget. Extremely nice and personable.

Roni, our painter, did a great job for us! He pays a lot of attention to detail and is very thorough. He also takes his time and does not rush through the work. He fixed problems left from a previous bad paint job and did not charge us for the extra work. For instance, he removed all the paint slopped on the woodwork by the previous painters. He also caulked between all of the cracks and around the doors before painting. We would highly recommend him to anyone who wants quality workmanship.

The project went very well. They removed wallpaper and painted a bathroom. They also painted my daughters bedroom and the walls of the stairway and laundry area to the basement. They were very professional, friendly and worked very clean. The work/service they provided was worth every cent. I will definitely call on them again for future projects. And I would recommend them to friends and family in a heartbeat.

We contracted A+ Improvements to paint a wood garage and garage door. The paint was flaking and peeling. Brian took the time to physically look at our project and discuss what we wanted done before giving us a quote. He confirmed the day prior to start and completed the project in the timeline quoted. He took great care to keep worksite clean and protect all surfaces. Not only did A+ remove the flaking paint prior to repainting, they also took time to sand several areas to make the garage look almost new. And he never charged us anything for the extra work!!!! We will definitely hire A+ Improvements for our next painting project. We have already recommended him to several family members and friends, and will continue to do so. If you want to work with a contractor that is professional, prompt, reliable, detail oriented and honest, then I would hire A+ Improvements.

I hired Matthew to power-wash our composite deck and a brick-paver sidewalk. He arrived on time and did an excellent job in removing the dark spots and staining on both surfaces. He finished the work in reasonable time and also removed stains from a limestone walkway at no additional charge. His work was good and we were very happy with the results. I also felt his price was quite reasonable.

Wendy has done several jobs for me over the years, She originally put up wallpaper for me then several years later she came back stripped the paper down and faux finished the same walls. She is currently helping me pick colors for my next project! She's a pleasure to work with and I will continue to use her for all my decorating needs.

We hired Al to wallpaper a wall in our dining room with a metallic pattern. He did an excellent job. Al was prompt in replying, showed up when he said he would, and completed the job in the timely manner. I showed the work to a coworker and she immediately asked for his contact information for a job at her home.

Brian gave me the lowest bid & was the only contractor who could do the job right away. I was sure it would take a couple of days but he & his "worker" got the wallpaper stripped, the walls primed & then finished with 2 coats of paint. They started at 9:00 & were done by 5:30. They did a terrific job & I love my new room. Brian is polite, friendly & easy to work with. Highly recommend!

We have used McCauley Painting for both interior and exterior painting and for power washing as well as wall paper removal and could not be more satisfied with the outcome. The quality of the work was great and Adam was there when he said he would be there. He finished on time and his own sense of pride in his work really showed. We trust him explicitly and he has been able to complete the work when we are not there. In addition, he cleans up and his perfectionism shows up in his work and his attention to detail. We recommend McCauley painting with no reservation.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

    • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
    • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
    • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
    • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
    • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
    • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
    • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
    • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
